Really, I don't understand. Maybe it's because I lived here my whole life, and worked in Manhattan for 10+ years.
I just feel so unhappy to be back in New York. I think Tokyo is a far superior city. I found it to be far more technically advanced, sooo much cleaner, safer, and friendlier. The trains and subways were clean, there was no stenches of urine or a soiled homeless person messing on the train. There was no one begging aggressively for money.

I also found Kyoto was far far nicer than NYC.

I dunno, two weeks away, and I am just so disappointed at being back to reality.

Maybe I will attempt an AA degree in Japanese (while working on a Computer Science PHD), and transfer career-wise to the University of Kyoto. Computer Science Professor at the University of Kyoto. I like the ring to that.

I think I'm the only person I know who doesn't really want to go to NYC, or anywhere in America really. Not really Japan either.

New York just doesn't seem to be 'all that' people make it out to be.

I'd rather just visit a city in Europe, they're closer for one thing and less expensive to get to.

And they are all very pretty with lots of old buildings, whereas New York seems more modern looking, which I'm not really interested in. Madrid is gorgeous, very clean, so's Paris and Manchester.

Also I really don't get the whole 'tipping culture' in America, as your not expected to do it here and that could leads to loads of awkward situations if I forget or don't tip enough.

It's the hype from other people of course, or because it's a new place to explore since it's different from where that individual is from. I've read comments from individuals who visited there recommend it because of either Time Square, the Broadway plays, fashion or something relating to the scenery.

Not as many people are "hung up on New York" as you may think.

Yeah my only gripe with Tokyo is that it is very crowded, not sure about Kyoto though since I have never been there. As for New York god that place is really horrendous at times. The only places I remembered that was great was Time Square, Areas near Wall Street and spots near where the WTC used to be.

Edit: My opinion of course, I was there as a tourist.

Good, because I think people are nuts to think this is the greatest place on earth. Although, everyone here thinking I am nuts, because I think this city is a dirty, unfriendly, stinky, rat-bedbug-roach infested, shithole.

Same here but then again Tokyo been getting hit hard by Earthquakes, just Japan in general. I rather live in the country side where there is nature and be with humble people. Somewhere where there is culture and life, like Morocco or Dominican Republic.

I'd probably make it one of the stops if I ever went on vacation in America, but beyond that it's fairly low on my list of places I wanna go..

"Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God-given right."

I moved from Brooklyn 17 years ago, told my husband yesterday I'm leaving his ass, and I'm fuckin booking it back to Brooklyn just about as fast as my legs will carry me. Something about going back to my roots.

Yeah it's a piss-stinking, foreigner-filled, disgusting dirty shithole... but its the city that never sleeps, and you can blend in with the sheer and utter anonymity of the grey.

You've just been on SI too long, the odor has affected your judgement. Ahhh *breathes deep*
