PS3 vs. other game systems (aka "did I make the wrong choice?")

Hi,

(Quick disclaimer: this isn't really a question, just random mumbling... Please be my guest and contribute to the mumbling!)

The new Crunchyroll PS3 app got me thinking as I have a PS3 myself, that it's great how gaming consoles have so much functionality nowadays, but isn't that just distracting us gamers from what matters most in gaming, i.e. the games themselves?!

E.g. I have Sonic Generations on my PS3 and it's a lovely game, but I'm already nearing completion after just a few weeks of casual play here and there. What am I supposed to do when I'm done with it? I checked out other Sonic games, but the PS3 lacks some cool titles, which the Wii has. The Wii also has had cool games like Okami and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus for a while, I know they're coming to the PS3 "sometime", but if I had a Wii I could be playing those games *now* and maybe pick up Sonic Colors along the way...

Yes, I love DLNA / Wi-Fi media sharing on my PS3, I love the looks of it (the Wii looks like a Fisher Price toy...) and I love the concept, but when I look at the Wii or even Xbox 360, there are just so many more games for those systems which I'd probably enjoy, especially the XBLA section on the Xbox 360... But instead, I let HD and free network play mislead me to buy the PS3, which I have had for about a month now.

I didn't get into console gaming until now because it's always been difficult for me to chose one over another... Prior to the PS3 I had a GameCube (launch day Super Mario Sunshine bundle!), absolutely loved it and didn't care about the PS2 or Xbox at the time, simply because it had everything I wanted without compromises. But it broke down many years ago and I didn't have the time or money to buy another system and new games, and the Nintendo "Revolution" (aka Wii) was rumored to be just around the corner...

...but when I saw the Wii, I was disappointed. Basically a GameCube with wireless motion control, nothing cool about it... And when I look at the upcoming Wii U now, I'm just thinking: "Nintendo, what went wrong?" I used to be a fan of the Big N, even have some Nintendo POWER magazine issues from the 90s to prove it! But I can't stay with Big N if all they do is recycle old hardware and make Fisher Price toys. :(

So, I don't even know what I'm asking here, but I guess what I'm trying to say is: are there others at CR who feel the same? As in, none of the current consoles feel "right" like the last generation. I just want to be able to buy a console, any console, and buy the games I like for it and enjoy gaming. I don't want gaming to become a complex subject that distracts you from the art itself that are the games as they once used to be.

There's one country between Germany and mine.

....I feel that it would get expensive...

9.99usd for Xbox live membership, then membership for CR...

On a side note...
I prefer the Xbox360 for its selection of games.
The PS3 serves as my media entertainment.-with its awesome blu-ray and crunchyroll app

Well, I use Steam mostly, so I would just open another window for crunchyroll and use the actual website. No need a console in the first place.

I used to have a 360 but I sold it.. I went to steam for most my gaming, along with the wii a bit for the titles. Xbox - ps3 - steam pretty much all have the same major titles. Nintendo has a lot of exclusives.

There are a few ps3 exclusive titles I want to play, mostly atlus games. I'll get one eventually but I'm in no hurry.

Well I bought all 3... I sold the crappy Wii, and the PS3 is just a Blu-ray player now. Xbox 360 wins by a landslide.

c: My solution is to buy ALL the consoles and handhelds your money allows, hehehe. Each has its strong points and its weak points. For example...

The Wii has interesting controls, wonderful first party games, and some really unique budget-price releases. It's also really easy to mod so you can get rid of that pesky region lock and play games from other countries! ^^ Unfortunately, it has the lowest volume of releases, and quite a bit of cheaply-made titles to wade through and find the real gems. Also, the online isn't so good.

The Xbox is wonderful if you're a shooter fan and has the best online, but it's also got the most expensive online, and is harder to mod if you enjoy imports.

The PS3 has decent, but free, online, and is awesome if you love RPGs. Unfortunately, it has to system update a LOT, and it seems to disconnect often? [for me at least.] Also, yay Blu-Ray! Yay, no region lock!

Then when you add in handhelds and the PC, there's just so many options! My solution is to find the games and the genres that REALLY appeal to you, wait it out for a bit to see what systems will have the most new releases to look forwards to, and always be on the look out for a hidden treasure. Doesn't matter if it's a budget release, a tiny indie game, some PC freeware, or a new, popular game in a genre you've yet to try, I think ALL systems can be "the best" or "the right choice," if you will. Something for everyone, that's the way to go!
