"Crunchyroll on PS3 currently only supports up to 480p..."

Admittedly when reading that part, I was really disappointed, but still happy to have a PS3 App after hoping years for one I just hope in a future update the app will support 720p and 1080p

HD on a PS3 app would have pushed me over to premium, but without it no.

That's strange, a PR guy on the blog said it would definitely support HD. Can they not reuse the PC encodes and have to reencode everything, or is there something else?

I'm pretty sure that that was just referring to watching Crunchyroll on the PS3's browser. (which at any resolution higher then 480p, is pretty much unwatchable)

Rather disappointing if that indeed pertains to the PS3 app, which per the article does seem to be the case. I was thinking the PS3 might be the one app where CR would start with HD from the get go.

I can't say the past history is very encouraging either. We got the Roku app more than 1.5 years ago, and according to what was stated at their panel at Otakon, we could be looking at up to another year (if not longer) before it gets HD.

In contrast, Viz has indicated they will be providing HD out of the gate for their Neon Alley service due in September, and Funimation has touted HD for their Roku app due out sometime in the next couple of weeks.

The one hope for PS3 owners is the fact there are a lot more PS3 consoles out there than Roku units at the moment. (Roku stood at 2.5 million units at the end of 2011 vs. 13.5 million PS3 units sold in the United States as of November 11, 2010).

Oh. Hm. I clicked through to the article and they started reviewing the PS3 app so I assumed that's what the focus was on.

I'd pay for a Funimation subscription in HD. The Neon Alley service is not so interesting to me since it doesn't let me choose what I want to watch when I want to watch it. I'm surprised they're even considering that route.

They can't use the PC encodes as those are in a Flash container. As I understand it, the only device that can use that is the Boxee. (Technically, Google TV might be able to do so, but it appears they are probably using the Android encodes for it).

I hope the bit about 480p in the IGN article is either incorrect or an understanding, but we should know for certain soon. Being limited to 480p would certainly let some of the air out of the tires.

Yeah I was just try to look at the silver-lining in things. I was hoping at least it would suppose at least 720p from the get-go. Really? Roku still hasn't gotten HD yet? That has me worried that it would be years before we get HD on the PS3...

I'm hoping that the writer of the article just wasn't able to access HD during his preview, and that my earlier post was wrong.
