watched a couple more episodes and it is growing on me. though i still think its moving by super fast. seems like a bunch of stuff is happening in between episodes.

You can also think of the pacing in the SAO arc like a collection of interrelated short stories, like andrzej Sapkowski's The Last Wish (one of the original The Witcher novels). It makes more sense that way.

The ALO arc in the second half of the series acts more like one single story from beginning to end.

And yeah, Kirito caring about NPCs was a little weird.

also this show goes against itself a couple times. in the first episode, kirito says you dont feel pain in the game to the red haired guy while in several episodes when people get hurt they are in agony...

The game can transmit experiencing pain to the user. But if I remember right it wasn't activated until after Kayaba Akihiko informed all the players that SAO was now permadeath (and the pain threshold wasn't pushed up to 100%).

It might also be a mind-over-matter thing, since later someone gets their hand cut off without much pain. I do remember the pain threshold becoming an important mechanic in the final fight at the end of the series, though.

yea, it's one of those game mechanics that's there, but it only gets brought up a few times, so you're likely to forget it. the pain absorption is completely adjustable. I think it's only actually brought up twice.. once when Kirito and Sugou, and once at the beginning of Phantom Bullet when they mention that GGO's pain absorption is set to a higher level than SAO/ALO because the game was made in america, and apparently all americans are wussies.

No, and he didn't. He was just caught wildly off guard by everything.

chapter 16.5 was just fanfic. and just because it happens "off-screen" doesn't mean it didn't happen.

anyway...

16.5 was written by the author, he just kept it on an age-locked page on his blog; it wasn't published with the rest of the light novels due to its content. Of course it didn't take long for it to escape its cage and begin roaming the internet.

I'm not sure how long the light novels are, but there are 12 of them so far.

they're about 200-400 pages each. would be nice if there was an official translation, but the only place you can read them in english is online.
