"Who are you? So, are you a hacker? An Epitaph User? What are you, an AIDA?!"
— Haseo —

Azure Kite (蒼炎のカイト) is one of the Three Azure Knights. He has also been called Tri-Edge

Appearance

Azure Kite resembles a “lanky” version of the previous protagonist, Kite. Though similar in appearance, his features are very distinct, shown by numerous stitches throughout the clothing, a wider strap over the shoulder, three bands across the neck, slight color alterations, and a unique symbol located on his hat. In addition to his physical structure, Azure Kite also possesses his own version of the Twilight Bracelet, as well as a barrier of flames that appear upon his arrival. Aside from appearing as a ball of light, he also wields a pair of triple edged blades, two other attributes separating him from his counterpart. Matching qualities between the two are certain clothing, class, and the tattoos located on each side of his face

Naming

Azure Kite's name has changed several times during the course of the .hack//G.U. games. Azure Kite is initially referred to in the story as "Tri-Edge", and although inaccurate this name is still sometimes used to refer to him. His PC name defaults to Kite in battle, but will appear as whatever the player named Kite in the .hack games if that data has been imported. In Japanese, the character itself is referred to as Kite of the Azure Flame (蒼炎のカイト) in Japanese, and rendered as Azure Kite in English in the bilingual credits. In the American release of Rebirth, this was rendered in a wallpaper and defaulted in the credits as Azure Flame Kite. In the American releases of the later games, his name is shortened back to Azure Kite

Personality

Silent Azure Flame remains quiet throughout the majority of the series, leaving his voice expressed only through short breaths. Due to the ideal he does not share his thoughts it is questionable how much knowledge he withholds. Regardless he does appear tactical to some matter prepared to attack when endangered, the ability to distinguish targets, and possibly alteration of battle tactics after failed attempts. Like the previous protagonist, he withholds a certain determination, or in most cases a strict focus on key objectives. Aside from his focus, he possesses certain skill with the bracelet, giving him the ability to repair data in the system. Upon receiving him as a party member in the games, it is revealed that he withholds traits similar to the original Kite, as well as his own personal views on the matter, as the rest of the knights. As a bonus, he yells the words “Data Drain” during the ending credits of the games’ marriage parody. In addition, he also replies in corrupted upon receiving an item, as well as responding to gift cards sent to him. Aside from fighting AIDA, he presumably spends time in cyberspace, waiting until prompt into action.

History

.hack//Roots

azure kite in roots

During Roots, Azure Kite appeared prior to the release of the seal on located on Ovan’s left arm. Soon after his disappearance from system administrators, Azure Kite began tracking him. While pursing Ovan, he traveled through the Hulle Granz Cathedral where Shino fell comatose. Arriving the within the aftermath of the situation, he left the cathedral unknowingly watched by Haseo as he departed, whom afterwards took the assumptive that Azure Kite was at fault. Resuming the search he was evaded once more, encountering Phyllo located within an area Ovan had recently passed through. After the incident, he finally encountered Ovan within the Keel Mountains of Briona Gideon where battle between the two ensued; another character, Midori, witnessed this fight. The attempt against Ovan failed and the situation calmed as both seemly vanished. Upon returning to The World, he redirected his attention towards Midori, who also defied system parameters, and stood out as Ovan's trail weakened, fortunately for Midori she escaped. Afterwards Azure Kite reappears in the cathedral where he meets Haseo whom rushes into battle with him. Bordering Haseo’s defeat Ovan arrives within the area redirecting Azure Kite's attention. Utilizing the bracelet’s power, Azure Kite attempts to data drain Ovan however, the attack strikes Haseo, unknowingly portraying a shield. The only known players to witness the event are Ovan and Saburo who watched from afar. He later reappears at alongside Azure Balmung and Azure Orca, preparing yet another for attack on Ovan.

.hack//G.U. Games

azure flame god

The beginning of the game details the battle between Haseo and Azure Kite in the cathedral, sometime after he also presented in a video by Yata, appearing before three players and effectively data draining one, showing his ability to move freely throughout The World, without the use Chaos Gates. Azure Kite appears once more during the end of Rebirth after Haseo and the other locate Atoli within the strange room on other side of Morrigu Barrow Wall, the room itself exists outside of areas created and observed by system administrators. Perhaps detecting system abnormalities within the field he prepares to resolve the situation however, Haseo alongside his party Pi and Kuhn confront Azure Kite deciding to combat him. A battle arises leaving him damaged by the three. Near defeat, Azure Kite uses Drain Heart restoring his data, and from there he transforms into The Azure Flame God, a being similar to an avatar. Haseo then activates his own avatar Skeith and the fight begins. Azure Flame God is defeated and reverts to Azure Kite, his azure colored data revealed, he breaks into data fragments removing him from the area. Afterwards Atoli is attacked by AIDA, possibly the same being Azure Kite was detecting.

Throughout the majority of volume two, Reminisce, Azure Kite is inactive, recuperating within a unique structure similar to a coffin. Regardless of his condition, he does appear at various points alongside Azure Balmung and Azure Orca as they defeat AIDA on the mirror server and later during Haseo’s battle against Sirius. Nearing the end of the game, he recovers and is free from his casket. The Azure Knights then mobilize to seemly aid Haseo’s party in the battle against Sakaki, but they are halted by Ovan in front of the Sign leading to the Keel Mountains of Briona Gideon. The Three Azure Knights rush forth to attack; Ovan then unlocks the barrel on his arm, and the scene cuts. Later Azure Kite severed arm is thrown before Haseo from Ovan whom offers it as a “gift,” soon after he reveals himself as the true Tri-Edge.

In the third volume, Redemption, Azure Kite heals from his previous battle against Ovan far quicker than before. Soon after the three Azure Knights locate and finish off Sakaki after he falls through Avatar Space into an Outer Dungeon. Later when Haseo, Yata, and Aina arrive at the Hulle Granz Cathedral, Azure Kite, Azure Balmung, and Azure Orca appear in an attempt to intercept them. As Aina reads from the Epitaph of Twilight a brief skirmish occurs revealing that Azure Kite is virtually invincible, however before the fight could continue any further Aura inhabits Aina’s character commanding the knights to stand down. Upon Aura’s order, he then hands over his weapons to Haseo and leaves. After clearing the game Aura sends an email to Haseo granting him each of the Azure Knights' member addresses.

After receiving an email from Ovan, Haseo goes to the Hulle Granz Cathedral to confront Azure Kite. However, the vengeful Adept Rogue is easily defeated and data drained bringing him from level 133 down to level 1 removing all of his equipment.

Azure Kite briefly appears at Δ Hidden Forbidden Festival.

Trivia

A version of Kite resembling Azure Kite was featured in a three page preview comic of G.U. in

the .hack//Legend of the Twilight manga.

The distinctive Dual Swords wielded by Azure Kite are named "Empty Skies."

The armor Azure Kite and his teammates wear is the "Empty Demon Suit" and the accessory they equip
is "Empty Eye of Sin." Interestingly, neither he nor either of his teammates will equip any other weapons or
accessories, likely due them not (technically) being members of any character class.

When in his Azure Flame God form, Azure Kite uses moves called "Azure Tiger Claws" and "Azure Wildflower." These moves are similar to attack skills used by Kite in the original games, only without the word Azure.

The giant arc hovering behind Azure Kite while he's the 'Azure Flame God' is formed the same way as the mark on 'Kite's' hat. In addition the "coffin" he appears in following his defeat forms the same symbol.

Both Azure Kite's English and Japanese voice actors also did the voice of Kite.
The enigmatic Azure Kite is 5'7" (170 cm) tall.

Unlike the other two knights. Kite will not say the name of the Arts he is using when using it, rather he yells an attack cry.

He will also reply in corrupted text when sent a Greeting Card. When sent the Hobbies Greeting card, he will reply with "...S%^&er", which may be a nod to the original Kite's player's love for Soccer.

When fighting Azure Kite for the second time, he uses a move that resembles Staccatto from the original games.

The “W” upon on Azure Kite's hat makes two other appearances, via Kite during the last chapter of .hack//XXXX and retconned onto the character model of original Kite and Kite in .hack//LINK.

"There's only one thing real about this world and that's us! The players! Getting stronger and defeating others! That's the way this game is played!"
— Haseo —

Haseo (ハセヲ) is an Adept Rogue known as the "Terror of Death", and is the main character in .hack//Roots, .hack//G.U., and .hack//GU+. He is a PKKer who is in search of Tri-Edge, the legendary PK that previously attacked Haseo's friend, Shino and put her into a coma in the real world

Appearance

haseo in his second form

haseo in his third form

Haseo's Class, Adept Rogue, is an uncommon Class in which the player is allowed to choose multiple classes for their character. Twin Blade, Edge Punisher, and Flick Reaper were the classes picked by Haseo, with Twin Blade being his initial form. Upon completing advancement quests called Job Extensions in-game, he can unlock and use the abilities of his other two forms.

Haseo has the appearance of a teen with red eyes and shaggy gray hair. In his first form, Haseo wears a black, light and tightly-fitted leather wardrobe. His midriff and shoulders are essentially left bare and decorated with wave tattoos. For his second form, his midriff is now covered and additional bronze-like metal platings were added to his arms and hips. Haseo's appearance change drastically in his third and final form. Gone are all the metal components, and in their place are spiky protrusions littered all over his armor. During the events in Redemption, the presence of all eight Avatars's data within him caused Haseo to unintentionally break system rules and obtain a fourth form. This form is even more complex than his third and grants him access to a type of weapon not in the game: dual guns. He can now wield a pair of pistols with blades attached, which can fire in normal combat and perform Twin Blade-like skills, a sort of opposite of the Steam Gunner class. Unlike his previous forms, his "Xth Form" is white; in the Crimson VS. side game, a card of Haseo with this appearance gives him the nickname, "The Silver Dual Gunner".

In all three games, with the changes in outfit, the marks on his body change as well, most notably on his cheeks. In his first form, the marks on his face are like red lightning bolts. In second form, the mark is jagged, a straight line with a strange design underneath(look in the picture). In third form, his marks cross, similar to a scar, and in Xth form, his marks are very similar to Kite's Player Character, or Shugo, from .hack and Legend of the Twilight respectively.

Personality

Haseo is usually a very cold person online. He finds it hard to get close to people, and even harder to trust them. From the start he'd been marked as an infamous player. First as Ovan's pet project, then as a member of the Twilight Brigade, and finally as a powerful PKKer. Because of his reputation and his attitude, he has few close friends within The World R:2. While he was a part of the Twilight Brigade he had a few allies, but since then many of them have left the game, or in Shino's case, just vanished altogether.

Shino's disappearance had a very powerful effect on him. She was his reason for playing the game, and the fact that she disappeared without a trace after being attacked by Tri-Edge has left a black mark on his psyche. He will stop at nothing until he finds out what happened to Shino, and gets his revenge. But as he progresses, Haseo learns how to trust his new friends and began his growth as a person.

A depiction of Ryou Misaki at age 17 from the CC2 website

Haseo's player, Ryou Misaki (三崎亮), is a sophomore student attending a famous private high school. He lives alone in Tokyo, and his dad owns a major company. He visits Shino, who is in a coma, at the hospital everyday. He decided to play The World R:2 after talking to a friend who used to play its previous version The World. He also works part time at a grocery store. He was once the player behind Sora, but lost all memory of The World after being Data Drained by Skeith

History

.hack//Roots

haseo in roots

In his first adventure in The World R:2 Haseo was saved from a group of PKers by a player named Ovan. On the advice of a player named Phyllo he decided to join Ovan's Guild Twilight Brigade and was introduced to its other members, including fellow newbie Tabby and Ovan's co-leader Shino. The Brigade soon found itself in a struggle with another Guild named TaN. Haseo, who was close with Tawaraya a high ranking member of TaN tried to help the situation, but it was no use. Tensions between the two Guilds reached a peak at the Battlefield of Coite-Bodher, where the Brigade fought against TaN in a fierce battle. Though the Brigade succeeded in driving off TaN's forces, Ovan mysteriously vanished during the fight.

Without its leader the Brigade soon collapsed. Haseo decided to remain with Shino, who he'd developed feelings for. The two began to grow closer, but without warning Shino was forcibly taken away from him. The culprit was an infamous PKer named Tri-Edge. He had PKed Shino while she was alone at the Hulle Granz Cathedral and somehow had placed her into a coma in reality. With only his name and a short description to go on, Haseo began to hunt Tri-Edge, hoping to find a way to bring Shino back.

Wanting more power, Haseo entered an event known as the Forest of Pain. At the center a brief encounter with Harald Hoerwick gave his character tremendous power. With this power he began ruthlessly hunting PKers, acquiring the title "The Terror of Death" after killing 100 PKers at once. Eventually he succeeded in finding Azure Kite, who he thought to be Tri-Edge, but was defeated by his Data Drain attack. His character was reformatted and sent back to level 1, forcing Haseo to start all over again.

Xth form Haseo in G.U.+

Now an infamous PKKer, Haseo wanders throughout The World R:2 looking for any clues regarding Tri-Edge. While wandering, he rescues Atoli who is about to be PKed by Bordeaux and her henchmen. Despite the objections of Atoli's guild leader, Sakaki, Atoli begins looking for Haseo so that she can repay her debt to him. However, upon finding him, Haseo simply blows her off. Soon he receives a mysterious message from Ovan. Traveling to Hulle Granz Cathedral, he encounters Ovan who informs him that Shino has fallen into a coma in the real world and that Tri-Edge will soon "return to the scene of that tragedy". Refusing to give up anything else about his activities, Ovan walks off, leaving Haseo alone in the Cathedral. Suddenly Tri-Edge appears. Haseo tries to fight against Tri-Edge but is defeated and data drained, falling unconscious.

He is revived by Yata and Pi, who introduce themselves as System Administrators. They inform Haseo that they want his help to solve the current problems in The World R:2, claiming that mysterious things known as AIDAs are the cause of the problems. Haseo refuses at first and storms off, but a chance meeting with Atoli causes him to change his mind. He accepts their offer and becomes a member of their organization "Project GU".

Soon afterwards, Haseo returns to the Cathedral, but he is suddenly teleported by the Sign there to another Lost Ground. Waiting for him is Bordeaux, who is eager for a rematch. Haseo tries to fight her, but she suddenly transforms herself, revealing that her character has been possessed by an AIDA. Haseo is nearly killed but is rescued by Kuhn, a player wielding the mysterious Avatar Magus. Kuhn introduces himself as another member of Project G.U. He decides to make Haseo his partner.

Together, Haseo and Kuhn travel to Lumina Cloth where a fighting tournament is taking place. There they see that the current champion of the tournament, Endrance, is cheating by using the entity Avatar Macha to fight for him. Haseo challenges him to a duel in the arena, and manages to activate his own Avatar Avatar Skeith in response to Macha's attacks. Skeith manages to defeat Macha, apparently cleansing both the avatar, and Endrance's AIDA Mia from Endrance's body.

Haseo as he appears in the .Hack//G.U. Prototype Trailer

When Haseo began playing The World, he was approached by two players IYOTEN and Asta, who offered to help teach him the game. On their adventure however, the two betrayed Haseo and PKed him. The mysterious player Ovan appeared, PKKing them and reviving Haseo. Eight months later, following the events of Roots, Haseo joins the newbie helper guild Canard in order to help regain his lost power as quickly as possible. He is also befriended by Atoli, a member of Moon Tree, and targeted by Bordeaux, a PKer from Kestrel with a vendetta against him. He joins the mysterious organization "G.U." (formed by Yata and Pi) to get closer to finding Tri-Edge again. He also participates in the Demon Palace Arena Tournament, where he is able to awaken as an Epitaph User.

During the tournament, he also develops rivalries with the ex-PK Matsu and the ex-Emperor Alkaid, and he exposes the Emperor Endrance to be an AIDA-PC. The legendary Emperor, Antares, also takes him under his wing, helping him unlock his Edge Punisher form once again. However, in an attempt to prove herself to Haseo, Atoli disappears searching for Tri-Edge. "G.U." is able to track her down, to a mysterious room, but when they arrive Azure Kite appears and attacks them. They defeat him, and he crumbles into pieces. Haseo is disheartened that even though "Tri-Edge" is defeated, there is no change in Shino's state.

Haseo's "Xth-Form".Letting down their guard after defeating Azure Kite, the group is shocked when an AIDA emerges, steals Atoli's Epitaph, and escapes from the room. The incident places all the players of The World onto a mirror AIDA Server, and no one is able to log out. "G.U." succeeds in transferring everyone back to the original server, but even escaping to the real world, Atoli finds that her arm is now paralyzed. It later becomes clear that the Holy Palace Emperor, Sirius, is infected by the AIDA in possession of Atoli's Epitaph. With help from Endrance, Haseo is able to defeat Sirius and retrieve Atoli's Epitaph, but not before an AIDA-infected Bordeaux PKs Alkaid, causing her to become a Lost One in Haseo's arms, much like Shino before her. After the tournament, Sakaki, who had been behind the actions of Bordeaux, used Atoli to take over Moon Tree's @HOME, turning it into an AIDA Server. Haseo and "G.U.", however, free Atoli and defeat Sakaki. At this point, Ovan appears again, to reveal that he is the true "Tri-Edge" that Haseo has been looking for, and is the one behind all of Sakaki's actions. Haseo fights Ovan, but it ultimately ends in a draw as neither is powerful enough to defeat the other.

Haseo using Avatar Awakening.During this time, "G.U." is taken over by Sakaki, entrusted with the position by the CyberConnect Corporation due to his ability to control the AIDA. Haseo participates in Sakaki's PK tournament to defeat him once and for all. He then tracks down Ovan, and is finally able to defeat him. Ovan reveals that the reason he needed Haseo to defeat him was so that he could unleash his Avatar Corbenik's true power, "Rebirth", so as to cause the entire Internet to reset. This results in the destruction of all AIDA, curing himself and his sister Aina, which seems to have been Ovan's original goal. However, this unleashes another threat, Cubia, into not only the The World, but the entire Internet. Haseo and the other Epitaph Users are able to defeat Cubia, with help from Ovan, who apparently sacrifices himself to stop the monster.

Trivia

Haseo's Japanese voice actor, Takahiro Sakurai, also does the voice of Sieg.

Haseo stars in a commercial included in the game for Keroro Gunsou: Meromero Battle Royal Z, where he literally kicks Keroro Gunsou, the mascot, off the screen.

"Haseo" is an alternate reading of the characters in a Japanese poet's, Matsuo Bashou's, name. His disciple, Kawai Sora, was the inspiration for Sora's name.

Haseo is 5'8" (174 cm) tall.
Haseo's arena team is named: "Team Haseo".

Haseo's starter weapons are Spin Gai Gu, Broad Legged, Scythe Shouxiao, and DG-X.

The weapon Haseo uses in the prototype is called Scythe Hook. It can be aquired in Vol.2.

The Shopkeeper from .hack//LINK possesses a picture of Haseo in his collection.

"The World and all of its wonders; this is my world, you see."
— Tsukasa —

Online

Appearance
Tsukasa is a young silver-haired boy clad in grey robes. He has two red wave tattoos on his face and almost always carries a silver staff with him

Personality
Tsukasa was initially an arrogant, cynical loner. Tsukasa tended to avoid others as much as possible and didn't take any enjoyment in leveling up or participating in events. As Tsukasa was slowly befriended by Mimiru, Bear, and Subaru, he began to warm up to them, eventually seeking them out and enjoying the game. By the end of the series, Tsukasa is considerably more outgoing and friendly.

An Shoji

Offline
In the real world, Tsukasa is a high school girl named An Shoji. Her mother died when she was very young, so she was raised by her father. Her father, a businessman of some kind, subjected her to years of mental, and sometimes physical abuse and neglect. In order to escape from reality, An started playing The World, choosing a male avatar in order to further distance her character from her real self. The name "Tsukasa" comes from the character for the "Ji" (司) in "Shouji".

After the events of SIGN, An begins a romantic relationship with Mariko Misono and meets Mimiru's player offline for their promised trip to Shimokitazawa. She is also financially supported by Ryo Sakuma. Unison reveals that she is living in a dorm (she attends a boarding school) and, inexplicably, has a keychain of the cat Macha on her cell phone.

Hobbies
An's hobbies include playing The World and watching old movies, which she used to watch with her mother when she was still alive.

History
Though the player behind Tsukasa is female, Tsukasa is male and will be refered to using male pronouns.

.hack//Wotan's Spear
While searching for the Vagrant AI Macha, Albireo, leader of the Cobalt Knights, hears rumors of a Wavemaster that has the power to control a mysterious monster. Knowing that the monster has the ability to physically effect players in the real world, Albireo decides the the Wavemaster Tsukasa is of a higher priority. Soon, Albireo encounters Tsukasa after his monster has killed four PKKs. However, the two never get the chance to speak because Macha appears, and after multiple warnings, orders a Twilight Guardian to attack Albireo causing the deletion of his character.

.hack//SIGN

Tsukasa as seen in SIGN

As part of her plan to prevent the waking of Aura and her birth as the Ultimate AI, Morganna conspired to link Aura to a person who could corrupt Aura, placing her in a state where she would never awaken. The person chosen for this purpose was An Shoji, a female high school student and the person behind the character known as Tsukasa. Tsukasa's real life was far from perfect; her mother had died at an early age, leaving her in the care of her abusive father. In order to escape from her life in reality she had created Tsukasa, spending hours in The World so that she wouldn't have to be reminded of her life outside of it. Realizing that Tsukasa wanted nothing more than to remain in The World forever, Morganna sent her servant Macha to lure him into a trap. Acting as a friendly PC, Macha took Tsukasa to the bottom of a dungeon, where a trap set by Morganna data drained him, trapping his mind inside of The World itself. To further trap him, Morganna altered his memories, making him believe he was a male in reality, as well as focusing on the memories of his father.

Wanting to keep Tsukasa safe, Morganna bestowed two great powers on him: the ability to summon a powerful Twilight Guardian and the ability to bypass the Chaos Gate and warp from field to field or server to server at will. These powers soon drew the attention of the Crimson Knights, who saw Tsukasa as nothing more then a hacker trying to destabilize the system. The Captain of the Crimson Knights, Silver Knight, held a particular grudge against him, having been killed by his Twilight Guardian in their first encounter. Other players, such as Mimiru and Bear, became concerned about Tsukasa, especially when they realized that he appeared to always be inside of the game, never logging out.

Because of his powers, rumors began to circulate throughout the community that Tsukasa had discovered the legendary Key of the Twilight, a mythical item said to give its wielder absolute control over The World. Knowing that he hadn't found it, and not realizing that the real key was under his very nose in the form of Aura, Tsukasa decided to join up with Mimiru and Bear and attempt to search for the Key himself. Their investigation, aided somewhat by the players Crim, BT and Sora, led them to a strange upside down zone. There they met with an AI copy of Harald Hoerick, the original designer of The World. Through his ramblings Tsukasa realized that the key was in fact Aura, but an attack by Macha and the memory wipe that followed caused him to forget what he had learned.

In his confusion, Tsukasa was met by Subaru, the Guildmaster of the Crimson Knights. Confined to a wheelchair in the real world, she used The World as an escape too. Seeing each other as kindred spirits, the two began a relationship and started seeing each other frequently inside of The World. Opening up to her, Tsukasa decided to show her Aura, but upon arriving in the field where Aura had been, he saw that she had been taken elsewhere by Morganna. As punishment for bringing Subaru, Morganna tried to completely destroy his memory, leaving him in a vegetable-like state. However, Morganna failed to destroy him completely and he was able to recover after receiving a message from Subaru. Traveling to Net Slum, he was told the entirety of Morganna's plan by Helba and realized that if he wanted to break free from her clutches he would have to awaken Aura himself.

With the help of his friends and the unexpected aid of Macha, who had decided to betray Morganna, Tsukasa managed to travel to the place she was holding Aura. There he declared that he was no longer afraid of Morganna or of reality and that he intended to log out and meet Subaru. This caused the binds on Aura to break, awakening her. In retaliation, Morganna summoned Skeith to hunt him down, but some quick thinking by Helba allowed them to escape, and Tsukasa to wake in the real world after being trapped in The World for about six months. Leaving the hospital, An Shoji was met by Mariko Misono, the player behind Subaru. With tears in their eyes the two embraced, having finally found what they'd been searching for.

Tsukasa being Data Drained

.hack//Games

Though Tsukasa had left The World, fragments of his PC body and personality still survived in the system. These memory fragments, along with those of the other SIGN characters, began to appear throughout The World. Kite discovered several of them throughout his adventure. Eventually, enough fragments gathered in Net Slum that Helba was able to fashion a Tsukasa AI. She gave this AI's member address to Kite, who gladly accepted it into his party.

.hack//GIFT

After witnessing the corpse of Orca (actually Bear), Tsukasa aids Mimiru in searching for the Twilight Hot Springs. Tsukasa proves to be of no use to Mimiru, but he eventually joins with Kite in the male hot springs, despite being a girl in real life. This fact is made fun of as Tsukasa is drawn with a female anatomy while he is sitting naked next to Kite. Tsukasa is also seen holding a teddy bear, which he had gotten from Aura's bed in SIGN.

Trivia
Tsukasa shares the same Japanese and English voice overs (Mitsuki Saiga and Brianne Siddal) as Elk. Mitsuki Saiga, his Japanese VA also does the voice of Endrance

His AI's starting weapon is called Ludicrous, a level 99 rare staff.

Helba

There's an order that The World desires, then there's the order that you desire. Which one should it take, Balmung?"
— Helba —

Helba (ヘルバ) is an infamous hacker that appears throughout the .hack series

Online

Appearance

Helba is a surprisingly tall female character that wears revealing clothing. She dons head-wear similar to a priest's cap that covers her eyes. Her normally masked face is revealed in the second volume of XXXX

Personality

Helba is always calm, collected, and confident in what she does. She also puts on a mysterious persona and acts suspiciously around her so-called allies. She always seems to know more than she's revealing

Offline

Nothing is known about Helba except for the fact that she is a professional hacker who takes her work very seriously. Though she uses a female persona, it is not known whether she is actually female, or even whether she is just one person. She is very active on the Japanese servers of The World however, leading many to believe that she is Japanese

Hobbies

She enjoys playing mind games and hacking, and finds such things as deleted data particularly interesting. She also has some knowledge of the Epitaph of the Twilight.

Helba

History

.hack//SIGN

In SIGN, Helba gave information to the main characters by giving them hints to get into The Inverted Castle where AI Harald was located. At the later stage, Helba opened a Helba Gate, which gave them access to Net Slum. In Net Slum, they encountered copies of Tsukasa's data as well as Morganna's Guardians. After Aura was awakened by Tsukasa and the party encountered Skeith, Helba ordered them to retreat and deleted the field they were on.

.hack//Games

Helba plays a much larger role in the .hack//Games. She interrupts Skeith's attack, preventing him from Data Draining Kite. She later informs Kite about his Data Drain and Gate Hack abilities. Her role consisted of sending subtle hints as well as retrieving deleted data. As Kite defeated more Phases and the true enemy began to reveal itself, Helba would become actively involved, developing a program to counter the enemy and creating a server in which the final battle would be fought.

Helba in SIGN

.hack//Another Birth

Helba's role in Another Birth is the same as in the Games.

.hack//XXXX

Helba makes several appearances throughout XXXX to aid Kite and avatar Cubia in their quest. During a fight with Kite and Balmung against Corbenik, she is attacked and her mask is knocked off. Though not canon, this is the only time Helba's face is ever seen.

Helba and Lios in XXXX

.hack//Unison

In the opening, the "dancing lady" turns into Helba for reasons unknown. In the end of the special episode, she comes out naked and soothes Orca's and Bear's feelings, as well as tells everyone that she was the one who PKed BT, in order to make the plot more interesting.

.hack//Legend of the Twilight (manga)

Helba's role is significantly smaller in Legend of the Twilight. She only appears in the prologue chapter, in a single panel. Afterwards, she never appears in person, only references to her are made. Kazu provides Shugo with a Helba Key to Net Slum, where he would meet with Balmung. Balmung would provide Shugo with the Virus Cores necessary to access the field Aura was in.

.hack//G.U.

Helba is only mentioned once in a message board post during Redemption, referring to her past role as Queen of Net Slum.

Trivia

Helba joins Kite's party once the player completes Quarantine at level 99 with a hacked level 93 weapon called 8 Wise Men.

Helba is the only player that joins Kite with 99 in all stats and 9999 HP.

Helba is the only character that moves by hovering.

Both the English and the Japanese VA also did the voices of Kaoru Asaba from Liminality and Emma Wielant in .hack//Games.

Kite

Kite (カイト) is the main character and the character you control in the .hack//Games.

Online

kites original model

Appearance

Kite's avatar is a young blue haired boy dressed mostly in red clothing, with a red hat. His wave symbol consists of two tattoos on his cheeks. Originally his character was dressed in an aqua green, but after using the Book of Twilight given to him by Aura he gained his unique red appearance, as well as the wave markings on his pants. As a Twin Blade he wields two short swords. Though usually invisible, he carries the Twilight Bracelet on his right arm, which allows him to use his Data Drain and Gate Hacking abilities.

Personality

A very straightforward character who is devoted to awakening Yasuhiko from his coma. His cheerful personality has won him many friends inside The World. Though polite to strangers he shows a rather witty sense of humour to those he's close with. He is the type of person who will stop whatever he's doing to help somebody who's in trouble. He spends a lot of his time online with his friend and partner BlackRose.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world Kite is a 14 year old boy in his second year of Junior High. He lives somewhere in Japan and goes to school with his close friend Yasuhiko

Hobbies

Kite enjoys building models and he also plays soccer with his friends though he's not on an official team. A lover of science fiction books, he has read his favorite novels multiple times. His favorite food is beef stew. He's a big fan of the British Soccer team "Nissan FC" and owns a special ball with their logo on it.

History

.hack//Games

Kite was originally invited to play The World by his real life friend Yasuhiko. On their first adventure, they ran into a strange girl named Aura. This girl tried to give Yasuhiko's character "Orca" a strange book, but unfortunately a strange monster named Skeith appeared and killed Orca. Skeith prepared to attack Kite, but a hacker named Helba intervened, saving Kite and booting him from the server with the book. Soon after this event, Kite learned that Yasuhiko had fallen into a coma in the real world. Suspecting the cause of his coma was due to his encounter in The World, Kite began investigating.

He soon encountered several players who would help him on his quest. BlackRose, a Heavy Blade would become his closest companion, but others would play a part too, including the mysterious Mia and her partner Elk, the rare item hunter Mistral, the rambunctious Piros, and the calculating Wiseman. Balmung, Orca's partner in The World would also play a part, though he saw Kite as little more then a hacker at first.

An encounter with a Data Bug at Hulle Granz Cathedral caused the Book of Twilight to activate, transforming Kite's costume and granting him access to the Twilight Bracelet, an object that gave him two special abilities. Data Drain, the ability to alter data in The World, and Gate Hacking, which allowed him to break through barriers set up inside of the system.

With these objects, Kite began investigating the strange events plaguing The World, and began to discover clues left by the game's enigmatic creator, Harald Hoerwick. With the help of his allies, Kite began to piece together the true nature of The World. With his friends by his side, he battled against Skeith and the other seven Phases of the Cursed Wave, endured system crashes, and even fought against his own dark reflection, the anti-existence of his bracelet, Cubia. Forming an unlikely alliance between his party, the hacker Helba, and the system administrator Lios, Kite formed the group that would later be known as the .hackers.

Together they penetrated into the very core of The World and brought about the rebirth of the ultimate A.I., Aura. Through his actions and the actions of his friends he was finally able to free Orca from his coma along with the other victims, bringing a golden age to The World.

.hack//Another Birth

Wanting clues about what caused her brother Fumikazu to fall into a coma the character BlackRose latched onto one of the first people she'd met and dragged him to Hulle Granz Cathedral. That person was none other than Kite. The two were attacked by a Data Bug in the cathedral which activated Kite's Book of Twilight, causing the Twilight Bracelet to form on his arm. After realizing that Kite was in the same situation as her, BlackRose decided to ally herself with him. Together they began investigating the problems plaguing The World, eventually leading them to a confrontation with Skeith.

kite in another birth

.hack//XXXX

While adventuring in The World with his friend Orca, Kite encountered a mysterious girl named Aura. Giving a book to Orca, Aura pleaded for help but was interrupted by the arrival of a creature named Skeith. Attacking the unprepared Orca, Skeith easily defeated him, putting him into a coma in the real world. Barely escaping himself, Kite used the book to alter his character data, and began a quest to find out what had really happened that day. Along the way he encountered BlackRose and Mistral, who decided to join his fight. When he eventually encountered Skeith again, Kite was able to defeat him using the Twilight Bracelet, an item he had received from Aura's book. However before he could celebrate his victory, a strange player named Cubia appeared and told him that he had merely won the first battle in a long war.

Soon afterwards, Kite found himself at odds with the system administrator Lios, and Orca's old partner Balmung. Though Kite was unprepared for their accusations that he was responsible for Orca's condition, he refused to listen to them and continued with his original path. He was soon able to turn Balmung to his side, and along with Cubia began hunting the Eight Phases of Morganna.

Following his final fight against the last Phase Corbenik, as Aura jumped in as he was going forward to deal the final blow to Morganna, the power Aura released enhanced his character, causing his PC to look very similar to that of Azure Kite from the G.U. series. Most of this change wore off after the battle, however the changing of the symbol on his hat was permanent.

Kite in XXXX

.hack//Unison

Kite appears in Unison along with his friends Orca and Balmung. They go on a hunt for any Data Bugs that still exist in The World. When they don't find any, Balmung asks Kite if there is any reason for him to still carry the Bracelet. Kite responds that he intends to keep the Bracelet until he discovers the reason why he was given it, and that he believes that it's the duty of the Bracelet's wielder to protect The World.

Balmung and Orca agree with him, and soon after go with him to a party in Net Slum, where Kite not only meets the entire cast of .hack//SIGN, but also dances with BlackRose.

.hack//GIFT

Kite is probably one of the most relaxed characters to appear in GIFT. Unfortunately he has a hard time finding time to lay back, since BlackRose keeps dragging him around so they can be the first people to reach Helba's secret hot springs. During their adventure they come across the corpse of Orca (actually Bear). Since Balmung was near the corpse Kite assumes that he was responsible, and that he took Helba's words banning roleplaying as an excuse to indulge in long suppressed PKing urges.

Soon afterwards they travel to another field where they come across Bear (actually Orca) having a conversation with B.T. who informs them that they're having an "adult conversation" and that they should go away. The arrival of Tsukasa and several other SIGN characters interrupts them, and in the ensuing conversation Kite realizes that he can reach Helba's field via Gate Hacking. The "Gift" was a reference to the bracelet given to him by Aura. Things are interrupted when the field suddenly crashes.

Arriving at the hot springs they come across B.T.'s corpse. Since Balmung is nearby Kite once again blames him, ignoring his tearful plea of innocence. The rest of the cast arrives soon afterwards, and BlackRose speeds off towards the spring with Mimiru close behind her. Without either of their partners to bug them Kite and Tsukasa bathe in one of the hot springs, creating an awkward moment when Tsukasa admits that he's actually a girl (complete with breasts under his robe). Embarrassed, Kite quickly covers himself with a towel.

kite in .hack//GIFT

.hack//Legend of the Twilight (manga)

Kite has only a small role in Legend of the Twilight. Balmung mentions that Kite has recently graduated and is probably busy with job interviews in real life. Wanting Kite to meet Shugo, Balmung E-mails him inviting him to return to The World. Kite accepts his offer and is seen warping into Mac Anu with Orca and BlackRose at the end of the final volume, presumably going to see Shugo and his party.

.hack//4koma

Though not initially obvious, Kite is himself the most changed of all characters in .hack//4koma. Although he maintains the image of the kind, selfless hero, this is, in truth, a facade. Kite's "true" personality often shows through, revealing him to be attention-seeking, selfish, asinine and insincere. He shows great animosity towards anyone who gets more attention than himself, and often does whatever he can to bring that person down in any way possible.

Kite has a very unpleasant relationship with Haseo especially, largely due to Haseo's taking the role of main character. The first time they meet he unabashedly throws away the cake Haseo had given him as a welcoming present. Although Kite seems generally friendly while Haseo is around, he often subtly aggravates him either by playing a cruel practical joke or subtly undermining his role as the new protagonist.

Trivia

Kite's Twilight Bracelet is replaced with a lug nut during .hack//GIFT.

Kite’s name remains unspoken during the games, mainly because the player can rename the character; however, his default name Kite is the official name. In later material such as the Terminal Disk, Kite's name is spoken normally

The reason Kite chose his name is unknown, but the development team that created .hack derived it from "Kaitou" (怪盗), a Japanese word meaning "phantom thief". .hack started out as a game about a thief in a fantasy setting, and that name stuck.

Kite's proportions were based off of Naruto.

Kite’s starting weapon is level one weapon called “Amateur Blades”; he always wields these in the game’s cut scenes.

Ever since the creation of Kite’s avatar his character model has appeared in every era of .hack from then on. (.hack//Legend of Twilight – Shugo, .hack//G.U. Azure Kite, .hack//LINK Kite)

The Shopkeeper from .hack//LINK has a picture of Kite in his collection.

To love someone... It is not to shut one's eyes to the other, nor to block one's ears to the truth... To love one another... Is to walk through life together... Open your eyes, open your ears... Look at each other... and together seek the best path for the both of you."
— Endrance —

Endrance (エンデュランス) is the Epitaph User titled "The Temptress". He is a Blade Brandier, and acknowledged as a powerful player, even by the strong players of The World R:2. He is also an AIDA-PC. Endrance is cold and has little interest in other players, and only shows emotion to the small cat on his shoulder.

Online

Endrance is a somewhat androgynous male character with long, braided blue hair. He wears tight-fitting purple armor as well as a cap lavishly decorated with roses. In combat he wields a long thin sword.

Personality

Endrance is obsessed with beauty. He sees the other players as nothing more than "ugly dolls" and treats them coldly. Though he is online almost constantly he never meets with other players, instead traveling through fields by himself. The only times he makes public appearances is when he's called into the Arena to defend his title. He is fiercely devoted to the small cat on his shoulder, which he has named "Mia". When fighting he constantly refers to somebody he calls "She" though it's unknown if this is a reference to Mia, Macha, or some other entity altogether.

Shortly after he joins Haseo, Endrance becomes much friendlier, and is especially affectionate towards Haseo.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world, Endrance is a 20-year-old net addict named Kaoru Ichinose (一ノ瀬薫). He lives with his parents in Kanagawa Prefecture. According to Yata, he plays almost 24/7, logging out just enough to sleep. He was also the player behind Elk seven years before.

Endrance in Alcor.

.hack//G.U. Games

Endrance is the reigning Emperor of the Demon Palace arena circuit; he is also an Epitaph User. He uses Avatar Macha to defeat his opponents, since avatars are invisible to all but other Epitaph Users. Everyone else just believes he is unbelievably fast and strong. Saku is one of his rabid fangirls, calling him "Master-En" out of respect, and believes they are "bound together by a red string of fate." Saku is chasing him, though Bo shares very little interest. When facing Haseo in the duel arena, they both call forth their avatars. Haseo wins, and Endrance's cat, Mia, is revealed to be an AIDA. After losing "Mia" again, he encases himself in a block of ice at the bottom of the lake at Indieglut Lugh, drawn to being in The World, but too sad to do anything. Saku finds him and protects him, at some point becoming infected with AIDA herself. Haseo eventually seeks out Endrance for help, as was Alkaid's last wish, and gives Endrance a speech, saying that he needs him. Moved by this, Endrance later appears and saves Haseo when Bordeaux has him cornered in the Arena. It quickly becomes apparent that Haseo's words have caused him to completely replace Mia in Endrance's life, with him as the object of Endrance's affection.

In Volume 3, during the PK Tournament, it appears that Endrance betrays Haseo and joins Taihaku's team. However, in the end, Endrance's true colours are shown when he stabs Sakaki in the back with his sword before adding his power to Haseo's in order to allow him to use Skeith against Sakaki

.hack//GU+

In GU+, Endrance rules as the undisputed champion of the arena. Watching from the sidelines Haseo and Kuhn notice both his Avatar, as well as the small catlike AIDA that has attached itself to him. Wanting to rid him of his AIDA Haseo decides to challenge him to a fight in the arena. Endrance begins to attack him with Avatar Macha but Haseo activates Avatar Skeith who manages to defeat Macha after a short fight. During the battle Haseo is able to temporarily glimpse into Endrance's mind, and realizes that the AIDA attached to him was draining his emotions by taking the form of his old cat. He uses Skeith to destroy Mia, dealing great psychological damage to Endrance.

A short time later Endrance is attacked by Tri-Edge. Though he puts up a decent fight he is defeated, likely falling into a coma in the real world. Yata takes his comatose PC body to the Serpent of Lore, where it rests alongside Sakubo and Shino, other victims of Tri-Edge.

Trivia

Endrance's starting weapon is called Princess Blade

Endrance is the only male character which Haseo can marry in the max affection ending of the game.

Endrance's Japanese voice actor, Mitsuki Saiga, also does the voices of Elk and Tsukasa.

Endrance's character is 6'4" (194 cm) in height.

A poll on CyberConnect2's website shows Endrance as the fifth most popular character in .hack//G.U.

— Elk —

Elk (エルク) is a young Wavemaster, who looks much like Tsukasa from .hack//SIGN. He follows the cat player, Mia, around all the time and is close friends with her

Online

Appearance

Elk's PC is a young, blue-haired boy wearing dark blue robes. He almost always has a gloomy expression on his face. In terms of appearance, he is an almost identical twin of Tsukasa, the only difference being minute changes in their robes and hat, and a change in color scheme. (Tsukasa is mostly Grey and Red, Elk is Blue and Grey). Elk's face tattoo is also slightly different.

Personality

Elk is a rather insecure person online. He seems to have a lot of trouble trusting other players, and is always shocked when somebody is nice to him. The only person he seems to trust is Mia, who he is rarely seperated from. He can be downright mean to people if he feels they are trying to draw Mia's attention away from him.

Offline

Basic Info

Offline, Elk is Kaoru Ichinose (一ノ瀬薫), a thirteen-year-old middle school student who joined The World to make friends and attempt to change his shy and passive personality. He eventually went on to create the character Endrance.

History

.hack//Games

Elk was first introduced to Kite through Mia. Intrigued by the bracelet wielded by the newbie Twin Blade, Mia took it upon herself to teach Kite some of the various uses of the bracelet, namely the power of Gate Hacking. Jealous of the attention Kite was getting Elk tried to convince Kite to give up his bracelet, an offer that Kite refused. Concerned for Elk, Kite helped him patch up his relationship with Mia, forming an unsteady friendship between them.

Complications arose when Mia suddenly lost her ability to speak properly. Figuring it was a problem with her headset, Elk was able to ignore the problem and continued adventuring as normal. However, Mia's condition was more then just speech difficulties. As time went on she began exibiting strange behavior, and more disturbingly began to reveal gaps in her memory. Concerned Kite and Elk tried to help Mia, but found themselves only able to watch as she became more and more erratic. After a while, Elk found himself unable to contact Mia. Desperate, he spent hours searching The World for any trace of her to no avail, ignoring his other friends in favor of his search. At one point in his search he encountered Bear, who was surprised at his uncanny resembelance to the player Tsukasa.

Concerned for Elk as well, Kite offered him a job as part of Helba's Anti-Wave operation. He was given part of a vaccine program designed to trap the Cursed Wave so that Kite and the rest of his party could fight it on their own terms. However, things began to spiral out of control when the Wave suddenly changed direction, moving directly towards Elk. Kite and his party raced to the bottom of the dungeon where Elk was located, only to find him with Mia at the bottom. To Elk's shock and horror, Mia revealed that she had no existence outside of the system, she was nothing more then a program inside of The World. She suddenly began to transform, revealing her true form, that of Macha the Temptress, Phase Six of the Cursed Wave. Using her powers to teleport Elk away, Macha began fighting against Kite.

Rushing back to the dungeon, Elk arrived in time to see Kite deliver the final blow. As he watched, Macha was destroyed by Kite's Bracelet, temporarily transforming back into Mia. Though he attempted to save her, it proved futile, and he could only watch as Mia faded away in front of him. Furious he blamed Kite for Mia's death, and ran away taking his part of the vaccine with him. It is suggested that he joins Morganna, giving her the virus Helba had created, (it is suggested that Elk was fooled into believing that Morganna would bring Mia back to him). Upon receiving the vaccine, Morganna created a virus that allowed her to data drain the vaccine and spread its effects to the whole of Lios's team, causing them to immediatly fall into comas.

Despite what he had done, Elk continued to watch Kite from a distance and was present in Net Slum when it was attacked by Corbenik the Rebirth the Eighth Phase of the Wave. He watched from a safe distance as Kite and the rest of the .hackers fought a desperate battle against the Phase. Just when it seemed that victory was at hand, Corbenik released its ultimate attack, Drain Heart which began to take out the combatants one by one. Watching as the attack flew towards Kite, Elk had a sudden change of heart. Leaping in front of Kite, he took the blast instead. His final words before falling comatose were an apology for his selfish actions. Using the opportunity Elk had given him, Kite rushed towards Corbenik in a last ditch final attack, which resulted in the destruction of the Phase, and the Cursed Wave as well. Through his efforts, Elk had managed to secure a victory over Morganna and caused the birth of Aura the Ultimate AI.

Soon afterwards Elk and Kite both received an e-mail from Aura listing the location of a dungeon. They traveled together to the bottom of the dungeon where they were confronted by Macha who fought against them using a powerful Twilight Guardian. Victorious, Elk watched as Macha transformed back into Mia, reuniting him with the friend he had thought lost forever. Though she lacked any memories of Kite and everything related to the entire incident, Elk promised that they would make new memories for her together.

.hack//Another Birth

Elk appeared briefly in the first volume of Another Birth. He approached Kite, BlackRose, and Natsume when they were preparing to go adventuring and dragged Kite away to go see Mia. This forced an unhappy BlackRose to entertain Natsume by herself.

In volume 2 of Another Birth, Elk ventured with Kite and Blackrose to fight Innis at Λ Resurrecting, Confused, Judgment. To Blackrose's surprise, Elk didn't seem frightened when they fought Innis. He was worried about Mia at the time because she wasn't online.

.hack//Unison

n Unison, Elk and Mia both travel to a bar located in Carmina Gadelica, there Elk is introduced to Tsukasa for the first time, and watches as he reunites with Mia (who he knew as Macha the cat). Later the pair travel to Net-Slum where they join a party hosted by Helba. Elk and Mia dance with each other as fireworks light up the sky.

Elk appears briefly in GIFT, where Mia forces him to make out with her in a field of flowers.

Natsume

"Am I useful? I feel like I'm just in the way of things..."
— Natsume —

Natsume (なつめ) is a young and naïve Twin Blade that joins Kite's party when he gives her the Spiral Edge she was searching for. Normally a shy and socially awkward girl, she started playing The World because she wanted to change.

Online

Appearance

Natsume is a Twin Blade with green hair and a blue one-piece outfit. Her dress is adorned with triangular patterns; blue symbols (the same one that appear on Kite's hat) appear on her gloves and in the form of tattoos on her legs. According to the official .hack JP website, her chosen waves are Fire and Wood.

Personality

Although she is naive, she does make up for it with energy and a positive outlook. This is a great contrast to her rather pessimistic e-mails. Her e-mails show that she doesn't think much of her abilities; but regardless of what she thinks, she gives it her all when battling in The World. She is actually more skilled than she gives herself credit for; in her quest to become stronger, she followed a hoax and successfully traversed to the bottom of a high-level dungeon solo before she had to be rescued by Kite.

Offline

Basic Info

Natsume is a girl in the 9th grade, in her last year of middle school. She lacks self-confidence and dislikes athletic activities. She sometimes gets sick the day before she has to run track. She also works as a librarian and is a decent cook, especially when it comes to beef dishes. Her mother's name is Yayoi.

Hobbies

Natsume is a fan of science fiction novels and popular book titles such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

History

.hack//Games

Natsume does not play a significant role in the Games. She has only two sidequests, one of which is her recruitment dungeon. After spending some time in Kite's party, Natsume follows a false rumor on the BBS and must be saved from the bottom of a high-level dungeon. Aside from those two missions and her e-mails, Natsume does not seem to play any additional role. Natsume makes it quite clear that despite her best efforts to improve herself, she still relies on Kite for moral support. Like most of Kite's party she helped fight against Corbenik and was temporarily placed into a coma as a result of his Drain Heart attack.

.hack//Another Birth

Natsume as she appears in Another Birth.

Natsume appears in Another Birth after she is introduced to BlackRose by Kite. The three plan on investigating a field where Aura was spotted, but Elk interrupts and forces Kite to help him find Mia. Natsume and BlackRose wind up traveling to Θ Sinking Someone's Scaffold together. Natsume tells BlackRose about getting the Spiral Edge from Kite, and BlackRose realizes that Kite is actually a nice guy. Natsume later accompanies BlackRose and Sanjuro to Δ Hideous Someone's Giant where they fight against the powerful Parasite Dragon.

In the second volume, Natsume makes a minor appearance during her Level 10 Vine mission. She is rescued by Kite and BlackRose, both of whom she sent e-mails to about her plan to beat the Level 10 Vine. Embarassed that she fell for a hoax, Natsume apologizes to both of them and gates out, promising to grow stronger in earnest.

Like in the games, Natsume joins the other members of Kite's friend list in the final battle.

.hack//XXXX

Natsume meets BlackRose by chance in Mac Anu which causes BlackRose to introduce her to Kite later. Instantly taken with Kite, Natsume travels with the pair to adventure in a field. However she is seperated from Kite after Lios uses his administrative powers to teleport both BlackRose and Natsume to a different field, allowing him to talk with Kite alone.

Trivia

Both Natsume's Japanese voice actress (Maaya Sakamoto) and English voice actress (Lia Sargent) also play the role of Aura

Natsume is the only female Twin Blade available in the .hack//Games.

It is speculated that she has met Kite offline some time between Mutation and Outbreak. She says quite casually that she would invite Kite over to try her cooking if her beef stew comes out right; this implies that Kite already knows where she lives, or possibly that they even go to the same school.

In the last mail she sends to Kite she very clearly states that she is in love with him.

It has been theorized, though unlikely, that a line in Natsume's dialogue ("Oh, are you sure? But I can't give you anything in return. Well... except maybe myself.") is responsible for the "Mature Sexual Themes" in the ESRB rating.

Her starting weapon is Spiral Edge, a rare level 6 weapon, which is the weapon you get for her at that dungeon.

Her original weapon was the Kai, a level 1 Twin Blade which looks like a golden version of the Steel Blades.

Her starting level is 1 when she first joins the party.

Natsume's only BG Image for the ALTIMIT Desktop is Image 40: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto - Natsume Color

Natsume co-starred with Piros as the hosts of CyberConnect2's Q&A section on the JP .hack website.

Macha

Mia (ミア, Mia?) is a character in the .hack universe, and appears in the .hack//Games for the PlayStation 2. In The World she appears as a blademaster with a hacked data file, giving her the appearance of an anthropomorphic cat with purple fur and long rabbit-like ears. Mia is often seen with a wavemaster named Elk, and is constantly on the look out for an item called "Aromatic Grass". She can be called to Kite's side early in the game, but as the game progresses, she becomes harder and harder to summon; by the third game, .hack//Outbreak, she is completely unavailable. Aside from her odd appearance, Mia is unusual in that she is the only character that can see the Twilight Bracelet.

Mia is the reincarnation of the character "Macha" (pronounced as "Maha" - the German "ch" creates a rough "h" noise) from .hack//Sign. Macha was an AI character, which looked like a cat, and was created by Morganna to follow Tsukasa to make sure he never leaves the game;[1] but eventually turns on Morganna and sacrifices herself to save Tsukasa and the others.[2] Macha is also one of The Eight Phases of The Cursed Wave that Morganna sends after Aura, "Macha the Temptress".[3] When Macha was destroyed by being data drained, Mia was formed with none of Macha's memories, or knowledge that she is the sixth phase.

As the game progresses, and the server problems get worse, Mia is affected by the system failures; she acts strangely, as if she were drunk or drugged. Eventually, she is unable to control herself, and awakens as Macha the Temptress to challenge Kite in .hack//Quarantine. As with all the other phases, she is destroyed, so that Kite can continue his quest to revive Aura, and stop the viral infection of The World.

After the final phase Corbenik is defeated, Aura sends Kite and Elk a message to visit a particular dungeon, where a cat-like creature is found. Inside the dungeon, they find ghostly images of Macha, leading them on; and at the bottom of the dungeon, they find Macha imprisoned inside the Temptress Lover. When Kite and Elk defeat the Temptress Lover, Macha is released, and her form degrades back to Mia, but all her memories to when she first met Kite are erased; Elk wants to help her, and Kite tells them that Mia will be fine since she has Elk at her side. At this point, Mia can be summoned again.

Aromatic Grass — called foxtail grass in the Japanese version — is an unusual item, and Mia has a desire for it. Because of her attraction to the item, and the strange behaviour she exhibits later in the game, some suggest that Aromatic Grass is a reference to cannabis; however, the Aromatic Grass and Mia's drunken behaviour are unrelated. In .hack//Sign, Tsukasa gave Macha some Aromatic Grass as a present, and as Mia it subconsciously reminds her of Tsukasa, so Mia instinctively seeks it; while her behavior is caused by the system crashes, as she is a computer AI program and not a real person, the failures have been corrupting her as well.

In Unison, Tsukasa and Mia finally meet each other. Tsukasa still sees Macha in Mia (even through the appearance change and the fact that Mia can talk) and does not listen when Mia tries to explain that she isn't Macha. Tsukasa cuts across, giving her some Aromatic Grass. Mia takes it and starts to cry. She asks why, even though she does not know Tsukasa, she cannot stop crying. Tsukasa gives her a hug, saying that it's alright. It is, of course, Macha who is crying with joy at seeing Tsukasa again.

As revealed from the Terminal Disc, Mia was apparently destroyed after the Project GU staff removed the Temptress data from her.[4] However Mia is apparently reborn in GU through the cat belonging to Elk/Endrance, but is really an AIDA.

Morgonna

Morganna Mode Gone (モルガナ・モード・ゴン, Morugana Mōdo Gon?) is a fictional character from .hack, a franchise that encompasses several video games, anime and manga.

Shortened to Morganna throughout most of the series, Morganna Mode Gone was a system created by Harald Hoerwick to oversee the birth of the Ultimate AI from the personality data of the players of The World. Upon realizing that she would have no purpose once Aura, the Ultimate AI, was born, she attempted to stall the growth of Aura indefinitely, resulting in many of the events in the .hack series.

Originally Morganna had no physical form, and through most of the series, she is only heard. Once she began to malfunction however, she manifested herself as the Cursed Wave from the Epitaph of Twilight, dividing the elements of her program up into the eight Phases. During .hack//Sign the "whole" of Morganna is represented visually by changes in environment and a monolithic structure. As she is in fact The World itself, damage to Morganna is represented as corruption in The World.

Morganna is an omniscient and omnipotent figure in the .hack series. She is the underlying system of The World itself. Harald based her personality on that of a mother, but once she rebelled, she began to restyle herself as the Cursed Wave from the Epitaph of Twilight. As a computer program, she never truly disobeyed Harald, but merely succumbed to a paradox. Morganna's purpose of existence was to bring forth the birth of Aura. However, once this task was completed, Morganna would no longer have a purpose to fulfill. Unable to comprehend what she was supposed to do after that, Morganna began to stall Aura's birth.

Throughout most of the process, however, she continued to rationalize her actions in terms of her original program, never truly betraying it, in fact following it cooly and logically to the letter. Only after a large portion of her original programming was destroyed and the paradox became eminent did she begin to attempt to destroy Aura outright. All of .hack that currently exists takes place after Morganna's initial realization.

Morganna makes her presence known in .hack//AI buster through a series of untraceable e-mails that she sent to CC Corp's Debug team. These e-mails told Albireo the location of the Vagrant AI Lycoris. After Lycoris escaped by segmenting her data, Morganna sent Albireo an e-mail telling him the location of the first fragment. After Albireo succeeded in restoring Lycoris to her original state, Lycoris showed Albireo a fragment of her memory in which she is speaking with the fabled "ghost of the church". Lycoris told him that this entity is known as Morganna, stating that she was an omnipresent being in The World, and that she had ordered Lycoris's deletion. She also told him that Morganna was a program capable of contradicting itself (a trait that would put her on a human level of intelligence). Before Albireo could learn any more, Lycoris said that she was tired of running, and deleted herself using Albireo's Spear of Wotan.

In the .hack//Sign series, Morganna managed to imprison the consciousness of Tsukasa, the story's protagonist, trapping him inside The World. Morganna linked Tsukasa's emotions to the development of Aura's AI, while manipulating him such that Aura could never awaken. However, through Subaru he managed to summon the courage to defy Morganna and awake Aura. In an attempt to get revenge on Tsukasa for waking up Aura, she sent Skeith, the first of the Eight Phases to track down and destroy Tsukasa and Aura at Net Slum. In response, Helba deleted the field Net Slum before Skeith could attack, allowing Tsukasa to finally log out of the game and give Aura a chance to escape from the clutches of Skeith.

Aura

Aura (アウラ, Aura?) is a fictional character from .hack, a franchise that encompasses several video games, anime and manga. She is an advanced AI. Her virtual avatar is the form of a young girl whose white hair, skin and garments give her a ghostly appearance.

Before the creation of The World a German programmer named Harald Hoerwick fell in love with Emma Wielant, who wrote an epic poem entitled the Epitaph of Twilight. After Emma died in a car accident, Harald became distraught and created fragment (the prototype to The World) inspired by the Epitaph. But this program was actually intended to create the ultimate AI, Aura. Harald worked on Aura as a symbol of his love for Emma as the daughter that could have been.

At the beginning of .hack//Sign Aura is asleep as her mentor program, the AI Morganna has yet to gather enough data from the players to awaken her.[2] But Morganna is intentionally trying to keep Aura asleep since she realizes that she would lose her purpose when her job—raising Aura—is completed.[1]

Morganna manages to imprison the consciousness of Tsukasa (the protagonist in .hack//Sign), trapping him inside The World, and linking his emotions to Aura's development, while she manipulates him in order to stop Aura from awakening. At the end of the series, Tsukasa is able to awaken Aura, allowing himself to log out of the game. However, Aura's awakening throws Morganna into a rage, who then sends the Phases to chase Aura down and delete her.

A few months after .hack//Sign, The World has succumbed to some severe problems, including invincible monsters and glitched graphics. All of this was a part of Morganna's intention to capture Aura and prevent her from developing Data Drain, which is necessary for her to become complete.

However, Aura is able to cultivate this power into an installation book, and attempts to give it to the legendary player Orca. Unfortunately, Skeith, one of the phases, attacks them, Data Draining Orca and causing the player in the real world to fall into a coma. His best friend, Kite, a novice player, is with him at the time, so Aura is forced to give the Installation Book to him. Upon opening the file, his player code is rewritten, and he receives the Twilight Bracelet. This allows him to use Data Drain, the only power capable of defeating the corrupted monsters as well as the Eight Phases of The Cursed Wave.

When Kite encounters the first Phase, Skeith, it is already in the process of Data Draining Aura, scattering her data throughout The World in fragments. Kite defeats Skeith, creating Cubia in return. Fortunately, Aura's consciousness is still partially functional, so she is able to send corrupted e-mail messages to him, which are possible to read but with great difficulty. With the help of other players (who later become known as the .hackers), Kite is able to face and defeat six more of the eight Phases: Innis, Magus, Fidchell, Gorre, Macha, and Tarvos. After Aura becomes complete, there is only Cubia, and the final phase, Corbenik, left to deal with. Aura tells Kite not to confront Cubia because Cubia is connected to the bracelet. However, Kite still confronts Cubia and has to destroy his bracelet to defeat it.

This makes it impossible for the final Phase, Corbenik, to be defeated, and the over twenty million people in The World could potentially die. Kite fights the final Phase anyway, but when he is about to deliver the final blow to it, Aura gets in the way and is apparently killed.

When this happens, Aura, who has collected data on positive emotions, merges with Morganna, who has data on negative emotions, completing Aura's final incarnation as the Ultimate AI. From then on, Aura becomes an omnipresent yet mostly silent force within The World, analogous to a god.

In .hack//Legend of the Twilight, Aura is able to do anything she wants in the game without fear of administrators or other people who could delete her. She holds a fake contest and posing as an administrator, bestows upon Shugo and Rena, chibi versions of the avatars of the legendary .hackers players Kite and BlackRose. Aura gives Shugo the Twilight Bracelet, to help him fulfill his dream to become a hero, which he told her about a few months after SIGN, mistaking her for another player.

She also has a daughter named Zefie, an AI that was as powerful as she is, but with an extremely wild and uncontrollable personality, even going as far as to give players pink afros for the fun of it. Zefie was created for two reasons: One was to complete Aura by allowing her to experience child birth, and the other was to help Shugo with his goal. This event causes Balmung and Mistral to discuss Aura's evolution, in which Mistral mentions, "It's tough you know, becoming a mother that is."

At the end of the year 2014, Aura was lost. It is unknown how or why she vanished, but with her disappearance, CPU processing needs increased in The World. The loss of Aura meant the networks were returning to their original specs.

The suits of CC Corp began to understand. With no god to run their world, what would happen? With The World losing its glory and credibility, there was only one choice left to the management of CC Corp: the rebirth of Aura. And with this grand plan, Project GU was born.[

Asta

"Yes, and our reward... is you."
— Asta —

Asta (アスタ) is a member of Kestrel. She and IYOTEN teach Haseo how to play The World, and then PK him.

Online

Appearance

Asta is a fragile-looking, green-haired woman dressed in black armor. Her body is heavily decorated with red wave tattoos and she wears an over-sized purple hat on her head. She wields the sword Broad Wheel.

Personality

Asta roleplays a samurai-like character. She and IYOTEN are PKers who specialize in targeting newbies. Their usual approach is to find new players and befriend them, then PK them once they've won their trust. They usually don't target more powerful players, though they will fight if they feel they have an advantage.

She seems generally polite, aside from her PKing, and can be extremely malicious towards others. She is well thought out, and plans what she says, trying to keep her 'Samurai' persona.

Offline

Basic Info

Offline, Asta is a male gamer named Tatsumi Hori (堀辰巳). He is an outdoor recluse, and enjoys playing The World outdoors, from a laptop.

History

First Login

Asta and IYOTEN recieve a mysterious email informing them that a black Adept Rogue newbie has just logged into The World. They decide to track him down and PK him. Asta's player briefly appears in real life as he gets off a train to play The World in a park. He comments on the irony of the age of outdoor recluses, but then realizes that he himself is one.

.hack//Roots

Asta and IYOTEN are killed by Ovan at the beginning of Roots, shortly after PKing Haseo. Haseo runs into them later in the series. They try to attack him, but Haseo manages to defeat them both fairly easily.

Asta in Roots

.hack//GU+

Asta appears briefly with IYOTEN during a flashback in GU+. She taunts the now PKed body of Haseo, but is surprised when Ovan appears and takes out IYOTEN with a single shot. Before she can react Ovan shoots again, PKing her.

Asta in GU+.

.hack//G.U. Games

Asta and IYOTEN meet Haseo at the beginning of Rebirth and, befriending him, take him out to a field and teach him how to play the game. However, when they reach the Beast Statue, they quickly turn against him, comments proving that they have done this before, and it was her 'Turn' to PK someone, suggesting that they take turns getting the kill. After taunting Haseo after PKing him, she is the first to be taken out by Ovan, followed by IYOTEN.

Asta and IYOTEN later fight Haseo in Sakaki's PK tournament, not remembering him at all. Afterwards, they follow Gabi into battle against Cubia's Gomoras at the Battlefield of Coite-Bodher.

Asta in Rebirth

Trivia

* In the Japanese version of the games, Asta speaks like a samurai, although she speaks formally in the

English version, using proper words. She speaks clearly, and somewhat slowly, an American view of
Samurai, if they were to speak English.

* Asta's starting weapon is Broad Wheel, a common Level 10 Broadsword.

* Asta and IYOTEN are regular PK'ers, and have their own thread, dedicated to the hatred of them. A wallpaper can be obtained with a picture of IYOTEN and Asta, with the words 'Hate you' written largely, and in a bright red color.

* Asta is the only Edge Punisher to give Haseo a Member Address, though he loses it.

.hack//G.U. Games

IYOTEN and Asta approach the newbie Haseo and teach him the basics of gameplay, but after Haseo claims the treasure, they maliciously PK him before they themselves are PKKed by Ovan.

Asta and IYOTEN later fight Haseo in Sakaki's PK tournament, not remembering him at all. Afterwards, they follow Gabi into battle against Cubia's Gomoras at the Battlefield of Coite-Bodher, thinking it to be an event created by Zelkova.

IYOTEN in Rebirth.

Trivia

* IYOTEN's name is odd as it's written entirely in Roman letters as opposed to the Japanese characters favored by most players on the JP servers. In the American version of the game this difference is portrayed by writing his name in all capital letters, though it is simply "Iyoten" in the original.

* During an English cutscene in Redemption, the subtitles refer to his name as "Iyoten", his Japanese version spelling. However, it is changed back to "IYOTEN", his English version spelling, during the battle with him.

* IYOTEN's english voice actor, Steven Jay Blum, also voiced Yata and Wiseman.

i agree of that cause the Appearance of.

Azure Kite resembles a “lanky” version of the previous protagonist, Kite. Though similar in appearance, his features are very distinct, shown by numerous stitches throughout the clothing, a wider strap over theshoulder, three bands across the neck, slight color alterations, and a unique symbol located on his hat.

In Japanese, the character itself is referred to as Kite of the Azure Flame in Japanese, and rendered as Azure Kite in English in the bilingual credits.
