I look at the reviews for a lot of Anime of the wrapped up Spring season and I gotta say that it seems that some people are too unwilling to be critical of the season. I rated 4 of the previous season shows (I tuned into 8 on here, that is half of the shows) with 3 stars or less. I feel like too many people are just stabbing high ratings just because they are satisfied enough. Edit: Nothing wrong with putting a high rating on something you were satisfied with. But, it makes people think that the show you rated high just because you though it was "good enough" may make people believe that it is epic. I also recommend that if you have the time, to not just rate shows but also make a short but informative review.

But, I guess everyone works by their own merits, I only give 5 stars to shows that I absolutely enjoy so much that I'm willing to go out of my way to own it or products about it. Otherwise I'll give it a 4 for being great and something I'd recommend, 3 for a show that is alright and I could see others enjoying but nothing that I'd really be itching to tell people about, 2 for a mediocre show that I didn't drop for some reason, and 1 for a show that I despise or dropped before completion.

So how about you? How tough are ya (or maybe I'm being to difficult)?

If something managed to keep my attention for an entire season it's going to be a 4 or 5. I rarely give 1-3 stars for anything, because if I'm not interested in a show, I just read about the ending, or watch the last episode just to find out what happens.

But I either LOVE a show or am OBSESSED with it. So typically I mainly give 5s. Since it's hard to keep my interest it really isn't fair for me to rate other shows I never watched all of.

But I do like your rating system. I may try that for Netflix because rating only 4 and 5s is irritating with reccomendations.

I'm probably not too hard; while I would give 3 stars to an average show, I try to watch the shows I think are above average. Thus, I probably will skew high. Then again, it's a flaw I see with the 1-5 rating system; let me go from 0-100, and watch me kill averages. And don't get me started on gaming reviews...

I'm a pretty tough critic, there is nothing I hate more than a anime that has potential but just kills it by trying to be unique and failing terribly.

Definitely not a tough critic. ^____^
if i find an anime bland/not of my taste, then maybe it's just not for me, not because it's ugly or anything.
Though, that's a rare occasion.
I don't expect a lot, i avoid spoiling myself [i once did with Clannad~ boy, that was horrible ], and that sure helped me in having a wonderful experience. So, i definitely enjoyed most of my watched Anime Series/Movies/Ovas.
i also watch anime depending on my mood. and i give second [if im fortunate enough, more] chances to series that aren't interesting or attention grabbing right from the pilot ep. ~ Because some series may start slow, build the plot, and end-up as an awesome watch.

I think it's more along the lines of people not writing reviews for the shows they don't like. I think the drive to tell people "Watch this show, it's great/awesome/excellent." is more profound than "Don't watch this show, it's boring/waste of time/horrible." A person puts more effort in things they enjoy rather than things they don't.

meh, if I critique I only go "PSH, IT'S FUNNY. WATCH IT" XD

as long as it amuses me, it's good. :)))

I fluctuate between both extremes. When I first start watching an anime I'm very positive and forgiving, but after maybe 8-10 episodes I tend nitpick a lot and get very critical.
Usually I only give positive ratings to a show, because if I'm feeling negative about the anime I just stop watching.

I am not a tough critic. I tend to rate things that I liked high, and I tend to like a lot of things. That said, similar to Maiden_aya, I don't like to give ratings to things that I haven't watched enough of, and if I don't like it enough to rate it at least a 3 out of 5, (or 6 of 10, as most of my rating is at MAL) I am unlikely to watch all of it. I have only rarely rated shows that I didn't finish if I didn't finish them for a particular reason or if they really offended me. (Though I believe that there are a couple of shows I have rated 7 or so that I haven't finished. I liked them well enough, just ran out of time to watch them and haven't gotten back to it with three or four episodes left.)

I also think you should put in a review on things that you rate, especially if you are giving a low rating.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to anime. I'll point out every single thing that irked me when I write reviews, and I often go into shows with more of a positive bias, which usually changes by the end of the first episode. I'll nitpick on anything major enough to irk me.

I dislike the reviews on crunchyroll LOL the ones on myanimelist are a lot more honest and detailed
I love writing reviews but if I do get critical, everyone hates it. It's like I have to love the show for cr users to approve or something.

But anyways, I am a tough critic.

oh you want me to be as honest as I can be??? Fair enough even I can pull that off....
most new anime for summer 2012 is shit and I would rather waste my time re-watching old movies from the 80's and 90's then this hollow crap.

If I like it, I like it.
I'm not going to nitpick at things I didn't like because you're never gonna like everything from an anime.
Plus, I'm not a 'professional' reviewer or anything, so why would I pretend to be one?
