12 Kingdoms or Jūni Kokuki.

Incredible, incredible series. Also, the books (not mangas!) are brilliant! Lord of the Rings/Narnia/Game of Thrones feel when you read them.

Has the best of -

- SERIOUS character development (Think the main character is useless and annoying? Just you wait...)

- Characters with real personalities (No forced moe crap or fake cuteness here! *cough Clannad cough*)

- Intense, deep storyline (And interweaving, interconnecting plots.)

- Different storylines and point of view (Focuses on a lot of different characters, their relationships to each other, and their countries.)

- Shows the actual struggles of being a ruler of a kingdom (Despair, anger, murderous plots, failing to do what's right...)

- Political fantasy ( In every possible way.)

- Non-stereotypical characters (None of them fall into a particular category like *cough* other animes.)

- Incredible mythology (Borrows a lot from Chinese mythology.)

Others I'd like to mention are:

Saiunkoku Monogatari
- Somewhat like the 12 Kingdoms, but with a lot of well done romance, and more magic. Also far more funny. Has two seasons, but the first season is far better. Based on a series of light novels, now adapted to a manga. Sadly, it has a HORRIBLE ending.

Revolutionary Girl Utena - Older, but seriously brilliant. Made by the same people who made Evangelion so yup. Expect symbolism, an allegorical and metaphysical storyline - and a lot of brain fuck moments.

Adolescence of Utena - Anime wasn't screwed up enough for you? Check out the movie. I'm not sure what the creators were smoking when this popped into their minds.

Baccano Fantastic stories, realistic characters. Amusing, very well written and so out of the ordinary! Want an anime mafia? This is for you.

Princess Tutu This anime totally deconstructs the magical girl prototype anime - reminds me of Puella Magi Madoka Magica in a way. This anime is funny and cute, but gets darker, sinister, twisted and strange as it goes on.

I'm sure if this is already mentioned. If it is not, then this anime is deserved to be mentioned.

that is a really good anime but it's rated pretty highly right? I don't think it's that unpopular either for a fairly dark two episode OVA.

I have the first volume and it's decent, something put me off watching any more though... I think it was that freaky crow pet he has and it literally can only do one thing. There's parts of it I like a lot though.

Kemono no Souja Erin (Beast Player Erin) and Kaiji (though the second season did drag on a little bit). Though I would say that while I *believe* these are not well known, those who have watched them do rate them pretty highly.

Kaiji perhaps. Probably because it has a very particular art style and quite a particular format: Aka. no real action and an un-supernatural setting revolving around long, intense personal trials which mean that some might find the pacing too dragging and the tension too uncomfortable. I myself hugely enjoyed it but have never seen anyone else talking about it, so to me it seems underrated.

I like it because it is sort of like anime James Bond or maybe anime Man with No Name (Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good The Bad and The Ugly). Jing comes into town, solves some problem like a badass, no moral preaching he just kicks ass, makes some chick fall in love with him, and then moves on. I wish it was possible to be that smooth in real life.

Denpa Teki na Kanojo is an obscure anime and not many people know it existed.

I say Gintama. It's really hilarious and makes fun of anything. Whether it's anime, famous people, products, the writers and producers of the show, the manga author, shounen jump, life, and it makes fun of itself to. A lot of people won't watch it because it's over 260 episodes.

For my second pick I'll go with Space Brothers. It is the best slice of life anime I have ever seen. And guess what? IT IS NOT ABOUT TEENAGERS AND THEIR LOVE LIFE AND IT DOESNT TAKE PLACE IN A HIGH SCHOOL. It's about two grown brothers trying achieve their dream of becoming an astronaut and going to the moon. The characters feel so real. Any adult that has a dream or has lost sight of their dream can relate to this. Comedy comes naturally with conversations. None of the dialogue is forced. The voice acting is amazing. I couldn't help but smile throughout all the episodes. There was one episode though where I suddenly found myself crying. I have only cried twice since I started watching anime. You won't find no fantasy in this show. That's what makes the show so real. The only fantasy here is that it takes place in 2024. You guys should watch it

It's really not that obscure... it has considerable attention, most anime sites have it and it has a lot of ratings and discussions on MAL. A lot of shows are less popular than they probably deserve to be but they're not exactly underrated... just less popular. If it was a series It probably would have been more popular.

I side with Maou.

I think some people might know it exists, but I don't think many have watched it.

I saw it once or twice on tv and it was awesome! Now I literally cannot find it in high quality anywhere; Crunchyroll, get on that!

ultimate muscle aka kinnikuman legacy

It wasen't perfect and It could have been better if they had followed the manga a bit closer, but this was still a really fun series which seems to be completely forgotten about. Any wrestling fans should definitely check it out.

Astarotte's Toy.
A lot of people get the wrong idea about it being lolicon when really it's a completly different storie.
