Hah... the thing is that statement is true... ever since I moved to where I moved I have people coming to my door on an almost daily basis wanting to save my soul... I have 4 churches in between my house and the closest Starbucks, one of them being the size of a small stadium...

For the most part they are as nice as anyone else, certainly not nicer, and actually downright rude when they find out you're not christian and don't want anything to do with their religion... or worse if you ask questions about their religion, say that because of the talking snake, the virgin birth, burning bush etc that it's for those reasons you can't convert... then you ask "why can't I just believe in god and not follow your religion", that doesn't go over well either... Jesus is not only the reason for the season, but the only path to salvation.

People can believe what they want, I don't care, and I'm just asking questions, so don't get all crazy.

TL;DR, most Christians are as nice as anyone, but I've found they can be pretty pushy assholes when it comes to them "saving you" or when you won't believe with the proof of a man made book or just blindly follow them. Mormons being the worst, then evangelicals born again types.

Sorry for being late to the discussion. I would have to argue that christians are generally no more good-natured than someone of a different religion or no religion. My personal belief is that the holy bible and other such documents are a collection of fables sprinkled with historical references to make it easier to swallow. That being said, Mormons, whose addition to the "canon" is quite interesting to say the least, are generally nice people if you ignore their relentless missionaries riding bicycles through every neighborhood in the world. hah, that was sort of a joke.

In reality it's just as many in this thread are saying; generally it's more a matter of personality than religion, although I feel that through all this talk of fire and brimstone kind of scares people into being nice or otherwise doing the right thing, instead of using reason and some form of morality to make decisions.

people are people. doesnt matter if they have religion or not. doesnt matter what religion. i personally am religious and i adhere to the belief that Jesus and God love us all equally and we should all treat each other with equal respect. i've met many nice religious people just as i've met many nice atheist people. depends on the person in the end

I think it's based on who the person is, NOT their religion. Religion can produce radicals. But religion can influence good ppl as well so its 50/50. I'm atheist and don't believe in that stuff, I know ppl who took advantage of Christianity and used it as an excuse to do terrible things and be manipulative. Therefore NO.

I think shinkodachi is right. There are any number of reasons for people to be nice. It could be the way they were raised, their personality etc. Or it could be that your friend is mistaking politeness for kindness. Rather than religious people being nice because they're religious, it probably has more to do with the effort they put into living up to the precepts of their faith. A lot of religions put a lot of stock in the value of being kind and generous to people.

Some of the nicest people I've met are Buddhist and Mormons. Some of the worst bigots I've met are Christians.

Some religions tend to attract "nice" people but even the nicest religious people can be bigots and not realize how judgmental and xenophobic they actually are.

To be fair, Sabrina the Teenage Witch was an awful show and they probably deserved it.

nicer than what? non-christians? that would not be a fair question as human decency has nothing to do with Christianity. You could say all "true" Christians, those who have accepeted Jesus as their personal savior, have confessed their sins, and asked for forgiveness (the only 3 things u need to enter the kngdom of heaven), compared to satonists...then an obvious yes. But to just say nicer and then have no qualifier is misleading.

but i digress...so i would say yes, that Christians who try to live a good life are generally nicer than people who don;t try to live a righteous life. Being a Christian does not guarantee niceness just like being a Muslim does not guarantee you'll be going to wherever Muslims go. U honestly think Osama bin Laden is anywhere other than the eternal lake of fire??

Depends on personality rather than religion/belief.

I have met and talked with people that were Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, protestants, Catholics, hedonists, Marxists etc.

They were pretty nice people the short while i interacted with them.
In that sense it may not matter that much what religion you decide to entertain yourself with.
