yeah, you literally have to look up wtf just happened. I wouldn't be suprised if people just quit after episode on. and to make matters more confusing, the trailer was nothing but scenes from the first episode.

Well for me the first episode is what hooked me at first I thought "hmm generic action anime, eh good enough" but by the end I was hooked and finished the whole series in a day.

Nothing hooks me quite like a false start. So far there hasn't been a anime with a false start thats disappointed me.

Well like the OP, Puella Magi Madoka Magika, (I personally stopped watching School Days when I started to hate the male lead, interesting ending though).

My addition to this list has to be Kemono no Souja Erin. Until episode 6, there were only hints at the heavy political nature of the series. Though not as sudden as with Mami in Madoka Magika, the turn of events and emotions over episodes 6-8 that kick into gear the actual developing pace the series intends to take to the end, are very different from the innocent starting pace that ran through mostly 5 whole episodes.

I watched Yosuga No Sora episode 1 and liked it, I thought it might be the best anime of Winter 2010...up until the moment that thing after the credits happened, and I refuse to watch any more of it ever.
