Americans Portrayed In Anime

I'm not sure if they specifically said she was American. I thought she was. Some sites say she might be Russian. The character is Kaere Kimura. http://myanimelist.net/character/3768/Kaere_Kimura |

Excel Saga has a episode where Excel and Hyatt go to America.... where everything is drawn in a more Western (Americanized) style.... and also the Americans just splurt out random cuss words, ooo's and ahh's, and the occasional JESUS! most of the time.

I get the feeling that they portray Americans as more flamboyant and eccentric in comparison to their own. In some anime, they are almost exotic. I think they really loop together Americans and Europeans too much! They kind of combine both western worlds into one homogeneous foreign entity.

I guess she could pass as Russian, though nothing she's ever done really implies it (or may be it's gone over my head). Meh whatever, I still think she's still probably the funniest girl on Sayonoara Zetsbou Sensei. |

I always found it hilarious that "Americans" were always voiced by VA's with heavily accented English... or even Engrish.
But the OPs points are pretty much how most Japanese folk view Americans, except for the casual kissing bit. I see more Japanese guys in shoujo stuff that are casual kissers than I do "Americans". |

I find it funny, like other posters said cultural mistakes abound in every part of the world. I love Hetalia, it equally disgraces each culture with stereotypes.

I absolutely hate how Asians (in anime and online) seem to think that America is only white-people land.
It's a MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY. England as well. |

Where do Japanese people get the idea that all Americans are blond, blue-eyed, and white? We encompass all ethnic groups and phenotypes! (Thankfully, Rei Hiroe averted this in Black Lagoon--Revy's at least 2nd or 3rd-generation Chinese-American, Benny's a white Ashkenazi Jew, Dutch is black.) Granted, Japan isn't a country based on immigration, but they could at least ditch the whole phenotype stereotype in more anime and manga! (Then again, I can't tell different Asian peoples apart without hearing their languages or looking at their surnames. Same goes for other white people. Anyone who isn't black looks alike to me.) For that matter, where the hell do they get the idea that we kiss as a greeting? I'm American and we don't do that! French people? Maybe, and even that's originally a Lebanese thing (As France and Lebanon used to be all buddy-buddy in the olden days). |
