I was all set to set up an annual billing system when I heard about the PS3 app. But with the disgusting news that it's only going to be 480p I'll save my money. No way am I going to pay money for eye cancer. I really hope this is some sort of mistake.

I'll put this out there. Does this look like 480p?:

(This is from the preview article at IGN).

I'm paying specific attention to the amount of text on each line at the bottom, especially with the space already taken up by the sidebar on the left. Of course, it could be that the interface is HD while the anime streams are 480p, but that would seem a bit strange. (The first image in the article is playback of a scene from episode 2 of Oda Nabuna, but I doubt it is sufficient for anyone to make the call on whether it is 480p or HD, as like the others, it is a snapshot of the TV screen.

I read this article. I was like what are they talking about? I hope the app comes next week. Summer is almost over!

I'd expect the interface to be in HD. I really don't know if someone developing a native app for the PS3 would even be allowed to have an interface that maxes out at 480p. Due to the complexities of decoding video on the PS3, whatever library CR's app uses to decode video also supports HD (it's not like CR made their own codec), so it's just a matter of CR supplying the videos in HD.

The only way the app doesn't support HD video is if they're using the browser's flash plugin to decode video, but that'd just be nuts.

Technically, summer literally isn't even half over yet.

The information indicating it will be released on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 appears to be fairly reliable.

That's the reason that CR doesn't have HD on the Roku. The hardware is capable, but they don't provide the videos in HD.

I expect part of the problem there is that some people probably have the Roku hooked up to an old CRT TV via composite video, so they would have to provide at least two versions of every video.

With the PS3, I would think the percentage of persons having it hooked up to a standard definition set would be low enough that if CR could provide only one set of encodings out of the gate, they would go with 720p.

So what you are saying is that PS3 will run the video on 720p right?

This isn't an AD it's in reply to and early statement for hoping Sony TV will start supporting an app for Crunchyroll.. I was simply stating that This tv already has one.. you do have to deal with ads but it comes activated and ready to use with no monthly charge..

That's just speculation on my part. My opinion is that if they could only support a single encode for now, 720p would seem to be a better choice for the PS3.

While 480p is the safe "works with all video displays" choice (as the PS3 would convert it to 480i for older CRT televisions), and works with some of the slowest broadband connections, it is also considerably less likely to get people to plump for a premium membership.

The problem with the Vizio app is that it doesn't support the login. The least expensive device for viewing CR on a TV is the Roku ($60 or less for the low end model), but as I noted earlier, CR only provides 480p encodes for it. Unlike the Vizio app, however, it does support both free and premium accounts.

Well I do own a PS3, but even if I didn't I feel the quality i get on Vizio and the amount I use it means I should buy a premium account here. a specially since CrunchyRoll has seemed to come back to life over the last 6 months or so.. I spend so much time here my cable tv account is like having a worthless burden to me.. BUT I love just a few shows that I can only get if I have a premium account at cable I love them but wish I'd never found the Walking Dead or Falling Skies or Ice Road Truckers. dumb stuff I love.. speaking of the PS3 I sure hope they do 720 my HD 1080 would be much happier to watch that way as 480 doesn't render very well even upscaled..
