I didn't realise my parents getting older meant I would have to take care of them, and I never realised it would happen so soon.

-You dont know everything about the world at 18, learning (and maturing) is a lifelong process.
-No sense in worrying about or trying to maintain a relationship when the other person doesnt care either.
-You cant please everyone, some people will never be satisfied.
-Sometimes your parents are indeed right.
-You need to be content with the path you've chosen or you'll never be happy.
-Appreciate the people that are always genuine and truly care for you. One day they may be gone and the regret of things you didnt say or will never have the chance to will haunt you.

I didn't know what a "role-model" was until ninth grade (~age 14) or that I was supposed to have one.

Didn't know what a "latch-key kid" was until I wasn't one anymore.

Couldn't tell you the difference between a congressman and a senator til I was in college (the third time around).

That math is actually easier to understand the older you are because of the different neuropathways you develop.

That the best teachers admit when they don't know something.

Didn't know Minnesotans had an accent until I watched Fargo (which by the way, the bar in the first shot of that film, "King of Clubs," was actually located a block from my friend's house in nordeast Minneapolis, not Fargo as the caption shows).

I understand the jokes in movies that whizzed over my head when I was a kid. That's always fun. Watching some favorite movie from childhood and suddenly catching a joke that makes your jaw drop to wonder why your parents would let you watch something like that and how you never noticed it before. One way of putting a new spin on an old favorite.

Growing up can be over-rated.
I've learned that pretty much everything anyone told me about becoming an adult is actually true, and most people younger than me don't believe me when I say it.

I've also learned that you are never too old to change your mind about what you want to do with the rest of your life.

I didn't know that when you speak to someone they react consciously to what you say on an intellectual level -- but also they react on an unconscious emotional level based on if they liked the way you looked and sounded when you said it.

So, really, every single time you talk to someone, whether they know it or not, they're judging you based on external factors that have nothing to do with the topic at hand and a lot more to do with how friendly the tone of your voice is and how nice your shoes are, how good your hair looks, how white your teeth are, etc, etc.

And that lastly, individuals will forget the words you used, their meaning and the entire point of what you attempted to communicate. But they will always remember how they felt when you spoke to them. This is the key point. Outside of a lecture hall, verbal communication is almost completely useless -- tone and image are everything.

I have plenty of these types of revelations, but I forget what my old way of thinking was very quickly. So I can't really tell when I've had one about a week later, most of the time.

I've learned recently that people take life so seriously that they will forsake all happiness to achieve their "goals". This seems to apply to a vast array of subjects and situations, and it doesn't discriminate against age, gender, or status.

It all links back to people stubbornly believing that they know anything in life with certainty. Even what will make them happy in life. Because that's not technically possible, and because they're being stubborn and rigid, the vast majority of people I see set themselves up for failures they're going to look back at with 20/20 hindsight, years later, while pissing and moaning about how life is unfair.

I didn't know what it meant to actually cherish someone and not NEED/USE them for logical reasons until last year. I was a bit of a jackass.
