I'm hoping to see at least 720p eventually too. However, the bigger concern is that the video lags even in the low quality that the app currently shows. I'm wondering if 720p let alone 1080p will happen anytime soon.

They have put themselves on record for HD coming by the end of the year, but that still gives them 3.5 months.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll be looking forward to it.

one thing i noticed between ps3 and these two other streaming devices i own

my Roku box streams CR with ZERO issues and its in HD
my Western Digital Live streams CR with ZERO issues and its also in HD 720P, my tv doesnt support 1080p

i truly CR can do the same on the PS3 platform, maybe they didnt expect this challenge from the start, who knows. at least they made some effort with the patch issued last week. we still have a ways to go, but if they can achieve greatness on smaller streaming platforms i dont see why they cant duplicate the success on the ps3

Oh man this app is so perfect if it wasn't for the stuttering, but then again my roku streams perfectly with Crunchyroll there was one time when it didn't a year and a half ago but Crunchyroll fixed it, they will improve it heck make the ps3 app better than it is now, I have faith in them, they have a lot of good karma stocked up with me.

I was under the impression there was no HD on the other CE devices either. At least, that's the answer I got when I wrote to Crunchyroll customer service. Maybe you have the devices set to output 720p so the content is being upscaled but the original media is still SD?

CR doesn't provide HD streams for either of those devices. Don't confuse the output of the device with the stream resolution.

If you need further proof, consider this:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2012/otakon/2

Kawamura moved into the Q&A session with a question about HD support on the Roku streaming device. Kawamura says that he doesn't have a timetable for it yet but he's hoping that will happen within the next year.

As the article states, Keith Kawamura is the Senior Brand Manager for Crunchyroll.

If for some reason you think he would be so clueless about the company he represents as to claim something was coming that they already had, then I can find some posts from the more technically involved CR staff here that have confirmed these devices have no HD streams. (The Roku, WD Live, and Vizio apps all share the same streams, which is why they are lumped together in the same topic in the Help/Support/Feedback section).

Finally, if you understand what those dots to the right of "quality" when "retrieving" appears on the Roku screen represent, you would have had a good clue all along that the Roku streams were not in HD. (They correspond to the bitrate of the video stream).

boy complaints on this thread make me seem tame by comparison. Here ya go.

Most video related issues can be resolved without an update to the app. There is 1 issue which likely can be resolved by changing how we serve the videos and fixing all the videos should not take more than a month from the point that the fix finalized and deployed. But some issues would require all videos to be re-encoded which can take a few months from the point we start re-encoding everything. Though, when this happens, the latest episodes will instantly use the new encodes while the older videos will slowly be fixed.

So it'll be a few more months before I can use it without skipping - big deal. The video navigation is wonderful and it has all the series up. It looks fine in 480p to me although that could be because I have a smaller HD tv than most. Not only that but they said they were going to stream it in 1080p later this year.

I mean ... a CR anime yearly membership is a little more expensive than owning a new game for the PS3 and it provides anime for THE WHOLE YEAR. Owning the series that I have watched on here would cost me about 10X that if it's even available to buy.
They fixed the audio/video sync problems in under 2 weeks. Just give it some time. Not every app that comes out is perfect right out the gate.

I think that is what is happening

That's irrelevant to me. They are competing on the same platform as those products but offer a vastly inferior experience. An experience that is literally broken and unusable unless you want to miss chunks of an episode.

People seem to give the impression that Hulu Plus and Netflix on the PS3 were perfect out of the gate. I don't know about Netflix, but that certainly doesn't seem to be the case with the PS3:
http://www.hulu.com/discussions/10
Check the thread "Hulu and the PS3 - Will it ever be fixed?" (currently 65 posts and 5064 views).

Take note that even with the reports of problems here, CR still has people pushing for releases in other countries and HD video. I doubt they could have conducted a proper limited beta without people hounding them with "When will it be released for all of us?" questions. You certainly didn't see people saying, "Take your time, I'll wait, just make certain it is good".

My recommendation to anyone displeased with the app: Don't use it until you see reports of it working well. You'll be no worse off than if CR had taken longer to release it in the first place.

Those aren't perfect for everyone but they at least are functional for the masses. Is there anyone not having lagging or subtitle dropping issues with the CR app?

why don't you buy a japanese console to watch japanese shows...

I own both Xbox and PS3, and the Xbox has better functionality. And why would you need a Japanese console to watch anime? That's awfully narrow-minded of you...
