I'm not seeing fans of SAO on this site gushing about it anywhere, but I can find innumerable posts bashing it to no end with the same tired reasons time and again. The critics seem to far outweigh any rabid fans in terms of speaking out, at least that I've seen on this site and similar ones. That tells me this goes way beyond a vicious cycle of tit for tat and is more a "stop liking what I don't like" thing where a select group of people can't stand/fathom the idea something they don't like can be so popular and feel the need to speak out constantly. They don't like that SAO is successful because they feel it has little to no merit while other shows they like don't do as well and they likely feel should be getting more attention.

Although the vitriol was more than palatable, it felt like there were plenty of supporters saying how great of a show this was to the point where I - someone who thinks the show is a 7-or-so on average - thought they overrated it, as well. And not everybody who frequents here and posts about it here is bothered by the people here - other threads, forums, and IRL folks can make a person irate and this just happens to be the place where they vent.

Where exactly are you seeing this? I think I've seen like maybe 7 people on CR in the forums rate SAO above an 8. Let alone say they think it's a masterpiece or the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not counting reviews, since those are inflated for almost all shows on here.

I generally seem to have different tastes than other people.

For example I genuinely REALLY liked the Mother's Rosario arc. However unlike most people, I was not a fan of Yuuki. Rather I liked how Kirito, Asuna, and even Asuna's mother had some character depth in this arc. We saw that Kirito was able to offer support without taking the spotlight, we saw he had male friends, we saw he had a genuine hobby outside of playing MMOs. With Asuna we saw her problems at home, her desires, and how she wanted to communicate with her mother. Yuuki on the other hand I can explain in one sentence, "A sick girl who is awesome at video games and whose purpose was to have the audience shed tears."

I also like Shino, but I am conflicted with her. Because at her best she is awesome and funny. But at her worst she just becomes another heroine that drools over Kirito. The reason I love Charlotte in Infinite Stratos so much over the rest of the girls is because she is not just another heroine that drools over Ichika. The rest are, but Charlotte tries to help the other girls out, she tries to get Ichika to like her rather than just draping herself over him, she acts like a friend more than a heroine. Shino is like that 70% of the time, but the last 30% makes me want to punch a kitten.

I think you might really like Alicization. There aren't any girls (mostly) its just Kirito and Eugeo in the world's most epic bromance. Frodo and Sam style.

I read somewhat of a summary and it seems to have a pretty complex plot. So it should be entertaining.

Honestly I think I am just getting sick of harems altogether. They tend to focus too much on the girls and not enough on the plot. At first that was okay but recently it feels like I am watching the same show over and over again just in a different skin.

I wish harem shows would be more like Irregular at Magic Highschool. The main character was OP and a few girls had a crush on him, but the story focused so much on the plot, on the world, and on a various number of characters, that I never felt the MC's "harem leadness" was really all that obnoxious. Absolute Duo, Saekano, Fafnir, Testament, and even World Break are all so obnoxious with the harem aspect though.

I really enjoy watching SAO. Is it anything super special that gets the hipsters happy, no, but its good. Season 1 was really great; Season 2 was good, but slower. I just want to see if SAO can evolve into something more in the next season, I look forward to watching it.

Wrong. It has Akihiko Kayaba.

OBJECTION!!! He was crazy, but he was just a crazy programmer, not an inventor (his team of scientists invented the Nerve-gear, anyways). The team of scientists don't count either because they didn't create Nerve-gear knowing Kayaba would use it to trap plays inside the game, hence they had no malice intent and were not crazy.

Besides, Kayaba doesn't have enough chunnibyo to be a mad scientist!

My work here is done.

Overruled! Kayaba is not just a crazy programmer. He is the designer of both the nerve gear and the cardinal system as well as a version of the fulldive device that was used to create the medicuboid. Also, he wears a lab coat.

I've gotten past the fourth episode now, and I'm glad to say that I've finally found a character I really enjoy in Silica. Asuna's starting to grow on me a bit, too. Too bad Silica poofed out of existence on us in the very next episode. I hope she'll be back.

She's back in Extra Edition and later arcs of SAO 2, not much more in SAO 1.

Really? I have to wait until the latter half of the second season to see the character I actually like again? Ah, there'll be more. The series seems to be picking up as it goes along.

None of the "harem girls" were in the original light novel for SAO. It was all about Kirito and Asuna and their journey really. Characters like Lisbeth and Silica were introduced as part of side stories years later by popular demand. The anime staff took the liberty of adding in the side stories in the anime version, since they happen during the same time period as the original novel.

Yeah, the second arc in season 2 is where you'll see them all again besides the Extra Edition special that takes place between S1 and S2.

Yeah, you're are only 4 episodes in. I think its a TAD early to say she's the only character you'll ever like.

I haven't read the light novels, so I can't make a comparison.

I figured as much. I was just explaining why Silica, among a few others, isn't a recurring character in season 1 of the anime there.

*smirks* and?

So you have proven that Kayaba is a mad scientist. However...

That is all that you can prove!

You see, my original objection said you're anime "lacks" mad scientists, not that there are "no" mad scientists. Despite the fact that Kayaba is a mad scientist, he appears very rarely (I could count the number of times on my hand regarding how many times he appears) throughout the anime. He appears less than the other main villains of SAO, for this matter.

Ergo, my friend, you're "mad scientist" lacks in screen time severely, especially compared to other mad scientists! And any arguments from the visual novel and manga do not count because my initial objection was "you're anime".

The prosecution rests.
