”CHOCOBOS!!!!” No, Azuki; the chickens in this world are probably not like the giant chickens from final fantasy that are friendly and can rode on like a horse, but that doesn’t stop her from blindly clinging onto hope. “I want to see the giant chickens and the flying cows!!! We don’t have those where we’re from!!!”

”Depends on where you’re going! The immediate area is cleared out since most newcomers train here to hone their powers because it’s convenient, obviously. There are some creatures living underground close to this area if you want to dig, and some a bit further away living in small, camouflaged packs under rubble. There is a city around here that’s a little bit away, but there are so stronger monsters there inhabiting the demolished building and stuff.”

”Do you think we’ll find kurses there?” Azuki wondered.

”Who knows.” Tsutomu shrugged. “Well, I’ll benefit from dumpster diving there. Either way, it’s up to you guys where we all want to go, ultimately. Want to start out with some oversized bugs, or skip to something more exciting?”

"That's a good place to start." Mai nodded her head in approval to Tsutomu's suggestion. What's something more exciting though...? She twirled her long pig tails, piqued at the thought, but also looking forward to the stronger monsters that Tsutomu mentioned. Would everyone be able to handle the stronger monsters though? Nura and Azuki looked strong enough, and Tsutomu was definitely more than okay.

She looked at the clueless Ruku who was slightly moving away each time Lily moved closer to him. Her eyes turned to Ethan as well. Would those two be okay? She didn't know what either of their powers were (she wasn't there when Ethan revealed his powers) or if Ruku even had any abilities.

Lily killed a guy in cold-blood, but other than that she looked pretty weak and pretty useless. Maybe fighting the monsters would bring out both Ruku and Lily's abilities? Although... she didn't really look forward to the crazy girl having any powers. She was already threatening enough.

"Alright, lead the way, Tsutomu, I think we should try digging a bit for those underground creatures. I think we're pretty much in agreement to go monster-hunting."

"Yeah, let's go!" Ruku threw his fist in the air and shook Mai repeatedly, ready to gain some experience and level up––

Azuki pouted. She thought going straight for the mysterious monsters in the city would be fun and exciting, but taking the proper steps forwards was probably a better idea. She's skilled at fighting, but she's terribly out of shape since her days in the organization. Plus, she doesn't like walking for long periods of time.

"Monster digging!!!" Azuki sprung beside Tsutomu and bounced up and down on her heels. "If I create a giant whirlpool in the area, do you think the monsters will come out?"

”Maybe!” Tsutomu chimed in the same peppy voice Azuki had as he casually lead the group, "It'll definitely make it easier on us if you soften the dirt and make it cave in on itself rather than us picking at the ground with sticks all day."

"Can we get cool item drops when we defeat monsters too?" The amount of questions Azuki had was only getting bigger and bigger the more they pressed on. Unexpectedly, once she reworked her mind a bit, she's started to really, really like this adventure they're having. "Like potions, or teeth and fur that we can sell for money or make into clothing and stuff?"

”Perhaps not the village we just casually wrecked, but you seem to really know how to survive here~ I'm really glad you're with us, you're one smart oneechan <3"

Meanwhile, Ethan observed the group from afar. Actually, it more like he was observing Azuki from afar. The sheer amount of worry he had for her was making him feel terribly ill - is it okay for her to be walking around in broad daylight flashing her beautiful golden locks like that? Is it okay for her to blatantly display her magic in public even if she is using it for work? Is it okay for her to be so close to Tsutomu without worrying that he'll try to emotionally manipulate her in some sort of way or fashion?

Ethan gulped nervously as Azuki and Tsutomu continued to compliment and gush at each other. Why was he the only one who felt that this was so bad?

Ruku ran ahead of the group, his hands outstretched like a bird trying to flap its wings. "Yeee~" He giggled uncontrollably and tried to hug the air. The sound of his feet smacking the ground with each step, the chatter of his friends behind him, and the slight breeze of dry air brushing against his cheeks just felt so great! This was only the second day in their little adventure, but he couldn't stop the hype rushing throughout his body.

"Don't get too far ahead!" Mai nagged like a mother, but had a tiny smile form on her lips as she watched Ruku run around like a child in front of them. "We might have to get some clothes for you guys later... it's not really suitable for dealing with monsters." She looked at Lily and wondered how she could move around in such a long dress.

"I'm tireeed." Lily whined, only taking a few steps and her knees were sinking and nearly kissing the ground. "And it's hot!!!"

Nura wiped the beads of sweat forming on his forehead and agreed. The air was randomly growing hotter and hotter. It was a good thing they were dealing with underground monsters though. It meant water to cool them down, and also a good opportunity for Azuki to practice her powers.

"Woooo!"

"Ruku, stop wandering off."

"My legs hurtttt!"

Ruku continued ahead, and hummed a little tune to himself. "♪ " He sung, unknown to himself that it was foreign language. He stopped in his tracked and noticed a tiny puddle of water. He gave a happy gasp and turned to the group, which were quite a distance behind him now. "Guys!" He shouted out, but his voice came out sounding so tiny since he was so far. "Look what I found!"

"?" Mai felt something was off. She inspected the surroundings with a look of suspicion, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

"I'm going to die if we take another step!"

"Then just do it and stop bothering us."

"But, I need to find Haku!!!"

"Everyone, hurry up~~!" Ruku called out as waved his hand back and forth.

"Can you guys be quiet for a second, I'm trying to––"

And it was that moment that a huge pair of sharp teeth opened up from the ground and swallowed Ruku whole before disappearing back into the ground.

"..........................."

The ground looked perfectly normal and undisturbed despite the fact that Ruku was standing there just a second ago and something gobbled him up.

"Oh.”

Tsutomu and Azuki just stared into the empty space where Ruku once stood without moving a single muscle.

For Azuki, it took a moment. A very, very long moment for her to realize that something horrible had just occurred. Ruku and all of them were just so (tired) happy walking together - complaining, bickering, getting all hyped up about rpg adventures, and then suddenly… suddenly--

“OH NO RUKU-SAN!!!!!” Azuki screamed and rushed towards where Ruku once stood.

Tsutomu was laughing. Just a few moments ago, Mai was struck with a giant cockroach and now, Ruku got eaten alive! What a great turn of events!!! He only continued to laugh as Ethan fled after her - he made the right choice deciding to ditch his lone wolf act; traveling with people is far more enjoyable than going alone. Weird unexpected shit like this happens.

“Ethan-san, what should we do?!” Azuki shouted towards him from ahead as she waved a floating bubble to life, “Should we dig him back?!” To prove her point, she waved her hand even more and the bubble began to reform into a shovel.

“??!?!” Ethan stumbled on his words, his tongue tied and his thoughts suddenly jumbled. He didn't think to run after Azuki; his feet just went after her involuntarily. “I-I…. uh…”

So much for trying to be invisible by sticking towards the back of the group.

His head snapped to the group following behind them in hopes of them answering for him and then ahead towards where Ruku once stood as if he would miraculously become inspired. He didn't.

“Mai-san, what was that??!” Azuki went to the next best person and didn't catch the way Ethan head hung low because of it. “Was that another giant worm?! Can we track it down and get Ruku-san back?!” Her bubble-shovel transformed into razor blades. “Do I have to cut the torso again??!?!”

However, as she ran, she noticed she wasn't getting any closer to where Ruku fell. More specifically, she couldn't see where the giant monster had come from. She squnited her eyes. Her glasses were still working; where did he go?

Abruptly she stopped. "Maybe there's quicksand up ahead??!"

Mai didn't know whether to fall into a huge frenzy upon Ruku's sudden disappearance or to reflect on her regretful decision on somehow becoming Ruku's permanent babysitter. Either way, he was her responsibility now. "Ahhh...." She took a deep breath, trying to get a rational thinking on this situation before it went out of hand.

"Best case scenario, Ruku died immediately and his body respawned to the Kursed Centre. Worst case scenario. He's still being slowly digested right now and he'll have a slow painful death as he's being eaten alive."

"How can you even say all of that with a straight face?" Nura was a bit taken back by Mai's calmness, although slightly impressed at the same time. He knew for sure if Azuki or any of his friends were swallowed up by a monster he wouldn't be anywhere this calm. "I don't think we should be laughing either." Nura glanced over to Tsutomu with a sweatdrop on his head.

"We're Kursed players, so we can't die." Mai shrugged. It was true. But, deep inside, she did feel worried... "And... I have no idea what that is... I've never seen something like it before. It must be a new species. I don't know about quicksand, but we have to be careful. Try not getting any closer to where Ruku was eaten up."

"So, what do you suppose we do then? We can't just give up on him or wait for him to die or hope he dies! We gotta go after him!" Nura's sense of justice just wouldn't allow for them to abandon Ruku like this.

Mai twirled both sides of her pigtails into huge knots as she pondered on what to do. If they attempted to rescue Ruku they could be putting the whole group into trouble and barking more than they could chew at this stage. But, the longer they stalled on what to do, the more trouble he could be in.

"I don't know! We're all struggling to live. It's a man eats man world... err.. in this case monster eats man. I do care about Ruku, I just don't think it's smart blindly chasing after him in this situation."

"Why don't we just flip a coin then?" Lily finally chipped in.

"Stay out of this." The two unanimously told the crazy blonde off.

"Ok, so back to this..." Mai sighed, squabbling with Nura wasn't gonna get them anywhere. She was also getting real tired of this main character charade, but she had no choice but to play along. It was the rules. "Ethan, what are your thoughts on this?"

Ethan really didn't like being the main character. Instead of answering, he just shrugged his shoulders and mumbled an I don't know under his breath. If he were to be frank though, he just wanted to leave Ruku and return to somewhere safe. If what Mai said is true, then there's no need to go looking for him if he was just going to revive himself later anyway. It would be wasted energy and effort on his and everyone else's part. But saying that straight to Azuki's face... he knew she wouldn't be happy with that.

"I'm with Nura-san; we can't just leave Ruku to die like that!!!" Azuki's sense of justice wouldn't leave him either. Not only was it not fair, but she also has faced many situations where she was close to death (whether she knew it or not). It's terrifying. She couldn't imagine what Ruku must be going through.

With her legs unable to keep still, she was fidgeting from where she stood. "Should we split into groups? One goes back and checks if Ruku's back at the center and the other goes on ahead??"

"And how do you plan on finding him, nee-chan?" Tsutomu tried to keep a straight face (he didn't), but his default persona required him to be forever 'smiley' anyway so he continued to enjoy himself while giving no clues or any form of advice. "We don't know where that monster went or what will await us if we start looking."

"Uh, um..." Azumi wasn't very good at planning complicated things like this out. "I... I'LL SWIM IN THE QUICKSAND!!!" Azuki encased herself inside a bubble to prove her point. "Actually, I can't swim, but I can still try!!!"

She took a few steps forward with (J)hope keeping her strong despite not knowing what's happening. But the fact that she couldn't hear Ethan follow behind her (and the fact that Tsutomu was still laughing despite how dire the situation is) made her falter. "Nura-san! Mai-san! You guys! You'll come with me... right?"

Nura was right at Azuki's heels and had to pull her by the wrist to prevent her from taking anymore steps. "I know you were never really good at using your brain since back in The Organization days, but what have those days taught you... if anything." He shook his head and pulled Azuki beside him so that they were basically a hip apart. He wanted to tell her not to be so reckless, but he was just as reckless as she was.

"Of course I'm going."

At least they could be reckless together.

Mai looked at Azuki and Nura with her lips pursed inwards. Her survival instincts were screaming NO to be honest. Mai had been alive for more than fifty years and with that came experience and the ability to read the situation to an extent. These two foreigners though were basically just flushing that down the toilet.

On the bright side. They could always just die and respawn if things go awry. Mai didn't exactly like the pain, but this was a game with infinite lives.

You only live... forever? She threw her hands in the air with the flick of her wrists in creator-san nii's most infamous and overused hand gesture.

Oh, dear holy beings, help us. Mai prayed under her breath and nodded.

"Alright, I'm in. A little tidbit though. There are people that live underground, we call them Moles, and they look just like you guys with the wide variant of hair and eye colour. Though their skin are like super pale white that I just call them ghosts to be honest... Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. They don't live around this area, but they do scavenge around. If you bump into them, get as far away as possible. They have a bad history with us Sylvians and we just don't get along. They're known to be hostile and from the few I've met, very short-tempered and ready to use their fists before anything, even though they claim to be smart and call us Sylvians and barbaric for being strong and more well-built than them, but if that was a case why did their ancestors freaking escape into a hole in the ground when the world was ending, was that suppose to be smart, well it wasn't because look at us now, we whom did stay above the ground and took every hit from the wars, aliens, and radiation adapted and evolved to the world as a result and so have our bodies so they can take that with their so called superior knowledge!!!"

"..."

"Ahem." Mai put her hand on her chest and tried to slow down her breathing before she got all worked up again. "Also, when we're deep underground the air is denser and the radiation doesn't reach so your powers weaken... or if the abilities were granted by radiation it'll just disappear. Apparently, you guys already have powers so they won't disappear, but just saying they'll be weaker than they are above ground."

This might be a suicide message after all. The point of them going after monsters right now was to train their newly improved abilities, but what was the point of that if they were just going back to square one underground!? Oh, well. Ruku's safety was more important right now. "Okay, thanks for the info. Are you guys ready?" He looked to Mai, and then to Azuki. He trailed his fingers from Azuki's wrist into the space between her fingers and pressed tightly.

"Can I––"

"You stay here." And with that, Mai took a huge jump into the air continuously crushed the ground with her fists, immediately leaving huge evident dents with each punch.

Because she wasn’t smart, because she was clumsy, and because she was gullible, she wasn’t confident. Even with countless missions engraved into her reflexes and guiding her sympathetic nervous system, the uncertainty of both her and everyone else’s well being and the situation kept her on her toes with ants crawling under her skin. And yet, any sort of hesitation and worry she felt in those few moments immediately dissipated into the dry air with just his presence by her side. Gone so effortlessly and replaced by a tender, familiar warmth that soaked deep into her bones.

She closed her eyes. The warmth engulfed her in a gentle embrace as if to reassure her, everything is going to be ok. A smile blossomed across her face and her fingers folded to lock his hand with hers. Even if the situation was dangerous and careless, as long as she had everyone by her side, everything will be ok.

Opening her eyes, she twirled her freehand to form a human-sized whirlpool the shape of a cone and drilled at the spots Mai struck. Each hit softened the ground and made progress a lot easier for the both of them.

Tsutomu took a step back and whistled at how hard the two were drilling in. “It would be bad if they hit a support underground and the whole area caves in or something, but I doubt that’ll happen since there’s already giant worms crawling underground anyway."

Ethan twisted his head at Tsutomu before slowly returning his gaze towards the three. He gulped nervously as he watched.

Never doubt anything. More than that, never jinx it because it might just come true.

Just as Mai and Azuki were working away they didn't notice that a certain spot that they attacked next was quite soft... and sensitive. That even the slightest of footsteps could cause it to crumble.

They did more than a light step top it. IF anything it was an all out tango! They were freaking bashing the hell out of the ground with their full force power.

So, as Tsutomu has predicted (what a psychic, eh.), the ground beneath the two girls gave away and collapsed the very moment Azuki made her next movement.

"!?" With no time to react Mai cursed to herself and tried to grab at the walls of dirt besider her to stop herself, but that only succeeding in more than a few bloody fingernails as she fell to her doom. Why didn't anything ever go right!!??

Luckily enough, for the others, the huge gapping hole in the ground wasn't wide enough for them to fall in.

"Woow!" Lily exclaimed with fearless eyes and hung her legs over the hole as she sat down.

What about Nura? Well, his quick reflex already had him tumbling down head first with the D cups girl he loves so much.

”AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!” Azuki did the most natural thing in the world and screamed as she fell down the hole. Tears trickled past her eyes as the air whipped at her face. Just what went wrong? Mai and her were doing just fine a few moments ago beating the heckie out of the ground as if it were their own personal punching bag, and now she was falling to her death for the second time this week.

”Whoops!” Tsutomu covered his mouth as if to gasp. Neither his voice nor his expression changed though (he doesn't even try sometimes), and he took a few safe steps forward to peek down into the hole that was made.

Ethan followed behind him in horror, his whole body shaking at just being near the hole. He stepped beside Tsutomu and turned to him with lips quivering with the intent to say something, but fear lodged his words in his throat.

”If you're wondering, no, I didn't cause that to happen, and I didn't expect it to happen either. No, I don't have any items with me that could save them and no, I am not jumping to save them." The smile he had was as typical as ever and showed no concern over their wellbeing. When he turned to Ethan however, the corners of his mouth widened. "Would you, main character-kun?”

Ethan’s pupils constricted at Tsutomu''s words. Rather than answering, he squeezed his eyes shut and looked away. He didn't need to answer. Tsutomu probably already knew what he would say before he even popped up the question.

A chuckle escaped his lips. As expected from their main character. What a coward.

He bent down towards the hole and tunneled his mouth with his hands to project his voice louder. “Azuki-nee! Use your powers to create a platform! Don't worry about not having water, there are aquifers underground you can use!”

”???!” Azuki barely heard what Tsutomu said over her own screaming, but Zukquisha heard enough to get the overall gist of what she needed to do. Good thing there's the Zukquisha that listens when Azuki isn't.

Twisting her body, she faced downwards and outstretched her arms to create a whirlpool below them by pulling in the water from in between the rocks around her and freezing it to create a landing. Leaving the top still water, she formed giant bubbles to help cushion their landing before they broke their bones from the fall. Especially Azuki who fell face first into it.

Mai managed to land in the same pose she did when she fell off the floating island in the sky with her fist striking the the frozen platform Azuki created. Thankfully, Mai didn't go crashing through the ice with her insane strength. Instead, she left huge cracks that stretched out into more tinier ones.

Mai looked back up and saw that the entrance of the hole they fell through was quite some ways up. Thankfully Azuki was here or else that might have been an instant kill.

"Damn, I didn't expect that." Nura rubbed his head and got up on his feet as he helped Azuki up as well. The water was shallow where they landed, but it seemed to go on deeper in one direction. Nura turned to the opposite direction and found that there were rocks and a solid path where they could stand and venture on while staying dry. "Let's go that way." He pointed.

Mai gave a slight nod and carefully made her way to the dryer option. "..." Mai suddenly stopped. "Hm... I think... I might be able to find Ruku." She suddenly spoke out, although in a questioning tone filled with self-doubt.

"Huh? How?"

"I might. I'm not sure yet, but there's something I'm sensing... Us Sylvians do have enhanced senses. But, do you still wanna continue on? Do you think the others up there can hear us?"

Azuki whined and rubbed her face as she stood. That wasn't the best landing she's ever had, but at least she made it out with only sore cheeks. Wincing at the dulling pain, she followed after the two and stopped once she saw Mai stop.

"Let's keep going!" Azuki answered immediately. They already came this far, why would they back out on their friend now? Was there something dangerous up ahead? She was concerned over Mai's caution and took another step forward to demonstrate her resolve. "If you yell, will it reach them? I might be able to get up there if I manipulate the water around or something!!!"

She manipulated the nearby water to form hooks in her hands, hinting she's willing to rock climb up there if she needs to.

Mai shook her head. She couldn't sense if what was up ahead or dangerous or not, but it just didn't give her the best feeling. She also hoped that Ruku wouldn't be ripped to shreds by the amount of time they were taking to get to him. "Ah!" She knew of a solution to see if Ruku had respawned or not. "Can you make sure to get Ethan down? I need to borrow something that Lettie put in his bag."

Mai didn't want to bring the others down at first because she thought that maybe the three of them were just enough, but backup couldn't hurt. Tsutomu survived up till now with like 30 kurses and Lily could work as a great bait since she was probably crazy enough to say yes. Oh, yeah. And Ethan's backpack.

"Despite the boaster effect that being above ground has, looks like this place is a perfect fit for you." Nura tried not too sound impressed, but he was proud of his future wife––

“Ok!” Azuki agreed immediately to Mai’s request with a nod. Although Nura’s comment could be understood with a negative connotation (they’re underground surrounded by dirt and rock with dangers lurking around and it’s dark and probably cold), Azuki smiled because she believed Nura was complimenting her powers.

“Thanks, Nura-san! Maybe I should make an underground home too like the mole people!” Convenient that there’s still water undisturbed underground and lucky for her that Tsutomu was there to point it out or else she’d be dead.

Heading back, she formed stairs from the water around and only bumped into the dirt and stone a couple dozen times or so before landing back on normal ground.

“Ethan-san!!!!!!!!!!!” Azuki’s voice reverberated throughout the hole’s walls and made herself known to her friends at the surface well before her figure could even be seen by them.

Ethan was hit with a million emotions at once once he heard her voice. First and foremost, relief washed over him the moment he heard her voice calling after him. She was alive, she was safe, and she sounded as bright and cheery as she always did.

And she was calling for him.

Then, came the anxiety. Why was she calling for him? What could she possibly want from him? He’s not physically fit like Mai, (conniving) smart like Tsutomu, or skillful with his powers as Azuki is with hers. What possible use could he have other than the ‘main character privileges’ bestowed onto his unsightly figure.

“He’s here~!” Tsutomu answered for Ethan in a sing-song like voice and pushed him forward so he could meet Azuki. In response to Ethan momentarily darting his head to face him, Tsutomu covered his mouth again. He could see the cold sweat on his face and how his eyes were blown open like he was a deer in headlights. He was so pathetic is was just downright hilarious.

Azuki’s breathing was light once she reached the surface and she gripped her knees to take a short breather. “Maybe I should have joined oniichan during his daily workouts more…”

After taking a few full breaths she gripped Ethan’s hands. “Mai-san needs you to help us!” And without any more explanation, guided him back to where Nura and Mai were.

“I brought back Ethan-san!” Azuki announced and held their joined hands high. About ⅓ of the way down, Zukquisha suggested for Azuki to use her powers like a cane so she could locate where the walls were. Thus, there was a small stream of water pouring out from the palm of her free hand as if it were an extension of it which she carelessly waved around everywhere and consequently got Ethan, Nura, and Mai wet. It's OK though because the water doesn't get left behind on the person as she moved it around (Zukquisha also told her to conserve).
