So I guess it's kind of 'realism' (funny for a fantasy story, but still)... In a more realistic, or even reasonable world, the hardware would be banned and as much as possible destroyed, not to mention almost entirely abandoned by the populace after the first incident.

In another realistic (consistent world), unless he was way sadder than I picture him, there's no way Kirito would go back into the VR world... and if he was ill enough to want to, it would be appropriate to treat him like an addict.

So in a sense, the world fell apart to me due to a bunch of blatant plot patches set up to make the 'happy' (finger quotes VERY intentional) ending and to leave room for sequels/OVA/whatever.

Thanks for expounding more, I think I get where you are coming from a lot better now. I personally feel the story was realistic in the respects you mention, except the public trust with using the AmuSphere to play ALO after the SAO incident; that was unbelievable to me and one of the biggest story flaws in my view. This is where how you view the world and if you are optimistic or pessimistic about human nature, especially under certain circumstances, comes heavily into play. What one person sees as real to their sensibilities may be unreal to another; I don't think either is wrong in their belief because humanity has potential to do both good and evil. No one can know for certain if at a given time someone will choose to do what's good for the whole or be selfish; history bears out cases of both selfless sacrifice and great hubris.

What I like about SAO is that it has an optimistic outlook on humanity; good wins out in the end. Most players, though they are fighting for survival with limited resources, are portrayed as banding together to fight for the common goal of escape. Their biggest enemy isn't the monsters in the game or the game master, but themselves. Kirito goes from being largely self absorbed to fighting for Asuna and the hope they would all escape. The caring nature he developed carries over into the second arc and really drives the narrative from thereon; whereas he was only concerned with himself at the start, he's now living also for his beloved and his friends.

To me, them deciding to entrust humanity with the World Seed was symbolic of their hope for the future; they put their faith in mankind that it could be trusted with this knowledge and would use it for good purposes having learned from the mistakes of the past. Is this overly idealistic, yes, but the opposite would be them having a jaded view of life and not being very trusting of others; which I feel is a terrible and conflicting message to end with. The game taught them to trust others, because they had no other choice in order to survive, and that distrust and discord lead to isolation, fear, despair, and death. Had they abandoned that lesson in trust, it would have conflicted with the progression of the characters the way I see things.

On the flip side, I took fault with the sister/cousin incest undertone and the tentacle monster scene with Asuna in the control room; both were totally unnecessary to advance the narrative and were cheap gimmicks undermining the positive messages they touched on in my view. Otherwise though, I loved the first arc, I think I'm in the minority thinking the romance between Kirito and Asuna enhanced the narrative by balancing the brutality of the game with a softer human touch. I thought the second arc was alright, but it definitely could have been a lot better; I was still highly entertained none the less.

I always find it fascinating how people can watch the same show and see things so very differently, but then again that's what makes us all individuals; the way a show impacts us is unique to us.

I wonder when GGO will air. If it's summer, then there will be two huge series to air in 2014.

Depending on which direction they take the show. The promo teaser opens with a pretty bad fan service shot. I Kinda liked SAO because they were a bit less on the fan service. I guess whatever direction the market goes I guess... Final Boss Revi?

I still have to call it in my head, second half of season. Everything changes so is just as good as a second season XD. Must call it season 1.5 for simplicity I guess.

Looks like this is going to be the official thread of the second season I passed out the hell out when it was announce, but I'm glad it was activated I only read a few pages of it, but it looks like have to read the light novels through for the Phantom Bullet as a priory one directive just so I can get a better understanding of the story.

I intend to repeat history and completely ignore the SAO thread when it's airing
