I hold a distinction between B/G and Horror, so I really couldn't say.

If you consider something as young as Gantz to be "old school" then you must be thinking of the reboot of FotNS. You want blood & gore, pick any seinen title from the 80s.

There's Blade of the Immortal, but I wouldn't call it one of the best series overall - if you want a story. But it's got gores aplenty.

(Glances at previous comments) Maybe just look for series with immortal characters. You can spray lots of their blood around when they can come back to life anyways.

(I wouldn't call Shiki gory, except for the end.)
