I take it you watch a lot of shounen anime hmm? Commenting on your remarks.... about most anime being targeted at boys.
Shounen stands for young males or closer translation would be boys. Yes that type of anime is what most people Outside of Japan would know about. But than their is much more anime, targeting young girls, and even kids under 6. Their just not as popular or as well known out side of Japan.

on another note for those that claim anime is not a cartoon.. their different, I have two words for you. " BULL SHIT!!! " Their is nothing different separating Japanese cartoons from American, French, or even German cartoons.

I have watched a lot of anime, and plan to watch more, may it be either of the following genre:
Action | Adventure | Bishojo | Bishounen | Comedy | Cooking | Drama | Ecchi | Education |
Family | Fantasy | Game | Harem | Historical Settings | Horror | Kids | Light Novel | Literature |
Magic | Martial Arts | Mature | Mecha | Music | Mystery | Novel | Parody | Romance | School Life |
Science-Fiction | Shounen Ai | Sports | Super Power | War | Yaoi | Yuri

How I choose what to watch is posted somewhere on the forum.
I get bored by watching the same type of anime over and over.

Cartoons may be animated and look like anime, but cartoons are not anime. I am not saying they are two totally different things, they are indeed of the same type and are inspired by each other, but they are two different things.
In stating anime are cartoons, would be the same as stating manga are comics,
Not that I will change my view on this, but do specify what makes them exactly the same and give examples showing there are no differences what so ever;)

On another note if you tried to reach me with foul language, if failed.
But if you are use it, do it correctly, as it is actually one word, "bullshit", if you still wish to use two words you can use "bovine stool", large letters do mean you are yelling, if you where then ok, also one exclamation mark was enough, additional emphasis by adding more then one exclamation mark was unnecessary, at least for for what I care

Anime is short for animeeshun, the Japanese word for Animation. The Japanese call all cartoons Anime. At that you find Japan loves the anime Spiderman, and X-men. ( Being your going to be a stickler about how I say bullshit... Than I will be a stickler about using the proper meaning behind the word anime. )

Their is nothing that separates anime from cartoons, their just two words from two languages that stand for the same thing.
At that if your going to try to attack American or French animated shows trying to say there somehow more childish than Japanese animated shows. Don't bother we have been over this already, In Japan 90% of animeeshun/animation is made for young kids. The same can be said for every other country. So that remark does not hold water. If you trying saying yes but J-Anime has story lines American cartoons do not, another fail there because the fact is Conan the Adventurer had a real good story, so did Spiderman, X-men, justice league, Gargoyles, Spawn, Maxx, Eon Flux, and 100's of others. I also can list 100's of J-anime that does not have a story, And starts over new every day.

Now that we got that out of the way, how about you try telling me what separates them. (As you should have summarized by now, their is no difference.)

Don't forget I am a fellow fan of animated shows from Japan, I just admit it to my self and others what it is. No point in lien to one self or others.

your 13 years old! Your a child, a little kid!

Your just old enough to watch PG13 shows without your mother there with you.
You prove my point on how childish you still are by what you had to say.

In the end J-anime is to the most part childish because it is a fact that 90% of it is made for little kids.

Shounen stands for little boys, or boy.

I may be a stickler but at least now you know...

When in Rome....
If I where in Japan I would say all animated is anime, but I am not, nor am I Japanese

Ok, I do reason with that I over reacted in my first post with saying all cartoons are childish period.

You yourself used "... J-anime..." and "... American cartoons ..." and not American anime or animation
Anime is specified as animated art, where as cartoons is partly animated art but also still drawings of art :D

What anime list (in English, French, German, Spanish and so on ) do have Spiderman, X-men and the other you mentioned?
None, not a single one
Top Cartoons search: http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/G/greatest/cartoons/results.html
Top Anime search: http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime
The only ones that are on both are famous movies such as Spirited Away, Akira and Princess Mononoke,
I do see pokemon there too, but it was not high enough on the list
I am not familiar with the newest cartoons out there, but have seen episodes on over 50% of the cartoons list

On a personal note, I know they are similar in that they are animated, but J-anime to me is Anime, animation from other countries rarely is as satisfying. I watch Simpson, Futurama, Family Guy and other cartoons, did also watch Spiderman amongst others as a kid.

Shounen stands for little boys, or boy.

As you mentioned it to me (Shouen) earlier I looked it up and I found this referring to it on wiki

According to Japanese law, the term "shonen" refers to "a person from the time they enter elementary school until the time they are 15 years of age" [1], and "Any person who has not reached the age of 15 years" (Juvenile Law (少年法 Shonen Hō?), Article 2.1). In the realm of education and culture, this is the period of compulsory education. While the term "shonen" can refer to both young males and young females, the generally accepted term for young females is shōjo.

I too am a fan of animation from Japan, even hate if they dub it away from the original language, and I never questioned that you are a fan.
I agree to disagree, on the anime and cartoon issue I don't think either of us will change our mind, perhaps we should have poll and see whom gets the most votes

hmm.. it depends on what you are watching, i think. Some anime are for young children that's why they're childish. Although I find anime with predictable storyline childish particularly the ones with shounen and shoujo themes like Shugo Chara, Bleach...(my opinion). and i also think that anime is not childish it's just overrated. And to those who think it's childish, I think they just haven't seen enough good anime.

As mentioned before, your friends probably take children's anime shows as examples, and therefore directly make the connection that all anime series are "childish." I disagree. Some animes deal with very delicate and "grown up" themes and issues, which definitely makes them non childish.
