nah. Anime won't die unless crunchyroll and funimation destroy piracy without supplying the void that would require filling. We're far too passionate a fanbase to just die.

I think it's funny that you're even taking a 13 year old kid seriously. Why in the world would anyone believe him?

I can't believe this topic is still going...

Well, I kinda can... :-/

The downfall of anime, and the ten year time period that it is supposed to happen has been around for a LONG time.

Whereas this leads me to doubt that it will ever actually happen, there's a lot of things that can lead to it's slow rotting degradation.

1. The internet and piracy is rampant. This affects all audiovisual media. But, unlike music, which has rebounded and stabilized due to legal downloads, there's no "killer app" that is doing this for movies and TV shows like iTunes and the iPod did. It's possible and would totally make its fortunes if there was, but what exists now is burdened down by high prices for content, (three bucks for a movie off of amazon is dirt cheap, but it still breaks the 99 cent barrier), no "exclusive" file format needed to play the files, and no sleek droolworthy device for it to operate from.

2. The quality of anime is going to crap. Too many cookie cutter shows and not enough quality. The newer model is all about profits, and about developing based on past successes (to ensure future success they think) and shorter seasons (to curb the investment). This is also not endemic to anime alone. Video games in particular are suffering from the same lack of creativity, minus the fact that there's plenty of options for tiny games and small startups to have a place in the market. (not so with anime as far as I can tell).

3. Japan is a dying country. Birth rates down, low immigration, etc. If you believe that anime is anime because it's japanese, there's no fighting against the fact that the island is becoming less and less inhabited. And, even if you have a massive flux of immigration, you'll also be importing other cultures, not boosting the culture of japan already has... which leads me to...

4. The world is still becoming more "American". Haven't you noticed that there's less and less stuff in anime that's specific to the culture? We used to joke about rice balls that were translated into "sandwiches" in the dialog, but honestly, now, "sandwiches" are becoming more often than not, sandwiches. There's more burger joints and Mc.Donalds in our anime. Obligatory beach episode? sure. Wearing typical bathing suits. Local festival episodes? Not nearly as common anymore... And this westernization, might also be playing into...

5. the lowering age demographic for anime. People are constantly bitching about things being censored, that the laws are changing to make things more kid friendly, the people watching identify more with high school students than adults, etc.. It's just happening.

All in all, I think anime will eventually be distilled down to animation no different from american animation. It won't disappear, but it'll never be the same.
