I can understand the frustration that we are basically the beta testers for the ps3 app, but if you read thru the forum you will see it's a combination of CR trying to gather info on the bugs, fixing the bugs, then submitting the patches to Sony, whom then needs to approve them. There is a saying about too many cooks in the kitchen, but in CR's defense... Sony owns the kitchen so...whadda going to do?

Well, Crunchyroll could instead put together a high-quality app that is thoroughly tested prior to release, like other video streaming companies do for their PS3 apps or other devices. All this app tells me is that Crunchyroll cannot execute well and/or doesn't have people skilled enough for the work required. A few edge cases that weren't covered, okay. But basic playback should be rock solid for at least 99% of users or you're doing it wrong.

While I think CR should have done an invite-only limited public beta before going public, I also think they shouldn't be held to the same standards as a behemoth like Netflix or a heavyweight like Hulu Plus. There is a considerable difference in the number of subscribers and resources, even when comparing CR to the latter, much less the former.

Apparently, even having more money and people to throw at the problem doesn't always make for perfection. I'm about half way through a 2 month free trial of Hulu Plus, and frankly their Roku app needs some work. It is slow to respond when I fast forward or rewind, and there have been times where it would have been more time efficient to just watch the OP I wanted to skip because it takes so long to respond. There have also been a few incidents where it forced me to power cycle my Roku. Keep in mind this is an app that will be 2 years old in November, and in the most recent report I could find, has 1.5 million paid subscribers funding it. (By contrast, the last known number for CR was close to 70,000 paid subscribers at the close of November 2011, that per TV Tokyo).

If perhaps you can point to another video streaming service on the PS3 that has a similar number of subscribers and doesn't have the backing of a large corporation (like Sony's Crackle), your complaint might carry more weight.

Frankly, it will be interesting to see how Viz's Neon Alley service fares when it comes out next month.

Given that it is a linear channel, not on demand, the technical aspects are rather different. For example, apparently some of CR's problems on the PS3 are fixable with encoding changes, but re-encoding the library takes time. With a linear channel, Viz would only need to worry about re-encoding the upcoming material about to be streamed.

I did mention comparing the Crunchyroll PS3 app to other PS3 apps in my earlier post, but the weight of my complaint doesn't matter as much as the cost Crunchyroll is experiencing as a result of the experience/opinion described in my complaint and the complaints of others. If Crunchyroll wants to increase their membership count and premium subscriber base then they need to provide high-quality service. That equally applies to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.

Going with a limited public beta would fall under the category of better execution. So would releasing a final product that didn't have such a high percentage of poor responses. (PSN says ~2000 downloads, and there seem to be a lot of complaints on this thread proportionate to that number.)

Your words seem to indicate you're giving Crunchyroll a break because they're a small company. That's your prerogative but I don't have to do the same. I really want the content and service Crunchyroll is providing, but in its current form it isn't good enough for me. (I've watched one season on my computer, and a handful of episodes on my iPad over the course of several months.) I have high expectations and I want Crunchyroll to know that.

A for effort. Not using it until 720/1080p is available. LQ makes me gag on the big screen.

This is the only problem i have. Not stopping me from using the app now, I'm always on the ps3 now instead of the pc. Hope this gets fixed in the coming weeks.

Please fix the video lag, the app crashing, and the app freezing up my PS3 and then we'll talk about a premium membership.

I'm hoping to see at least 720p eventually too. However, the bigger concern is that the video lags even in the low quality that the app currently shows. I'm wondering if 720p let alone 1080p will happen anytime soon.

I'm giving CR the benefit of the doubt since it's still early, but it's a bit disappointing that I can't watch a series without the video lagging. This means I won't even try to use the app until the problem is fixed. Laggy anime is pretty much unwatchable especially during action scenes.

They have put themselves on record for HD coming by the end of the year, but that still gives them 3.5 months.

That's irrelevant to me. They are competing on the same platform as those products but offer a vastly inferior experience. An experience that is literally broken and unusable unless you want to miss chunks of an episode.

There's no excuse for it. Is there anyone who is getting smooth playback for an entire episode? There's a glitch that's affecting nearly 100% of users. How does something like that slip through the cracks. Regardless of how big or small a company is, that shouldn't happen and they shouldn't get a pass for releasing a crap product just because they are small.

I think they would have been better off waiting to release the app when they could have fixed all of the major bugs rather than releasing such a janky version. The press would have covered the app whenever it came out but at least they wouldn't have new PS3 users trying out the service and getting a terrible experience compared to every other video streaming option on the PS3.
