Americans Portrayed In Anime
|
Just thought it was funny while reading some manga/ watching some anime with American characters.
They're portrayed as one or more of the following: 1. They kiss mouth to mouth or to cheek as if it's nothing (casual kiss) 2. They all have blonde hair and blue eyes. 3. They are all loud or obnoxious 4. They are messy 5. They are exhibitionists (they don't care about being seen naked or what-not) 6. They all have guns and they all know how to use one. I think the first one is particularly interesting, as I thought it was the Europeans who are usually stereotyped as "casual kissers" (like the one cheek kiss). And even if Europeans do kiss as a greeting, they never do it lips to lips (at least, not to my knowledge). But it is always the Americans in anime who kiss one another as if it's nothing. I know I don't kiss people as a greeting (unless they're family or boyfriend). And I'm pretty sure the fact that I'm Asian does not really effect this much, as most of my fellow American friends don't go up to their other friends and kiss each other. Any other ways Americans are portrayed in anime? |

![]() Kyoka Kanejo from B Gata H Kei: Yamada's First Time is actually an exception to most your portrayals listed. She can probably be considered obnoxious... probably. This is why I like her though, since she is an exception to the usual American portrayals in Anime. |

Time to start Catch Up on some shows!

You hit the nail on the coffin...I always wondered about that too. It's the spoiled, rich, perverted white girl or guy blonde hair and blue eye's.
though there are some Americans like that....there are people like that everywhere and one thing is for sure. when it comes to open affection or kissing like it is a hand shake....that will be Europe not America. This is what happens when you show too much affection to a random American. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cBRfjcY9SQ |

Hey that's pretty refreshing! marcel20 wrote: You hit the nail on the coffin...I always wondered about that too. It's just a kiss! I kiss people as a greeting all the time in America!" I read this a long long time ago but this quote still stuck because I was like, "No, I do not do this all the time in America..." Although because this character is Japanese American, she does not have the added deficits of being American: the loud obnoxious ignorance. |

I remember seeing an anime with an American character who is ALWAYS threatening to sue lol. The rest of the cast ended up characterizing her as a "tsundere".

MI ZU SA WA! MI ZU SA WA! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!

In most cases they probably lump Americans and Europeans together... Which would explain the kissing thing. We do the same to Asians in our media. Stereotypes be stereotypes.
Don't forget that we all love hamburgers! |

Charlotte Yeager in Strike Witches, overly large breasts, loud, brash, and walks around in her undies. Gotta love her.

this is not an anime but i recommend y'all to watch My Darling is a Foreigner. I was expecting some stupid portrayal about us being bad lovers or something but it turned out to be a heartwarming, rather accurate portrayal of how a relationship with an american and a japanese person could have its ups and downs with their cultural differences. especially being married to a japanese man a few of the concepts hit close to home! GO WATCH IT!

Any other ways Americans are portrayed in anime? Well, I'll say this much. No, no, not always, yes, no, and somewhat. Yeah, it's very stereotypical, but so are we with Asians. Besides, I find it funny to laugh at them, even if they are somewhat silly. |
