no im not kidding as popular as Gurren Lagann is for the mecha fans, its not as popular as mainstream moe shows like Haruhi or K-ON for example
TTGL is really popular even among non-mecha fans and the memes alone speak for itself. Try to lurk more you'll see what I mean.

I don't usually go digging deep for obscure anime titles (not that it wouldn't be an interesting endeavour; I just don't have the time), so I can't think of many really 'underrated' shows off the top of my head. All the ones I can think of are relatively new, like maybe Ano Natsu de Matteru or Un-Go. One's a contender for my top favorite romance anime, and the other is a really interesting take on the mystery/detective genre. They deserve love D:

Why do people mention Clannad?
It's not underrated at all.
Pretty sure the tv rating was high, the sales was great, it's one of the best KyoAnis. It gets a lot of praise. And so on.

I have to put my hat in for "Serial Experiments Lain". Its been my top anime ever since I watched it and I swear its like I'm the only person who has ever watched it sometime. "Haibane Renmei" and "Now and Then,Here and There" are also amazing and have received little to no love. I remember picking up the "Now and Then, Here and There" box set for around $25 dollars (Having never heard of the series) and still consider it the best purchase I have made.

Nabari no Ou.
The main character's overly apathetic behavior can turn some people off, but everything else fascinated me. The vibrant, pastel-like presentation was very clean, adn the concept of modern-day ninjas was great albeit underutilized in certain scenarios.

This is oh so true. They happened to show Golden Boy one day at an anime club I used to attend in college, and I've been a huge fan ever since. Quite possible one of the funniest anime I've ever seen. Every single episode is great. Great Teacher Onizuka is another anime that deserves more love these days as well.
I've always thought Outlaw Star was another anime that was seriously underrated. I like it way more than Cowboy Bebop, but it seems like it's always been in its shadow in the anime world. A shame really.
