For modern I would love to go to tokyo and kyoto for historical purposes. I think I am set to go next year for my first time. Even just from watching anime you can see the country is rich in history and culture, would love to experience it first hand.

I went to Japan a couple of years ago with 2 of my friends. We went to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and somewhere in between we visited Nara & Mt Fuji.

I would suggest Kyoto if you like seeing more of the historical/cultural side of Japan, plenty of temples to see. Not to mention Gion is actually pretty cool and not too far of a walk from Kyoto station. I loved the building, how everything is so relaxed - even saw a couple of tourists bike riding around the area (if I go again, I would hire out a bike and go riding).

Nara. I have one word for you. Deers.
I have never seen so many wild deers in my life. My friends and I had so much fun feeding the deers we actually forgot to go visit the giant Buddah they have there (we're such derps but seriously. omg. deers.) It's a bit hard to navigate around because not many people spoke English (well not too sure if that's the case or we were just unlucky)

Tokyo was okay, really modernised. The subways are always crowded and I found it difficult to navigate around for the first couple of days (we stood there like dumb tourists until a really nice businessman showed us how to get back to our hotel - it was out of his way too because he then went off in the opposite direction). If you like Ghibli then you must visit the Studio Ghibli museum in Tokyo. It's really cool, and you get to take the Catbus to the actual place. The building looks somewhat normal from the outside (except for the 'life size' Laputan robot) version of but on the inside it feels like you've stepped into another world. Don't forget to visit Akihabara (really cheap sticker photos - they have cosplay outfits there where you can get changed and take photos in) oh and Akasaka to get your souvenirs & see the massive temple there.

I regret not making a stopover to visit Himeji Castle, it just looked amazing.

Sorry for the super-long post if you require anymore information feel free to send me an inbox~

Not much love for Tokyo here? I lived in Akasaka and worked in Ebisu and loved every second of it. Work, subway daily was fun and the bustle of it all was part of the experience. I found there was so much to do and see, so many amazing restaurants, friendly people! I went places every night and weekend and could have spent years just exploring Tokyo. Even in Tokyo the castles, shrines, temples and gardens are really nice.

Going west, getting out of the giant city was great too. Not much English which means you can actually use your Japanese skills. Different food, less modern buildings. Great old castles, shrines, temples, gardens. Shinkansen is great but taking a car can show you more along the way. Tea ...

Next time I hope to make it to Kyushu and Hokkaido, maybe Okinawa.

Osaka is definitely modern and has a very fast pace atmosphere. Almost like New York. Lots of night life to enjoy in this city. They had tons going on. I was there during the summer around hanabi so of course there was lots of festivities and such.

Never made it to Kyoto so I can't comment on that one.

Tokyo is a lot like Osaka, but some of the smaller cities are great too.

Shizuoka is very friendly and has lots of temples and beautiful scenery.

I got a friend tempting me to come visit her over Christmas break in Osaka. Airfare awful right now. It's $400+ more than what I got in early June.

You are an idiot if you want to go to Japan because you watched an anime. If on the other hand you want to go because you would like to visit some of their other attractions.. Go for it. But Japan is just as shitty as every other country in the world. All you kids wishing you were Japanese need to get a reality check and start enjoying your own life where you are right now.

Bad day?...

From what I've seen, he's pretty much always like that.

yeah, he shitted on one of my forums too, and i just told him to chill out, calling me an idiot and everything...

Mt. Hakone is awesome in the day, and sucks at night. The whole area turns into a ghost town, and the only place to eat is the hotel restaurants, which are absurdly expensive.

Three month waiting list, eight seats or so, ¥40000 (yen) for twenty pieces of nigiri sushi. It is supposed to be the best. It had better be! Oh and you get to use the subway toilets as his restaurant has no toilets. It is at a subway station in Tokyo in case that makes you want to go to Tokyo.
