I am a Christian, don't consider myself religious but rather spiritual. Why? No words can really help me to explain why.

hehe i can help you there religion generally implies a set of rituals. which is not necessitated ever since jesus died.is why some pastors i listen to say jesus was anti religious (pharisee's and their set of dogma's and ritual etc which were not exactly biblical. sorta makes me think of the catholic church.)

If you came to religion through your parents, it's because they brainwashed you at an early age.

If you come to religion late in life, it's because you're afraid of death and lost loved ones.

If you want to expand your mind, absorb real knowledge. If you want to expand your heart, walk out your front door and volunteer to help.

do athiest pray?
like if your mom was dying would you pray that she would get better?
I bet some of you would. And thats kinda like religion its just somthing people do to make them selves feel better.

If people wanna believe in something, be it christian, catholic, buddhism, sikhism, helpism, let them.

Atheist (if you don't wish to read everything read 5.)

1. Religion was just made up by the people of the past, because of their lack of understanding of the world around them, so therefore in order to cope with not being able to understand their surroundings they simply claimed everything they couldn't explain happened, because of some higher being or made up figure.
2. A reason why I think this is a plausible conclusion is that when kids grow up what's the first thing they start doing when they can understand the language around them? They ask questions, duh... so, i believe that adults simply made up religion as a boring side subject to distract their children from their lack of knowledge of the same things there children wanted to know about.
3 . All in all religion is something made in the past in order to prevent children from asking too many questions and so that parents wouldn't have to explain things they themselves didn't understand yet to their kids.
4. So, now it's just something that people of the past have decided to use to their advantage whether it be for starting funding, crusades(basically hate crimes from misunderstanding one another), or now in the present most religions use it for morals and deeper meaning of how one should live his life mentally and morally correct. (B.I.B.L.E. tm the love guru hello, basic instruction before leaving Earth) do you really believe that is a coincidence, i mean come on the U.S. founding fathers were obviously smarter than any president today, i mean to be able to create the bill of rights and the U.S. constitution and have it prevent national collapse (unless you break its laws (e.g. Obama cough cough))
5. Anyways i'm Atheist and religion was made up as an excuse for our kids back in time and then stayed as a guide to how we should live our lives and for funding the churches obviously lol.

wouldn't it be better to just believe in your mother's will to survive and overcome her illness?

Plus if you look at it that way praying to make yourself feel better isn't that just you using an excuse to not have to talk out your emotional problems over the situation by using a false being as your witness (cough cough excuse me a being who you believe to exist, while others do not). Personally i'd rather put my emotions into something real instead of trying to create something that you can only believe to exist, when i could rather just believe in myself or the ability of others.

I'm technically Agnostic, in that I don't think there is a god, but still can't prove that there is no god, but even if god was proven, I would deny him. Anyone who sits by and ignores the hell that people in the worse for wear parts of the world, even though they could fix those places up right away is a BAD person. Not only that, but what kind of person sets up a test where in order to get into heaven, you are judged not on how good of a person you are, but if you believe in an improbable, invisible, intangible being of some other dimension, and throws everyone else, no matter how good those people were, into a lake of fire. Fuck that, I would rather burn that have to sit next to someone as reprehensible as that for eternity.
