Well, technically I saw a CLIP of FMA: Brotherhood when I was about, urehm, eight or nine on my parents TV.

The first anime I ever actually WATCHED was Keroro Gunsou, more well known as Sgt. Frog. What ca I say? This show more formally introduced me to the industry, and for that and it's balls out insane humor, I applaud it.

I would've said Avatar: The Last Airbender, but that's technically not an anime, and I have heard about DBZ and Naruto and Bleach when I was younger, but I never actually watched them.......whoops.

I watched Voltron, Star Blazers, and Robotech on TV before I knew that they were anime.

The first show that I watched knowing it was anime was a little-known series called Zillion; in particular, the Burning Night OAV that actually happened after the TV series. After that was Akira. Both were on something we called VHS tapes.

I consider the first anime I watched to be the first season of Pokemon, which my mother got for me on VHS when I was out sick for a week from kindergarten. God, that must have been 14 years ago.

I think for me, the earliest I can remember was either part of an episode of Tekkaman Blade, and maybe an episode of Robotech. I think I saw part of an episode of Dragon Ball (not DBZ) somewhere as well. However, the first anime I really remember watching, and having a partial understanding of what I was watching, was Akira on the Sci-Channel Festival of Anime, in the mid 90's. I remember getting up every Saturday morning to watch Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi as well. The Sci-Fi Channel Anime line ups were what got me hooked on anime. They played movies such as Akira, Lensman, E.Y.E.S of Mars, Record of Lodoss War, Robot Carnival, Roujin Z, Lily Cat (which I cannot find on DVD anywhere), Dominion Tank Police, and many more. I wish I still had my VHS copy of the Streamline Pictures dub of Akira. It was sub-par and inaccurate, but I really miss it. Nostalgia I guess.

This was in the mid 90's when Anime first started infiltrating mainstream culture in America, and started becoming popular. This was way before Yugioh, DBZ, Pokemon, etc. This was a time when anime was super difficult to come by, dubs were horrible, companies like Streamline Pictures, Pioneer, Manga Entertainment, and ADV were putting out really good classic anime. All was on VHS, and if you wanted to see more than the 20-30 titles available between the mentioned companies, bootleg Japanese VHS tapes were around, usually in comic shops. Anime was so hard to come by, and so special, that is was magical every time you go to see one. It wasn't like today, where it is so regularly available, and not as big of a deal. It may sound like it wasn't that great, but it really was an awesome time to grow up, and I would love to feel that excitement again, that I got when I got to watch a new anime. That was the best time for anime in America, in my opinion. Those that did not grow up during this time really missed out. The anime of today feels like it lacks the substance that anime had in the 80's and 90's. I feel like today's anime is just not as good.

Look at my post and tell me if you remember what I am talking about. That really was the time for Anime wasn't it? Most of us are now nearing 30, or are in our 30's, lol. Do you remember how expensive those VHS tapes were? Remember that a bit later, you had the option of either the English Dub VHS, or the Japanese language version with subtitles VHS; not both? It wasn't like DVD's and Blu-ray's today, that have both!
