I recently went to an (IRL) anime meetup, and met some folks that literally never watched any anime since DBZ and/or since the 1990s (which someone called the golden years of anime).

I don't get it, why not watch any current anime. I don't really think the only liking one or two series from the 1990s really constitutes as being an anime fan, right?

Opinions?

There's no set law as to what constitutes an anime fan.

i think they could still be considered fans, but they have really been missing out if they havent been paying attention for the last decade. they missed out on a boat load of great series and movies~

I just find it really weird that someone would consider themselves a hardcore anime fan, but absolutely refuses to watch any anime that has been released since 2001-2002.

To me, there is always amazing new anime coming out.. although Summer 2012 is starting to prove that wrong.

It all depends on your definition of "hardcore anime fan". Again, there is no strict defined meaning of the term. They may be hardcore in their own accord; they may not be in yours.

Some people don't like change, so if the animation style changes or the genre they like isn't being done anymore they fall into "things aren't like they used to be". *shrug* It's a shame that they want to limit themselves that way, but that's their choice.

I think you are wrong, but that's my opinion. ;)

I didn't say it was terrible, and I did use an 'lol' at the end. It's still too new of a season to pass judgement, and there are still plenty of shows this season, which I have yet to find the time to start watching.

Each to their own. Some people have legit reasons for disliking or not watching older anime, that doesn't make them any less of 'fans'.

I haven't run into anyone who flat out refuses to watch anime; rather, they may like it but just haven't sought any out since the '90s. If you begin watching anime on tv then once the series is over you don't really know how to find a new one or don't really feel like going through the effort of finding a new one. Well, if you're older that is. We didn't know to look on the internet if there was even an internet. lol My brother, who is older than I am, loved DBZ and bought the dvds and watched all the movies. He has watched other stuff since then but not enough to be considered by some to be an anime fan. I think if he ran across something similar he'd watch it. He just doesn't actively seek it out. He watches more American animations like Justice League b/c he has easier access to it and he's more familiar with it. These types of people may be fans of certain types of shows rather than of the anime genre. So unless something compares to what they watched before then they may not have anything to do with it. My tastes are a little more varied so I can see how I managed to not be a part of that group even though we had the same beginnings.

Well i guess Its fine with me i mean like if they actually watch/ watched anime from the 1990s besides the mainstream ones like DBZ. but what really gets me is people who say that they're hardcore anime fans just for the attention or the classification from others:/ i see that alot, people saying that they are hardcore anime fans so their friends would look at them as such and have only watched something mainstream like bleach or naruto or only have watche 2 or 3 anime and make no attempted to watch anymore. thats not something i would call hardcore:/

LOL!!!! Bleach. sorry, but...

I guess it's kinda hardcore if you survived all of those god damn horrible fillers.

I'm sort of like that. I can tell you about older shows/series but the more recent stuff I'm FAR behind on.
