Who actually reads the forums they reply to?

Depends on how interested I am into the topic. If it's interesting or funny enough (especially funny) I will read thru each page. Sometimes a funny comment is worth scrolling thru hundreds of posts.

I also read every post on the really stupid threads. Stupidity that has no way of affecting me, is always hilarious.

I do, but I'm aware that most people don't, unless you quote them directly, and they decide to care about the notification they've been quoted. So I suspect very few people will even see this post...

I don't. Most of the posts aren't worth reading anyway.

I do, I also try to read all the comments on the pages I'm posting on or before. I think people really appreciate that their thoughts are being heard and not just ignored.

Depending on the topic being discussed, I might decide to lurk or at least browse before replying, but not always.

It's a bit of a tentative matter, really.

Did you know that 'the' entire year's worth of twitter responses ever made during 2010 is cataloged and preserved forever in the national archives? Talk about worthless posts that any of us couldn't care less about... But even so, why? Psychologist and other social analysis would still study twitter post to this day to get a feel for the society as a whole. If that's not interesting now, it gets even more so decades down the line. Imagine if you have this wealth of information from the 80s, 50s, or all the way back to the middle ages... If information technology was available to them back then... what would they say? Even I would be interested in what they said, trolls and geniuses alike. The very moment you read this post, you as the reader is not likely interested in reading previous post in other topics on this site because... well you just don't. But I bet your great great great great great great great grand children would, especially if they study archaeological sociology or something of that nature

It depends. I'll read them if shenanigans are happening or it's a really interesting topic. Otherwise I won't read them.

I wonder why people call topics.. "Forums"

I always thought a forum was a general place you go to post then you actually post TOPICS or THREADS.
