Best one I have seen. The majority of people I have asked seem to agree.

I watched it in its entirety and quite liked it. I never did see the Beijing opening ceremonies, but with a population of well over a billion and a budget of over $100 million USD, its not even a fair comparison. They basically just handed Ang Lee a blank check and told him to go buck wild. London had to be much more clever in their approach.
That and this year's Olympics are being held in one of the the U.K. capital’s poorest areas all the while the country is in a recession. London's opening ceremonies' ratings surpassed Beijing's by the way. Seems money can't buy enthusiasm. |

I loved the torch. I think it was very artistically done, very inspired.

Go on forums or something else and you'll get people telling you what they ACTUALLY thought. I have family and friends in England as well, and they didn't like it either for example. |

Forums don't make up the majority though, and what "something else" are you referring to so I can check for myself? |

Check on the internet, in different places (school, work...) check with unbiased people from your own country. You'll see for yourself. |

I know a lot of people from US/CA/Asia/Europe who agree, I can't speak for the majority of the 1billion people who watched it but neither can you. All I can judge it from is what I have seen, which is a positive reaction to it. |

Interesting juxtaposition with the LOTR movies... It didn't initially cross my mind, but the resemblance is a bit uncanny! The resemblance may not have been intentional, but no doubt the themes were similar (pastoral vs. industrial).
Anyway, I thought it wasn't a bad show at all. Maybe not spectacular, but I enjoyed it well enough. Obviously very British-centric (e.g. with the NHS), but what would you expect? Of course the host country will attemp to showcase itself to the rest of the world. I would have been admittedly amused and even pleased if Hatsune Miku had sang, but knew there was absolutely no way it was going to happen. I do recall the Beijing ceremony being very impressive, but now, 4 years later, that's really all I remember of it-- that it was "impressive" and probably very expensive to produce. In my opinion, it's just as well London didn't go too overboard in spending on this thing. |
