he is grinding with the guild in the morning and grinding solo at night, he's solo after all. grinding at night is his favorite time, less people

Falling into treasure guardian's ambush unintentionally is a beginner's mistake. Since Moonlit Black Cats are members of PC Research Club IRL, they should have at least have a little knowledge about traps and ambushes in RPG(unless it is their first time playing one). The Black Cats' leader seems to be only one who knew the basics of gaming otherwise they would have been annihilated long before they met Kirito. Well, I can't blame people for making mistakes, but only in this game, you pay for your mistake with your life.
My verdict for this episode: The story is still great but a little bit predictable. |

I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

Aww man the cliches, and all those death flags for second best girl (second girl for that matter).
I'm glad this didn't air around Christmas or I would have been hit a lot harder... |

Click to show or hide After that it actually showed him at level 70 when he swapped his weapon to fight the boss under the tree... very briefly... for like 0.5 seconds LOL |

just curious, what kind of time frame do you guys think this episode happened over?
at first it seemed to be a relatively short time frame to me but then something about the message she left at the end made me think that maybe it wasn't all that short of a time frame. it makes me wonder even more considering there was at least two months between the start of the first episode and the second one. |

Some info from the light novel about episode 3, if anyone is interested.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide First of all, regarding his level changes. He meets them at level 40, however, in the light novel it was stated that he sneaks out every night to the higher floors to train all by himself. Thus, showing how he's already level 48 the next time we saw his level. However, this side story was portrayed as Kirito's flashback during Christmas so the death of the guild members already happened a few months ago. That's why he was already level 70 during Christmas when he went to challenge Santa Claus. Also, some details were left out, so to anyone who's interested, read on. There was a reason why Kirito blamed himself so much for Sachi's and everyone's death was because, not as a direct quote, but something along the lines: Sword Art Online was different from other MMO's. Level, equipment and stats were not important in SAO because it turned into a death game. The most important was "information". And Kirito had that "information". However, he hid it from everyone else, his level and his knowledge of the game. In the light novel, when they bothered to open the chest, Kirito had told them not to and only gave them the reason "It looked suspicious". However, he knew that it was a trap because he had a detection skill but couldn't tell them due to him hiding his level. He blamed himself of their deaths because even though, they had leveled up and gotten stronger, he did not reinforce their knowledge further on SOA. This relates to the guild leader's hatred to Kirito, who was a "Beater". The anime doesn't really explain much about Beaters. By the definition of Beaters, they are people from the beta test, but also people with "information" but selfishly hid them for themselves. And it was because of this act that Kirito thought that it was his fault everyone was killed. That was why the guild leader stated that,"Kirito didn't have the right to join them". Also, I was happy that they included the last message from Sachi in this episode because this was a very important bit. Regarding how Kirito received the message, Kirito had set up a combined inventory with Sachi before she died. This was a very important factor because it was close to "marriage" in SOA. However, by marriage, everything is combined and also allows couples to view every window of each other. Although Kirito and Sachi wasn't "married", this combined inventory which was created under the excuse of "sharing potions would be more convenient", showed how close Sachi and Kirito were. Sachi's death cause Kirito to be devastated even though he kept promising her that he'll protect her. And the reason why Kirito was able to get that message was because Kirito didn't delete the combined inventory even months after their death. He couldn't. So he left it there, including any items that was in it. Sachi's message was a timed item that would appear on Christmas inside that combined inventory. And it was this message that made Kirito be able to recover his motivation to live and fight on. |

Thank you, LN readers-that actually clarifies the problems I had with the episode. I was really confused as to how the levels meant ANYTHING, given that if anything, on one hand, they may have asked him to join anyways to have some back up muscle, or at worst, just not let him join up. I didn't see the correlation. With that information, it makes a bit more sense. Still a pretty hard hitting episode, and it's amazing how likeable Sachi was despite that they cut out what I feel was some really interesting information about how close she was with Kirito.
Also, since we saw guild-to-guild combat before Kirito fought the Xmas boss, perhaps the series will touch on player-killing. *shivers* A nasty thought, but SAO's shown it's not afraid to be really dark at times. Really unique for a shounen demographic show [I assume?] to waste no time being a tad depressing. XD Also, a lot of people have griped about the pacing. I don't really mind it-the game's proven to be QUITE slow paced, I mean, clearing floor 1 took a month, real-time. We have plenty of shows that focus on day-to-day life, and if this is only a one or two cours [12-24 episode] series, I don't mind them jumping around to the most significant events in the timeline. Do the light novels run similarly, or take their time with anecdotes and such? They regularly give dates, so it's not that jarring for me personally. |

My god he levels fast, how many monsters is he slaughtering anyways? xD I noticed it, but thought maybe he'd accomplished a couple of things on his own between the two events, and thought there may have been time/experience enough between them for it to not be that odd. (I'm not a gamer, and am not paying enough to the technicalities in SOA to recognize whether or not that was unusually fast progress.) |

What a sad episode. There's plenty of RPGs I've played that had that one dungeon or area that wiped me out before I was ready to go there. There are the invisible borders that have one type of monster you grind out to higher levels and the going too far and coming up on a hoard of monsters that have the ability to put you to sleep and then kill you. It's sad that they didn't find the chest suspicious, also too bad there wasn't a skill like peek to see whether it was safe or not.
