also i forget to type my other comments that The beginning of the game details in the battle between Haseo an Azure Kite in the cathedral, sometime after he also presented in a video by Yata, appearing before Three players and effectively data draining one, showing his ability to move freely throughout The World, without The use Chaos Gates. Azure Kite appears once more during the end of Rebirth after Haseo an they Others locate Atoli within in the strange room on other Side of Morrigu Barrow Wall, The room itself exists Outside of Areas created and observed by system administrators. Perhaps Detecting system abnormalities Within The field he Prepares to resolve they situation an however, Haseo alongside in his party Pi and Kuhn confront Azure Kite deciding to combat him. A battle arises leaving him damaged by the three. Near defeat, Azure Kite Uses Drain Heart restoring his data, and from there he transforms into The Azure Flame God, a being similar to an avatar. Haseo then activates his own avatar Skeith and the fight begins. Azure Flame God is defeated and reverts to Azure Kite, his azure colored data revealed, he breaks into data fragments removing him from the area. Afterwards Atoli is attacked by AIDA, possibly the same being Azure Kite was detecting.

Throughout the majority of volume two, Reminisce, Azure Kite is inactive, recuperating within a unique structure similar to a coffin. Regardless of his condition, he does appear at various points alongside Azure Balmung and Azure Orca as they defeat AIDA on the mirror server and later during Haseo’s battle against Sirius. Nearing the end of the game, he recovers and is free from his casket. The Azure Knights then mobilize to seemly aid Haseo’s party in the battle against Sakaki, but they are halted by Ovan in front of the Sign leading to the Keel Mountains of Briona Gideon. The Three Azure Knights rush forth to attack; Ovan then unlocks the barrel on his arm, and the scene cuts. Later Azure Kite severed arm is thrown before Haseo from Ovan whom offers it as a “gift,” soon after he reveals himself as the true Tri-Edge.

In the third volume, Redemption, Azure Kite heals from his previous battle against Ovan far quicker than before. Soon after the three Azure Knights locate and finish off Sakaki after he falls through Avatar Space into an Outer Dungeon. Later when Haseo, Yata, and Aina arrive at the Hulle Granz Cathedral, Azure Kite, Azure Balmung, and Azure Orca appear in an attempt to intercept them. As Aina reads from the Epitaph of Twilight a brief skirmish occurs revealing that Azure Kite is virtually invincible, however before the fight could continue any further Aura inhabits Aina’s character commanding the knights to stand down. Upon Aura’s order, he then hands over his weapons to Haseo and leaves.

Sanjuro

Sanjuro (砂嵐 三十郎) is a Heavy Blade in the .hack//Games, and the mentor of Shugo during the .hack//Legend of the Twilight anime.

Online

Appearance

Sanjuro is a Heavy Blade modeled after a Ronin, or wandering Samurai. He is a rugged looking warrior of indeterminate age who wears dark platemail on his upper body, and a Hakama (a sort of Japanese skirt) around his legs. His wave symbols are visible on part of his face, as well as on his clothing. He has an eyepatch over his right eye. Since he is modeled after a Samurai, he exclusively wields Katana type weapons.

Personality

Sanjuro tries his best to act the role of the wise and honorable warrior. And sees himself as a sort of wandering hero, traveling throughout The World protecting the weak. He has a great deal of hate for PKers, who he considers "honorless dogs". He is especially helpful to people visiting the JP servers from English speaking servers. Though he was still a bit of a newbie in his first appearance, his encounter with Kite and his assistance during the Twilight Incident made him into a very powerful player. He is likely one of the most powerful Heavy Blades in the game. He is close with most of the .hackers and a very good friend of Hotaru, who considers him as a mentor.

Offline

Basic Info

Sanjuro is actually a Japanese teacher from South Dakota. He plays on the JP servers of The World in order to improve his skill at the language by speaking with others who are fluent in it. In the Legend of the Twilight anime, it was stated that Hotaru is one of his students, but being part of the anime, this is non-canon (in the novels it's stated that Hotaru lives in Boston).
[edit] Hobbies

Sanjuro is a big fan of Samurai films, especially those starring the famous actor Toshiro Mifune. His favorite movies are "The Hidden Fortress" and "Yojimbo" the movie that he took his character's name from.

History

.hack//Games

Sanjuro is an optional character, and only plays a small role in the .hack games. He first meets Kite while searching for a rare Katana, though he was unable to find the weapon himself Kite was able to locate it and gave it to him as a gift. In exchange, Sanjuro gave Kite his member address. His other missions usually involve locating rare weapons of some form or another, generally a Katana. Like most of Kite's party he was present during the final fight against Corbenik, and was temporarily placed in a coma by the Phase's Drain Heart attack.

.hack//Another Birth

In Another Birth, Sanjuro accompanies BlackRose and Natsume to the field Δ Hideous Someone's Giant where they battle against the rare Parasite Dragon. The event reminds BlackRose that The World is still a game, and that she shouldn't spend all her time online worrying about what's going on around her.

Sanjuro and Natsume fighting the Parasite Dragon.

.hack//Firefly

Sanjuro's role in AI Buster 2 is in the short story "Firefly". He runs into Hotaru in the root town of Mac Anu. Realizing that she's an American player as well, he assists her with an event she's unlocked, and fights off a group of PKers who try to attack her. With his help, Hotaru is able to finish the event. They exchange member addresses and he encourages her to keep logging onto the JP servers.

.hack//Legend of the Twilight

Anime

Sanjuro is a major character in the Legend of the Twilight Anime. He first appears when he is forced to save Shugo and Hotaru from a group of monsters they ran into while searching for medicine for Hotaru's Grunty. Though he mistakes Shugo for Kite at first, he quickly realizes his mistake. Later he is sought out by Balmung who asks him to train Shugo, as the Twilight Bracelet he received from Aura will be needed to help bring balance back to The World. Sanjuro accepts and takes Shugo on as an apprentice. He also assists Shugo in many of the battles that occur later in the series.

Manga

Sanjuro only has a small role in the Legend of the Twilight Manga. While he is mentioned by Hotaru a few times, he only appears in one scene where he meets Hotaru in a tavern. He has no speaking parts in the manga.

Trivia

* Sanjuro joins Kite's party at level 15.
* Sanjuro's original weapon is the Zero Katana, a level 1 weapon. It is later replaced by the Kotetsu Sword, a rare level 8 weapon.
* When introducing himself he uses the surname "Sunaarashi", translating to "Sandstorm", however his character name in the English version is just "Sanjuro"

Sanjuro's Mission Areas

* Infection:
o Δ Hideous Destroyer's Far Thunder: Where Sanjuro joins Kite
* Mutation:
o Λ Bitter Hot-Blooded Sand Trap: Sanjuro has found another blade and this time he'll reward Kite with something worth having.
* Outbreak:
o Σ Soaring Sky Madness Compass: Off to get the Tonosama Sword for good ole Sanjuro.

— Nanase —

Online

She is one of the other members of Canard a guild, whose members include Gaspard and her secret crush Silabus and also maintains a fierce rivalry with Alkaid who she has sworn to surpass. One of her biggest mile stones is learning to never give up, even if she knows that she's going to lose.

Gaspard

"This isn't "The World" I know! I hate it!"
— Gaspard —

Gaspard (ガスパー) is a character in .hack//G.U. and member of the guild Canard.

Online

Appearance

Gaspard appears as a short, round, pink-furred, dog-like character, wearing magician's robes.
Personality

Gaspard plays The World to have fun. He sees no reason players should be killing each other, and occasionally bursts into tears when the world around him doesn't resemble The World he knows and loves. He is also quite shy, and refuses to take part in Arena battles. However he can be brave when people close to him are threatened.

Offline

Basic info

Offline, Gaspard is a middle school student named Kouta Maki who lives in Hokkaido. He goes to a cram school to study math and English. Slightly overweight (nearly 200 pounds) and 5'9", sports are his worst subject.

Hobbies

Gaspard is an expert at card games, including Crimson VS. He is also a fan of fatty foods like hamburgers and soda pop, though the diet on which his parents have placed him gives him few chances to enjoy these foods. He has also participated in Sumo wrestling.

History

Gaspard appears in Roots as a member of Canard. Extremely attached to Kuhn, he was heartbroken when Kuhn announced his decision to leave the guild, not understanding the reasons behind it.

Gaspard in roots

.hack//Alcor

Canard finds itself in trouble when Silabus becomes a target of the PKer Bordeaux. Though afraid, Gaspard decides to do his best to help Silabus out, and tries to encourage Nanase, another member, to do the same. However, when Nanase refuses to help Silabus, Gaspard goes off to save him alone. Locating Silabus, Gaspard finds that Bordeaux has already PKed him. Approaching Gaspard, Bordeaux tells him that the entire attack was a plot by Nanase, who had been a member of Kestrel before she joined Canard. Shortly afterwards, he tells both Silabus and Alkaid what Bordeaux said. Though Silabus refuses to believe it, Alkaid confronts Nanase about it and causes her to leave Canard.

When Silabus discovers what had happened from Kuhn, he sets off with Gaspard to find Nanase and bring her back.

Gaspard in roots

.hack//G.U. Games

Silabus and Gaspard first meet the freshly de-leveled Haseo when Gaspard crashes into him in Mac Anu. Under the impression that he is a newbie, they offer their assistance to Haseo, taking him to a dungeon to level up. Haseo, believing that cooperating with them would be the quickest way to regain his power, goes along with them but is unable to convince them that he really is the PKK known as the "Terror of Death" and not simply 'role-playing' the title.

This changes near the end of the dungeon, however, when Bordeaux, Negimaru, and Grein ambush Haseo and attempt to PK him. They are scared off by Pi, however, and Haseo's party is able to return home.

Later on, Gaspard opens and manages Carnard's guild shop, having Haseo fill in for him occasionally, but becomes worried when people buying items at the shop start being stalked and PKed by Bordeaux's lackeys. He convinces Haseo and Kuhn to go arbitrate the situation with Gabi, Guildmaster of Kestrel.

.hack//GU+

After hearing that the infamous Terror of Death had challenged the Arena Champion Endrance to a fight, Gaspard and Silabus traveled to Lumina Cloth to watch the battle. Afterwards were attacked by several PKers from Kestrel but were saved when several of the Captains from Moon Tree appeared and drove the PKers off.

Trivia

* Gaspard and Silabus appeared in several short comics in .hack//G.U. The World. A running gag in the
comics was that Gaspard was so cute that nobody, not even Azure Kite could bring themselves to PK him
* Canard's mascot and shopkeeper is 4'4" (134 cm) in height, making him the shortest character in GU.
* Gaspard's English Voice Actor, Dave Wittenberg also voiced Sora, Matsu, and some minor characters from Legend of the Twilight.
* Gaspard was once champion of Crimson VS.
* In the real world he has a crush on a girl named Yayoi

Sora

"First I'll get the treasure chest, and then I'll get you, and then I'll get them all!"
— Sora —

Sora (楚良) is a powerful Twin Blade character. A Player Killer, he is an outlaw, hated by many.

Online

Appearance

Sora has a tall, slender figure, befitting of the nimble Twin Blade class. His outfit is a dark navy blue with purple stripes about his body and a few leather guards for protection. He has forest green hair, trimmed short in the back but hanging down in the front, with a purple bandanna tied around his forehead. His weapons are thin, long katars that extend and retract from a metal guard on either wrist.

Personality

As a player killer, Sora enjoys hunting players down and demanding their Member Addresses in exchange for their lives. Bear makes a joke about him hunting down attractive female PCs after he hunts down BT. He often makes comments about "being friends", but his true intentions are not well understood.

Offline

Sora's player is a young boy in the 4th grade named Ryou Misaki (三崎亮). It is unknown if his mind has aged in the long period that transpires between being struck into a coma at the end of SIGN and his release at the end of the Games. His unchanged attitude and habits suggest no mental maturing. After awakening from his coma, he loses his memories of The World. His parents hide the entire ordeal from him, and as a result he forgets he ever even played.

History

In the .hack//SIGN series, Sora frequently tangles with Crim, a Long Arm with incredible skill and power, and former member of the Crimson Knights. He, too, seeks the fabled Key of the Twilight, but his true intentions in doing so are never revealed. After Tsukasa is captured and detained by the Crimson Knights, Sora breaks in during Tsukasa's conversation with Subaru, and aids him in fleeing the Knights. While he makes no immediate demands, he reveals that he sees Tsukasa as the strongest link to the Key of the Twilight, and so helped him escape in efforts to further his search.

Afterwards, he arranges a temporary agreement with BT, who agrees to trade information regarding Tsukasa in exchange for information from him. He helps BT and the others contact the hacker Helba with the aid of one of his "friends". He later follows BT and Crim into a Chaos Gate hidden at Hulle Granz Cathedral, though Crim prevents Sora from making contact with the AI Harald hidden there, starting a rivalry which lasts throughout the series.

Following the events in the Twilight's Eye, Sora finds himself without information. To amuse himself he starts a small alliance between himself, BT, and Silver Knight who is desperate to revive the now disbanded Crimson Knights. He leads Silver Knight to an area containing a Data Bug, but flees the battlefield, leaving Silver Knight to deal with it on his own.

Later in the series, Sora follows Macha into Morganna Mode Gone's lair, and lays his eyes upon the sleeping Aura, realizing that he has found the Key of the Twilight. Sora appears to ally himself with Morganna, and proceeds to cause more trouble for the other players.

In the series' final episode, Sora betrays Morganna, buying Tsukasa and the others time to escape. After briefly taunting Morganna, Sora attempts to gate out, but fails. Morganna summons Skeith, the first of the 8 Phases. Skeith then performs Data Drain upon Sora, imprisoning him in his wand, and throwing Sora's player into a coma in the real world.

Ryou Misaki as he falls into a coma.

.hack//ZERO

Since the last time he was seen in SIGN, Sora has changed in many ways. Red bandages around his head and body have been added to his character design, along with a ragged cloak. He displays a number of different personalities - from the cheerfully malicious PK of SIGN, to an injured amnesiac suffering both physically and mentally, to an utterly inhuman monster which violates the basic principles of the game. He generally lurks in fields with keywords such as "Betrayed" or "Nothingness", and has a habit of vanishing in a flash of light without warning. He is also frequently at the Hulle Granz Cathedral, though he claims to hate the place.

Sora meets Aura twice in ZERO. The first time, she does something which seems to cause him extreme pain. The second time, Skeith takes control, warping Sora's PC body almost beyond recognition. It attacks her mercilessly, and she does not fight back because she believes that Carl doesn't want her to.

Sora as a Vagrant AI in .hack//ZERO.

ack//Liminality

Mai Minase catches a glimpse of the Sora/Skeith AI while exploring the system with Tokuoka. Sora fully transforms into Skeith to attack them. Fortunately, Mai, with her trained ears, is able to notice the change and leave the system before he reaches them. She is able to rescue Tokuoka as well by forcibly removing his headset.

Skeith emerges from Sora in Liminality.

.hack//Games

In .hack//OUTBREAK, Kite finds a set of keywords on the board where a player reports to have seen a red wand. This field is in Λ Stalking Betrayed Nothingness, but suspiciously contains monsters of levels higher than the server normally allows.

At the bottom of the Dungeon, Kite runs into the red wand that was mentioned on the board, which is actually Skeith's wand, the Phase that was defeated in .hack//Infection. Sora's chuckle echoes, and the wand disappears and reveals Sora. Kite senses Sora saying "Thank you," and is rewarded with Sora's Blades.

In the final battle against Corbenik's 2nd form in .hack//Quarantine, Corbenik is encased in a "Supreme Defense" shield, which blocks all physical and magical attacks. After a few moments' futile efforts at attacking, Aura appears, and informs Kite that all the comatose players are helping him in his battle. Sora appears, as well as other familiar characters that had been sent into comas, and proceeds to crack Corbenik's shield, allowing Kite and his party to continue the battle and ultimately defeat Corbenik, the final Phase, awakening all the coma victims and restoring order to The World.

Sora and Skeith in CyberConnect2's concept art

.hack//Unison

Sora's first appearance in Unison is an encounter with Mistral. He demands her Member Address but Silver Knight and Crim appear. Sora then runs away after being challenged by all three of them. Later, Sora shows up at Net Slum and begins to spy on the other players as they are dancing. Tsukasa sees Sora and walks over to him and finds him crying. Tsukasa then invites him to the party to get him to have fun and he soon joins the festivities and is liked by everyone.

.hack//GIFT

Sora is the self-appointed "comic relief" in GIFT. He randomly appears to annoy and taunt people throughout the episode. Eventually his antics become too much for Crim, who fights him while suspended above the ground by wires. After a stray attack hits Balmung he uses the confusion to abandon Crim and slip away. Unfortunately he is challenged by Piros who says he's going to forcibly change his hairstyle to a "Piros Cut", a prospect that terrifies Sora. Later he peeps on several of the SIGN girls bathing in a hot spring, along with Crim, Silver Knight, and Bear.

Sora in .hack//GIFT.

End of The World

Sora is mentioned in the journal of Jun Bansyoya. Apparently the connection he had with Skeith was used as the basis for the Epitaph-PCs created by Jyotaro Amagi for Project G.U. Sora was given as an example of a possible "candidate" for Avatar Skeith, but CC Corp was unable to find him, as he had stopped playing The World by that point.

.hack//G.U.

See Haseo.

Trivia

* .hack//QUARANTINE reveals Sora's tendency towards "1337-speak," a practice of replacing letters in a sentence with numbers and symbols, as well as using net-shorthand, both of which betray his identity as a young boy. However, this is a trait he displays only in the English version of the game. As Japanese characters hardly allow for any likening to numbers on the keyboard, this is obviously Bandai of America taking no small amount of creative license. His speech in the Japanese version is even more idiosyncratic, in ways that are completely untranslatable.
* In ZERO, Sora tells Carl that he named his character after Sora Kawai, a famous poet and student of Matsuo Basho. Later, when Carl accuses him of lying, he explains that he changed the kanji to look cooler.
* Sora makes an appearance in the Legend of the Twilight manga behind a wall looking at Komiyan III, and flashing a "V" sign in a group picture with Elk and Mia
* Sora's Japanese and English voice actors also voiced Matsu.
* In addition his English Voice Actor voiced Gaspard and several characters from Legend of the Twilight.
* Sora's blades are called Last Betrayal, a rare Level.99 Twin Blade weapon.

"Get stronger. Consume all your happiness and sadness, and use that as your stepping stone."
— Ovan —

Ovan (オーヴァン) is a powerful Steam Gunner and the former leader of the Twilight Brigade. He is also the Epitaph User titled "The Rebirth," being able to summon Avatar Corbenik.

Online

Appearance

Ovan is dressed mostly in blue tones, with traces of leather scattered throughout his outfit coupled with a long, flowing blue scarf. He wears a pair of orange sunglasses and his left arm lies encased in a huge metal cylinder equipped with a lock. His hair is short and is blue like his clothes. According to an interview, Ovan's character was designed to be the exact opposite of Haseo. Ovan is a mysterious adult, while Haseo is a teenage-looking youth. Ovan's white and blue color scheme runs perfectly contrary to Haseo's black and red.

Personality

Ovan is a very mysterious person. Generally quiet, when he does speak, everybody listens. He is capable of commanding the attention of everybody around him with little effort. He seems to know quite a bit about events in The World R:2, though his quiet nature makes it unclear exactly how much knowledge he actually has. He frequently disappears from the game for long stretches of time; while he says it's related to his job in the real world, whether that is true or not is up for debate. As a Steam Gunner of an extremely high level, he has progressed beyond having to worry about trivial matters such as leveling or PKers, leaving him plenty of time to work on his long term goals, whatever they may be. One thing to note, though he never seems to lie, he has the habit of not giving a straight answer, leaving others to make their own judgments.

Offline

Ovan's player is named Masato Indou. He has met with Shino, and seems to keep in contact with her outside of the game. He also has a younger sister named Aina.

Masato Indou in G.U.+

History

hack//Roots

In Roots, Ovan is the Guildmaster of the Twilight Brigade, a Guild searching for the legendary Key of the Twilight. Ovan rescues Haseo after he is PKed. His interest in Haseo soon draws the attention of Naobi, the Guildmaster of TaN, who wonders why a powerful character like Ovan would be interested in a newbie. Naobi sends several of his guild members to investigate Haseo, and try to sway him into TaN. A war starts between the two Guilds, as both TaN and the Twilight Brigade fight over Haseo, possession of several Virus Cores, and the location of the Key of the Twilight.

Eventually, after a discovery by Haseo, the Twilight Brigade finds what they believe is the hiding place of the Key of the Twilight. In actuality, the entire thing was a trap by Naobi, who managed to capture Ovan so that he could explore his character data, which he said was much larger then a normal PC's should be. Ovan, who had expected something like this, had been gathering information about TaN's illegal activities. After his disappearance, his second in command, Shino, used the evidence to get TaN disbanded by the system admins. Despite the destruction of their Guild, Naobi and his assistant Ender disposed themselves of their PC bodies, and revealed their true forms, that of the System Administrators Yata and Pi. With Ovan under their control, they began a complete scan of Ovan's character data, eventually investigating the seal on his left arm. Despite Ovan's protests they succeeded in breaking the seal, which exploded in a flash of light. Somehow this allowed Ovan to escape from their control, allowing him to return to the normal portions of The World R:2.

Ovan returned to find his guild disbanded. Only two former members, Haseo and Tabby, remained as players, and more unfortunately his close friend Shino was revealed to have been attacked by Tri-Edge and turned into a Lost One. Spurning contact with his former allies, Ovan began to wander the system, encountering the powerful player Taihaku in his travels. As he wandered, Ovan was trailed by Azure Kite, who eventually attacked him at Briona Gwydion the Dragonbein Range. Using his left arm, which apparently contained an AIDA, Ovan was able to fight evenly against the powerful Azure Kite, forcing him to retreat. Though Kite had been driven off, Ovan realized that he hadn't been defeated permanently. After Haseo had grown into the powerful PKKer known as "The Terror of Death," Ovan called Haseo to Arche Koeln Waterfall, telling him that Tri-Edge would soon appear in Hulle Granz Cathedral, and that defeating him might bring Shino back. Being told Ovan would meet up with him there, Haseo traveled to the Cathedral as directed, where he encountered Azure Kite. While Haseo fought Kite, Ovan called Phyllo to the Falls, where he revealed the truth about Tri-Edge and that Ovan was the one responsible for Shino's coma. Though Phyllo was shocked by the revelation, he promised to take Ovan's secret to the grave. Looking at the falls, Ovan quietly begged Haseo to get stronger, strong enough to kill him and restore order to The World.

.hack//GnU

Ovan has a small cameo with Haseo when several members of Moon Tree spy on a meeting between them at the Arche Koeln Waterfall.

.hack//GU+

After a long drought of contact, Ovan sends an e-mail to Haseo, telling him to return to Hulle Granz Cathedral and that he'd find what he was looking for. There, he meets with Haseo, informing him of Shino's state in the real world. Ovan leaves shortly before the appearance of Azure Kite. He reappears to watch Haseo's fight with Endrance in the arena.

.hack//G.U. Games

The GU Games begin with Ovan telling Haseo that Tri-Edge was returning to The World, and apparently was to reappear in Hulle Granz Cathedral, "the scene of the crime". Ovan assured Haseo that he would meet up with him there, and Haseo immediately headed to the Cathedral. After getting defeated and Data Drained by Azure Kite, the last thing Haseo saw before losing consciousness was Ovan approaching him from the Cathedral doors.

Later, in an arena fight, Haseo, fighting a losing battle against Bordeaux and her cronies, felt his avatar arriving. He spots Ovan in the crowd, causing Haseo to activate Skeith for the first time in a devastating attack that temporarily placed Bordeaux's player in a coma. At the ceremony celebrating Haseo becoming Demon Palace Emperor, Ovan told Atoli about Shino, manipulating her into thinking that Haseo was using her just because she resembled Shino, and instructed her to investigate the Sign at Morrigu Barrow Wall to prove herself to Haseo by finding Tri-Edge.

Ovan taught Sakaki about the AIDA, and their ability to control human minds and amplify emotions, as well as their effects in the real world. He also provided Sakaki with items containing AIDA to infect players. When Haseo, Pi, and Atoli finally confront Sakaki, the Azure Knights mobilize to, apparently, help defeat him, but they are thwarted by Ovan, who blocks the way, unlocking his arm.

Ovan as the true Tri-Edge.

Once Sakaki was defeated, Ovan arrived on the scene, giving Haseo Azure Kite's severed arm as a gift. Haseo asked Ovan if he had fought Tri-Edge, to which Ovan responds that that isn't entirely accurate. Breaking the seal on his arm, Ovan revealed a demonic-looking arm hidden under the casket on his body. Using the appendage attached to the arm's shoulder, Ovan proceeded to kill Atoli and Pi with a single hit each. He draws his bayonet while the AIDA infested arm draws its upper appendage and a black axe, and created a second Sign at Briona Gwydion, revealing that he is Tri-Edge. He tells Haseo to meet him at Backtop City Megin Fi, before logging out.

Once Haseo ascends to Megin Fi, he fights Ovan for a while before Ovan summons Corbenik. Haseo summons Skeith, and the two Epitaphs fight before Ovan is defeated, talking about how "this wasn't the death I wanted" and that "perhaps it was too soon after all." Later on, Haseo is seen meeting with Atoli at the Cathedral, when Atoli suddenly becomes shocked at something behind Haseo. Haseo turns to find Ovan standing right behind him, and Ovan tells him to "become strong enough to destroy me!"

Ovan unleashes Corbenik

Near the end of the G.U. Games, Ovan uses his Avatar's "Rebirth" ability, causing the entire internet to reset, in an attempt to purify the network of all AIDA. He then falls into the Sea of Data, and his real world self falls into a coma, though his consciousness continued to aid Haseo in the final fight against Cubia. After completing the newly re-opened Forest of Pain event, Ovan briefly appears to Haseo. #

.hack//G.U. Returner

Ovan sends an email to multiple characters to come to Δ Hidden Forbidden Festival. In the ending, he is seen in a field and reunites with Aina.

Trivia

* The Bayonet Ovan uses in battles is called "Demon Slice" and is a level 78 bayonet equipped with darkness attack and critical +10%, however this is not his Lost Weapon.
* Ovan is referred to as the "Guide to an Uprising" in the electronic diary of Jun Bansyoya. Interim Report 11 on the Terminal Disc is almost entirely devoted to him.
* Ovan is 6'8" (205 cm) tall.
* A poll on CyberConnect2's website shows Ovan as the seventh most popular character in .hack//G.U.
* Ovan is the only Epitaph User who doesn't join Haseo's party in the .hack//G.U. games.

"So... are you satisfied now?"
— Zelkova —

Zelkova (欅) is a male Flick Reaper. He is the Guildmaster and also the captain of the first division of Moon Tree, a guild in The World R:2 which consists of over 1000 pacifists and peace promoters. He is also the master of Net Slum.

Zelkova

Online

Appearance

Zelkova has the appearance of a young boy in white Japanese-styled clothing, with silver hair and golden eyes. He wears a blue obi, and carries an oversized fan as part of his outfit. When engaging in battle, Zelkova takes the fan off, unfolding it to reveal the Goddess Scythe. He also has horns atop his head, which some players say are a cheat, while others claim it's a rare item similar to Balmung's wings.

Personality

The very heart of Moon Tree itself, Zelkova possesses all of the qualities members of the guild strive for. He is kind, compassionate, understanding, and seemingly incapable of anger. He is also unbelievably powerful. Despite this, he lacks any real ambition, and has more fun teaching his members and exploring The World than organizing and managing most aspects of the guild. Sakaki sees this as weakness, and also as a chance for him to extend his own influence. A pacifist, Zelkova forbids his members to PKK unless they themselves or someone under their protection are PKed (with Arena battles the only notable exception). He will, however, forgive anyone who seeks it.

Offline

Basic Info

Nothing is known about Zelkova in the real world. His article in the .hack//G.U. Perfect Guidebook goes so far as to suggest he might not exist offline. When asked about who he is offline, he merely replies "I'm Zelkova."

History

.hack//G.U.+

Zelkova rescues Haseo from Kazumi's Data Drain, and Job Extends him to Xth form.

Zelkova in G.U.+

.hack//G.U. Games

Zelkova is first encountered when Pi and Haseo are investigating an AIDA-infested area at Δ Delicious Past Weed Eater. Near the end of the dungeon, the last remaining AIDA attempts to infect Zelkova, who is exploring the area with Kaede. Pi successfully blocks the AIDA, causing it to infect her instead. After a battle with her Avatar, Haseo is able to Data Drain the AIDA from her, and they part ways with Zelkova and Kaede.

Later, Zelkova asks Kaede to have Atoli bring Haseo and Pi to Moon Tree's @Home so he can thank them for saving him. Although he was unable to see what happened, he was able to understand that he was saved. Atoli at first thinks Haseo is being summoned because he has done something horrible, and is relieved when she finds out the meeting isn't a reprimand. Here, Pi explains to Haseo via party chat how Sakaki's ambitions have split the guild into two groups, and Haseo observes firsthand Sakaki encouraging Zelkova to take leave of his duties as guildmaster.

Later, Zelkova is a spectator in the Arena Tournament. In the battle between Haseo and Matsu, Matsu uses the Flame Sword, a sword he had forbidden himself to use once he joined Moon Tree. Afterwards, Zelkova forgave him for breaking his promise, understanding the fact that fighting an opponent as strong as Haseo had given Matsu the closure he had been seeking for a long time, and that Matsu would never need to break his promise again. Afterwards, Matsu gave the Flame Sword to Haseo. Zelkova later witnesses the battle between Endrance and Haseo, and comments on how although Endrance knew deep in his heart that the cat AIDA he called "Mia" wasn't what he wanted it to be, but he was forcing himself to believe it was anyway.

After the tournament, when all the players were transferred to the AIDA Server, Zelkova followed a request from Raven's guildmaster Yata and ordered his guild to look for distortions on the server. With the help of Zelkova's Guild, G.U. was able to restore the server to its natural state. Later, Sakaki staged a coup d'etat against Zelkova. Using the power of Innis, Atoli was able to PK Zelkova and turn him into a Lost One. Sakaki then turned Moon Tree's @Home into an AIDA server. After Haseo stopped Sakaki, Zelkova returned to normal along with the others. After forgiving Atoli for her actions, he began the hard work of rebuilding Moon Tree alongside Kaede. It was at this point that he revealed Nala's true identity to Haseo, that of G.U. leader Yata.

After this event, however, Moon Tree's @HOME was sealed off. During this time, Zelkova sent Haseo anonymous emails and followed his activities closely. When Ovan released his "Rebirth" ability through the internet, Zelkova brought all the other Epitaph Users to Net Slum Tartarga, and helped repair Haseo, whose PC and spirit were both damaged by the blast caused by Ovan's reset of the entire network. He then gives his Member Address to Haseo, with Kaede doing so soon after.

When Cubia appeared following the successful reboot of the system, Zelkova offered Net Slum to Yata as a new base for Project G.U. Using his powers, Zelkova assisted the G.U. members by organizing the players of R:2 into a force to fight against Cubia's Gomoras, and by searching the system for Cubia's main body. He also moved Canard to the Net Slum, along with Yata's Grunty, Wise Grunty. Following the successful victory over Cubia, Zelkova returned to R:2 alongside Kaede to begin the long task of rebuilding his guild.

Trivia

* In the Japanese version of the game, Zelkova's name was Keyaki. The name Keyaki means "Zelkova serrata" or "Keaki", which is a type of East Asian elm. Before becoming Keyaki, Zelkova went by the name Tsukinoki, which is another word for the same tree. The name of his guild, Moon Tree ("Tsuki no Ki" in Japanese), is a pun off of this.
* According to data hard-coded into Rebirth, Zelkova possesses perfect stats, much like Helba, and is also level 150, the maximum level. This was later changed when he joins Haseo's party in Redemption, but he still possesses infinite gold.
* Zelkova is the only Flick Reaper to join Haseo's Party.
* His weapon is called the Goddess Scythe in the English version of the series, and the Palm of Kannon in the Japanese version.
* He is credited with the creation of the Crown of Lu Ming by the Moon Tree guild clerk.
* Zelkova's PC is only 5'1" (156 cm) in height.
* Zelkova's English voice actor also voiced BlackRose in the original games.
* The Shopkeeper from .hack//LINK has a picture of Zelkova in his collection.
* He joins Haseo's Party at 127.

"Wolves... do not obey you 'dogs'."
— Ouka —

Ouka (凰花) is a female Werewolf with the title "Ouka of the Divine Fist" (神拳の凰花); she is known as one of the strongest characters within The World during .hack//Legend of the Twilight.

Online

Appearance

Ouka's appearance is the very definition of fan service, she wears little actual clothing save for a bikini (made into a one-piece in the anime) and a fluffy white shawl around her shoulders. Due to her special werewolf class she has many wolflike features, such as a large furry tuft of hair around her neck, boots shaped like paws, and wolf ears. She always wears a collar, given to her by Shugo (in his defense he thought she was a dog at the time). Her class also allows her to assume a wolf form. Her wave symbols are on her thighs and upper arms, and appear on both her human, and wolf forms. Despite not having human ears, she wears earrings in the normal location. An omake in the 3rd manga states that they are attached to very long strands of hair.

Offline

Base Info

Very little is known about Ouka offline, though she is apparently a young woman in her late teens or early twenties. According to Let's Meet Offline, she is a student attending Tokyo University and Mirei's tutor, but because this is part of the anime, it probably isn't canon.

History

.hack//Legend of the Twilight

Anime

As a friend of Mireille Ouka was introduced to Shugo and Rena at a special Cherry Blossom event designed by Balmung. First appearing in her wolf form Shugo mistook her for a dog and decided to raise her as an online pet. Unfortunately the event soon turned dangerous after a hacker released a powerful data bug into the crowd. Ouka was forced to assume her fighting form and helped Balmung hold off the monster while Shugo defeated it with a data drain. She soon became a regular member of the party, and joined Shugo and the rest in many other events.

After Rena was placed into a coma by the hackers, Ouka took it upon herself to help Shugo save her. She kept him hidden from Kamui and her Cobalt Knights and traveled with him to a closed off server where they had their final confrontation with the hackers and the Vagrant AI Morti. During the final battle Ouka was transformed into a puppy by Shugo's Drain Arc, rendering her useless for most of the fight.

Manga

Ouka's first appearance in the Legend of the Twilight manga was at the annual Cherry Blossom event, which she was invited to by her friend Mireille. As a joke she was introduced to Shugo and Rena while in her werewolf form, which caused the two to mistake her for a dog AI. Thinking that she was actually a dog, Shugo wound up giving her a dog collar as a gift, and only realized his mistake when she transformed into her human form in order to save him and his sister from a powerful skeleton monster. The resulting fight wound up destroying almost all of the cherry trees in the zone, and forced the event to an early close. Always the flirt, Ouka decided to keep wearing the dog collar even in her human form, as proof that Shugo was her "owner".

Soon afterwards, the Vagrant AI Zefie appeared and attached herself to Shugo. Though Ouka wasn't too fond of the young AI (who insisted on calling her "Poochie") Ouka agreed to help out in Zefie's search for her mother, the AI Aura. When Shugo and Zefie became the targets of Kamui and the Cobalt Knights, the debug team of The World, Ouka was arrested along with the rest of Shugo's party for "aiding an illegal character". Though released on probation, Ouka was unable to concentrate with her friend in trouble, and returned along with the rest of the party to help him out. With the help of the .hacker Kazu, Ouka was able to successfully hold off Magi and several Cobalt Knights while Shugo and the rest managed to escape to Net Slum. Though fully expecting to have her character deleted for defying CC Corp, Ouka was quite surprised when Kamui gave her a full pardon. Ouka's actions following this event are unknown, though it's possible she might have started a relationship with Kazu, whose actions during their fight against the Cobalt Knights left quite an impression on her.

Ouka in the Legend of the Twilight manga.

.hack//Rumor

Ouka makes a brief appearance at the end of Rumor when Rena shows Brigit, the PC she played before Rena, to both Ouka and Mireille. Rena asks Ouka what her reason for playing The World is, and Ouka responds that it's "To test my strength". Shugo arrives soon after, causing Rena to log onto her normal character so they can go onto an adventure.

Trivia

* Tokyopop mistranslated Ouka's name as "Orca" on several occasions, which confused many people, who got her mixed up with the legendary player Orca of the Azure Sea.
* The anime romanized her name as "Ohka", but it's slightly harder to spot, since it's pronounced the same as "Ouka".
* The Werewolf class that Ouka has is a rare class that only Knuckle Masters can upgrade to.
* An Apkallu thread about Ouka (misromanized as "Houka") appears in .hack//Reminisce. Several players post various messages. Some say that they knew her from the previous version of The World, while others are there to simply post messages about her "attributes."

"When the Bracelet appeared in the world, Cubia was born as well. The Bracelet and Cubia are opposite sides of the same coin. Therefore... if you defeat Cubia, the Bracelet will be destroyed."
— Aura —

Cubia (クビア), the "Hidden One", is a monster mentioned in the Epitaph of Twilight. He functions as the shadow to the light of Kite's Bracelet and is referred to as an "Anti-Existence."

History

.hack//Games

Cubia is the opposite of Kite's Bracelet, opposing the actions of Kite. Cubia first appeared when Kite Data Drained and defeated Skeith, a shadow formed from the unchecked power of the Bracelet. Cubia, being a shadow, grew every time the Bracelet Data Drained massive amounts of data. When Kite realized that Cubia was the opposite of the Bracelet, he had BlackRose destroy the Bracelet to destroy Cubia.

.hack//Another Birth

In Another Birth, BlackRose notices that there is a shadowy figure within the Cubia core, curled up in the fetal positional. The figure resembles Kite, and can also be seen when fighting Cubia in the .hack//Games. Kite speculates that Cubia was born because Aura wasn't complete when she created the first bracelet, creating an imperfect item, and that after Aura's rebirth she gained the ability to create the bracelet without having the side effect.

.hack//XXXX

XXXX introduces Cubia in a PC form. He appears after Kite defeats Skeith, as a strange Twin Blade. He defeats the second Phase Innis without much trouble, apparently on his own. His character has black hair, wears some sort of scarf, and his outfit consists of a very low shirt, and some dark pants with strange symbols. It is thought that this PC is related to the figure in the Cubia core in the canon. He also has access to the Data Drain ability, though it is inherent to him, rather than in an item he holds.

Cubia is aware of his role as Kite's Anti-Existence, and desires Kite's Bracelet so that he can free himself from a "destiny" which he does not want. Aura fears that if he succeeds, the results will be beyond even her power to repair.

Aura has stated that when she created the Bracelet, Morganna created Cubia in response.

End of The World

In one of his files, Jun Bansyoya refers to Cubia as an "anti-existence", a distortion in the system created by the power of Kite's Bracelet. He speculates that Project G.U. could spawn a new anti-existence, one even stronger than Cubia.

.hack//G.U. Games

In G.U. it is revealed that Cubia was created by Harald as the anti-existence to the Key of the Twilight. When Haseo gains the Xth Form, his PC itself becomes a "Key of the Twilight", creating a Cubia counter to him. As Skeith has by this point absorbed every Epitaph, the Cubia counter to him is several orders of magnitude stronger than the one made by Kite. It can spawn an unlimited amount of Gomora, which spread throughout both R:2 and the rest of the network, threatening to crash the entire network from the overload, an event that would precipitate the Third Network Crisis. It also possesses the ability to spawn Anti-Existences to specific PCs, which are identical in appearance to Doppelgangers, but are capable of regenerating infinitely when defeated and do not possess the Doppelgangers' added abilities of HP Regen, Stun Resistance, unique weapons with dangerous abilities, or higher character level. The new Cubia can be seen in numerous areas of R:2, and exists throughout the rest of the Internet as well. In a final act of desperation, this Cubia is defeated by Haseo, who absorbs the other present Epitaph Users and finally triumphs with help from Ovan.

* The fight with Cubia is the only Avatar Battle where Skeith's final form is used.
* Cubia, as seen in .hack//XXXX, is depicted on one of the cards in Crimson VS.
* At the final battle between Haseo and Cubia Core in G.U, there is a person melded into the top of Cubia's head, which looks like a naked Haseo. This seems to be a throwback to the original .hack games, in which there is a shadowy version of Kite's PC inside Cubia's Core.

"My name is Jun Bansyoya. I wrote this journal."
— Jun Bansyoya —

Jun Bansyoya (番匠屋淳) was a CC Corp employee involved in Project G.U. He is Reiko Saeki's older brother.

History

The End of The World

Jun's private PC in The World

After Aura mysteriously vanished from The World, CC Corp hired Jun Bansyoya to be one of the leads of Project G.U. Along with Jyotaro Amagi, the other lead, he began researching the events of the Morganna Incident for clues that could lead to finding Aura. Eventually he and Jyotaro created the R.A. Plan, which was designed to create a new ultimate A.I. under the control of CC Corp.

They accomplished this plan by finding the Eight Phases of Morganna and sealing them into special characters called Epitaph-PCs. By combing the pieces of the Morganna Factor it was hoped that a new Aura would be reborn. However Jun grew uneasy as the first test of the program drew near. He feared that combining the Eight Phases would create a new Anti-Existence similar to Cubia. Not wanting this to happen he stole the Epitaph PC containing Tarvos and sealed it into his own personal computer.

However Amagi had suspected something like this would occur, and had already created a Dummy Morganna Factor to use. With Jun gone Amagi proceeded with the test. It was a horrific failure, the R.A. program crashed deleting 80% of The World's data. Amagi himself suffered severe mental injury and proceeded to set fire to the CC Corp building. Jun arrived shortly after and tried to recover what he could, but he was only able to successfully capture Magus, the other six Phases had escaped into the system.

Accepting responsibility for the project's failure Jun resigned from CC Corp. Shortly afterwards The World was replaced with The World R:2. Watching from a distance he realized that the Epitaph-PCs released into the system were beginning to fuse with other players. Knowing that Tarvos would be needed if things were to be fixed he sent the Epitaph PC containing Tarvos to his sister Reiko. Along with a diary explaining everything that had occurred.

.hack//G.U.

By the time the G.U. games began, Jun had vanished. It is implied that he died shortly after sending his diary to his sister Reiko, who would continue in his place using the Epitaph-PC he had sent her.

Jun Bansyoya in .hack//G.U.+

Trivia

* Jun has had private characters for both R:1 and R:2, but their names and classes are unknown.
* When Pi obtains her Lost Weapon she senses Jun inside of it. However, this may have just been her personal reaction to it.

"Who... Am I?"
— Midori —

Midori (碧) is the main character of .hack//CELL, a novel set in The World R:2. She is not the PC of Midori Shimomura (下村みどり), but there is a close connection between the two.

Online

Appearance

Midori is a black-haired swordswoman dressed in a loose flowing dress. Her hair is decorated with bright flowers.

Personality

Midori acts as a professional victim in a business that is run by her partner Adamas. She was once a powerful PKer, but renounced violence and suppressed her memories of that time after she met Adamas.

Offline

Basic Info

Midori was born from a "virtual cell" in a medical computer. The cell was taken from a girl named Midori Shimomura who was suffering from a mysterious degenerative disorder. In an attempt to understand her condition, the doctors used a blood sample from her to create the virtual cell. However, the cell took on a life of its own and escaped into the network, where it grew and became sentient. "She" eventually arrived in The World R:2, where "she" created the PC Midori.

With the exception of the blood sample, Midori does not exist outside of the worldwide computer network and the electronic devices attached to it. She is, however, able to use those devices to observe and interact with the real world.

History

.hack//Roots

Midori acts as a professional victim. To encourage PKers to fight against her she has offered a reward for anybody who can defeat her. While adventuring in one of the Lost Grounds she watched as Ovan defeated Azure Kite in a fight. Not long afterwards Azure Kite attempted to attack her. Though she was heavily injured in the fight she managed to escape by warping to Mac Anu. As the first known survivor of "Tri-Edge", she quickly became a minor celebrity, drawing the attention of Haseo who tried to press her for information. Unable to recall the name of the player who had defeated Tri-Edge, she could not give Haseo the information he needed. Thinking that she was holding back he attacked her, but with her experience and skill she beat him without much difficulty.

"Once we rule the online world with AIDA, the real world will be as good as mine!! My rule will spread quickly across the real world, eventually allowing me to control people's very hearts! Then, I will be able to create a new world where no one fights, and where no one is ever oppressed by another."
— Sakaki —

Online

Appearance

Sakaki is a young, green-haired man. He is dressed in formal, Japanese-style clothing in the style of a noble. When fighting he draws an oversized, two-handed sword as is typical of his class.

After his being infected with the AIDA<Victorian>, Sakaki transforms into Sakaki<Zenith>. Very little of his original charm and charisma still exists: he is now thoroughly demonic in appearance. His face is drawn and twisted inhumanly, his hair is wild, and many parts of his body have become red and black, a trait signalling a deeply-rooted AIDA infection. In addition, he now has a single wing-like appendage protruding from his left shoulder, a vestige of the AIDA that possesses him.

Personality

As a member of Moon Tree Sakaki is devoted to keeping The World R:2 free from unwanted elements such as PKs. He is often found preaching to PKs and even to PKKs like Haseo about the value of peace. His ambition is far greater than that of the current Guildmaster, Zelkova, who enjoys playing The World much more than wielding the might of the guild. Because of this and his skills as a leader, a faction of the guild is more loyal to Sakaki than to Zelkova.

After his infection, Sakaki becomes Sakaki<Zenith>, an abomination of his former self in both body and mind. Now completely ruthless, he has abandoned his beliefs and ideals in the pursuit of further power, having no qualms about endangering the lives of all players in The World, nor of endorsing PK and PKK activities, doing whatever he likes to get whatever he wants.

Offline

Sakaki's player is a 10-year-old boy named Toru Uike (鵜池トオル). He has an excellent record and lives and attends elementary school in Tokyo, in the class of Michiru Tajima. He joined The World as way to get away from the prejudices of age. He befriended Atoli after meeting on a suicide webpage and asked her to join The World.

Toru Uike, the player behind Sakaki.

.hack//Roots

While walking in Mac Anu, Tabby overhears a passerby talking about Haseo's argument with Sakaki. She rushes to the scene but finds a large crowd blocking her path. This crowd prevents Sakaki from actually being seen, and his voice is never heard.

.hack//G.U. Games

Sakaki is a somewhat delusional character, with dreams of remaking the real world in the idealistic image of Moon Tree. Through acts of kindness, Sakaki was able to win over the loyalty of many players, including Matsu, Hiiragi, Sophora, Atoli, and a large number of other Moon Tree members. Only a small group of players, such as Kaede, and Haseo, suspected the darker side of his nature.

In actuality, Sakaki was being used as a puppet by Ovan, who gave him AIDA to control the minds and emotions of people in the real world so he could bring Moon Tree's ideals into reality. To establish his own AIDA server, he infected Atoli with AIDA, and had her use her Avatar to PK the powerful Zelkova. With the Guildmaster out of the picture, the four divisions of Moon Tree loyal to Sakaki were easily able to overpower the two loyal to Zelkova, and the AIDA server was established. However, G.U. was able to infiltrate the server and Haseo used Skeith to battle Atoli's Innis. Following Atoli's loss and cleansing, Sakaki fled from the scene. He was pursued to the Keel Mountains of Briona Gideon. In a final stand of desperation, he infected himself with an AIDA, which caused him to go into a frenzied state. He was then defeated by Haseo, Atoli, and Pi, falling from the mountain's virtual cliffs.

However, Sakaki was far from beaten. Shortly after the beginning of Redemption, an email is sent to all the members of G.U. requiring them to meet at the Serpent of Lore. However, it is Sakaki in his new form, not Yata who greets them. He boasts of how he, having signed a contract with CC Corp, is now the leader of Project G.U. as well as head of the System Administration and the operation of The World itself. To add insult to injury, he brings in Yata's vacant PC and mercilessly abuses it. Demanding that the enraged Epitaph-Users submit to his will, he threatens that, as his rule within The World is now absolute, he can enact any means of discipline online or offline in the name of CC Corp to any who defy or attempt to work against him. Knowing that they are powerless, Haseo and the others leave, unwilling to aid him and unable to act against him directly.

Sakaki goes onto host his Tournament in the Sage Palace open exclusively to PKs and offering an exorbant sum of offline cash to the winner. His hidden purpose is to lure Haseo out into the open and gives Haseo a seeded entry. He demands Haseo participate and, furthermore, bet his undying loyalty on his own victory. Sakaki further threatens to flood The World with AIDA seeds should Haseo refuse. In order to tip the scales further in his own favor, Sakaki subsequently turns the Sage Palace into an AIDA Server and forces Haseo to participate in a variety of battles that are obviously to his disadvantage, including forcing him fight multiple battles against former Chaotic PKs in a single round, and, later, using the power of AIDA to tempt Haseo to unleash Skeith on IYOTEN and Asta. Despite all, Haseo continues to emerge victorious, whereupon Sakaki defames Haseo by exposing his status as an Epitaph-User by defining him as a hacked PC, and that his avatar was a hacked skill, to The World at large. It is only by Taihaku's direct intervention that Haseo's sentence of account banning is overturned by stating that though Haseo is a hacked PC, not even a low hacker can defeat him.

In the finals, Sakaki manipulates Hetero and his teammates, whose PCs he personally infected and illegally modified, forcing them to not only cause Sirius to become a lost one, but to fight Haseo and, in turn, force him to unleash Skeith in self-defense. Haseo is only saved by the fact that the users present cannot see Avatars.

After Haseo's fight with Taihaku, Sakaki, realizing Haseo is weak and defenseless, attempts to finish him off once and for all. Kuhn and Atoli, Haseo's teammates, attempt to help, but Sakaki uses his System Administration powers to forcefully teleport them away. However, before he can deal the final blow, Endrance, who had previously pledged his allegiance to Sakaki, stabs him in the back, at which point whatever little control Sakaki had over the AIDA possessing him fails. Growing completely power-mad, the AIDA<Victorian> emerges as Sakaki declares himself God of The World. Haseo, with the help of his friends, summons Skeith and, in a decisive battle, removes the AIDA from Sakaki.

Having lost all his power, Sakaki plummets into an Outer Dungeon.Ovan, however, is there waiting for him. Ignoring Sakaki's pleas for another AIDA Seed, he leaves Sakaki to die at the hands of Azure Kite, Azure Orca and Azure Balmung.

Ovan later admits that it was he who directed Sakaki's actions, giving him the numerous astounding abilities, both Online and Offline, the power to control AIDA and, later, the AIDA seeds he used. Sakaki's threat to flood The World with AIDA seeds was a bluff: he had none to do so, as Ovan revealed, the last one he had had already been used up, presumably on the Hetero Trio.

Online Jack

When Osamu Kawaguchi collapes from Doll Syndrome, he says only a single word: "Sakaki". Further research by Professor Taichiro Sugai reveals that Osamu's character in The World R:2 was a member of Moon Tree and served in Sakaki's Unit. Furthermore he discovers that all of the children with Doll Syndrome in Michiru Tajima's class were also members of Moon Tree. Before any more information can be found Michiru receives a text message from Osamu begging her to come to her school's computer lab. Upon arriving she is met by Tooru Uike, a student from her class and the player behind Sakaki.

After taunting her about the perfect world he plans to create, Tooru uses his control over AIDA and commands the other students to attack their teacher. Salvador Aihara breaks in shortly after and tries to stop him, but Tooru defeats him using several extraordinary abilities, like the power to control electricty and teleportation. When the police arrive Tooru and the students are nowhere to be found, having already teleported away.

Tooru makes a brief apperance in Online Jack shortly after the fall of Cubia and immediately prior to the release of Shino from the hospital. After the fall of Sakaki at the hands of Azure Kite, he and the other missing children are found, officially, in an abandoned home near their school (presumably his hideout). Neither he nor the others have any memory of his activities, and Tooru is shown laughing, carefree and innocent, in his hospital bed.

.hack//GU+

In GU+ Sakaki confronts Haseo alongside Atoli in a town square in Mac Anu. He tells Haseo that PKKs like him have contributed to the disorder currently plaguing The World R:2, and that in the end he is no different from a common PKer. Haseo ignores him, saying that he has his own reasons for being a PKK. Despite Sakaki's attempts to stop him, Haseo pushes past him and walks off.

In Trilogy, much of Sakaki's purpose in the storyline is entirely removed. He appears but twice in the entire movie: once when Haseo originally meets Atoli, to explain to him the situation of The World and PKers, much like in the game Rebirth, and then later, when Haseo has a flash of all of his friends within The World, Sakaki is there alongside Atoli.

Trivia

* Sakaki is named after the tree "Cleyera japonica", a type of Japanese evergreen. In Shinto rituals, branches of the tree are used as conduits between humans and the gods. The tree's kanji combines the "god" radical with the "tree" radical, suggesting early on his megalomania.
* Sakaki's English voice actor also voiced Balmung.
* Sakaki is 6'0" (185 cm) in height.
* The Broadsword Sakaki wields is named "Heavenly Dawn", a level 87 broadsword equipped with flood attack.
* Oddly enough, in .hack G.U. Volume 1, Sakaki's character is at level 115 or so. However, in Volume two, his character is dulled down to somewhere in the 80's.

Atoli

"You shouldn't forget about things like gratitude, or consideration, just because we're inside of a game."
— Atoli —

Atoli (アトリ) is a female Harvest Cleric and a member of the guild called Moon Tree. She is also an Epitaph User, and is the host for the Second Phase Innis, the Mirage of Deceit.

Online

Appearance

Atoli is almost an identical twin to Shino, the only differences being her hair, and the lack of a teardrop shaped mark, along with a more colorful outfit. Her appearance is that of a young blonde woman. She wears a small green dress, a short white wing-shaped mantle on her back, white stockings, and a white hat. Her wave symbol is on her hat, and she wields a staff in combat.

Personality

Atoli is a pacifist and is seen as very naive. She sees The World as being more like an alternate reality instead of just an online game, much like Hotaru from Legend of the Twilight. She is deeply devoted to helping others and can't understand why everybody can't just get along and enjoy the game together. As a member of Moon Tree's Second Division she serves under Sakaki. She frequently finds herself torn between her loyalty to her Captain, and her friendship with Haseo.

Offline

Basic Info

Atoli's player is a 16 year old girl named Chigusa Kusaka, who lives in the Chiba prefecture. During middle school, she was bullied frequently. Her parents harassed her about her failing grades, her attitude (they believed girls should be quiet), and her decision to wear designer clothing one day. This led to her shutting herself in her room and browsing suicide websites, which is where she met Sakaki, who befriended her. Around the time she entered high school, Sakaki suggested for her to join The World.

Hobbies

She is part of Animal Club at school and prides herself at being a good cook. She loves small birds and owns three pet birds in real life.

History

.hack//G.U. Games

Haseo befriends Atoli, but is haunted by memories of Shino. When Atoli finds out about Shino, she is very upset and angry, and believes that Haseo only befriended her because she looks like Shino. She runs off, to go seek out Tri-Edge on her own and prove herself to Haseo. Haseo, Pi, and Kuhn follow her and defeat Azure Flame Kite in a blank room with nothing but a stack of coinlockers. After Kite's defeat, as Haseo and Atoli seem to be making up, a locker opens, and an AIDA cloud appears inside. Atoli walks towards them, as if in a trance. She is shown in a strange red light, then all the lockers open, and black hands of an AIDA cloud fly out and attack her. She falls over. The screen goes black, and shatters into a small crack. Haseo screams her name.

After the attack on her, Atoli briefly loses consciousness, and Kuhn uses Magus to bring her back to Raven's @HOME. There, Atoli awakens, disoriented and unable to speak with audio (in much the same way as Macha). Attempting to reset her computer, Atoli is the first to realize that the players are now trapped within the game, unable to determine where their real bodies even are. As Haseo and the rest of G.U. attempt to restore things to normal, Atoli's condition worsens, and her arm begins to deteriorate. This is due to the loss of her Epitaph, causing Haseo to begin a desperate search for the AIDA carrying it and drawing them both into the Holy Palace Tournament. After the original server is restored, Atoli finds herself unable to use her arm, even in the real world (when she is in the party during this time, a sprinkle of data constantly leaks from Atoli's right hand). Her doctor diagnoses her with Doll Syndrome. At the tournament's conclusion, Atoli's Epitaph is returned, at which point she immediately recovers.

Later in the game, Sakaki uses AIDA to infect her. This causes her to manifest at least some of her Epitaph's abilities, transforming Moon Tree's @HOME into an AIDA Server. The corruption of the area is more evident the further Haseo goes inside, eventually becoming a long replica of a school hallway filled with human shadows and various echoing fragments of conversations. At the end of this, Haseo finds Atoli and Sakaki standing on the little remains of the Seven Counsel's meeting area, while a shadow of Atoli seated at a desk laments about her life. Atoli is finally provoked, and transforms into her Avatar Innis. An AIDA infected Atoli fights Haseo, as he tries to desperately release her from the infection. Once Haseo defeats her, the AIDA disappears and Sakaki leaves defeated. Afterward, Atoli begins to have a mental breakdown at what she's done, which results in Haseo slapping her and giving her a wakeup call. She vows to make amends for what she's done, taking her steps forward.

Atoli infected by AIDA

Atoli, along with Pi, goes with Haseo to confront Sakaki at Briona Gwydion the Dragonbein Range, wanting to know whether the real Sakaki is the one she knew for so long or the one that has appeared now. Sakaki chews her out and proceeds to infect himself with AIDA, leading to a battle between them. Upon Sakaki's defeat, Ovan appears and reveals the truth about all that has transpired. He uses the AIDA in his arm to PK both Atoli and Pi, leaving them temporarily comatose (though both quickly recover). Later in the game, she asks Haseo to come to the cathedral so that they may speak privately. Just before Atoli can say something, she spots something behind Haseo and her eyes widen. When he turns around, Ovan appears behind Haseo and tells him to become stronger to defeat him. The screen turns black again, and shatters, but with a bigger crack than before.

Atoli stays in the background for most of the third game, although she reveals shortly after the start that she can now use her Epitaph at will. She also joins Team Haseo once more in Sakaki's PK Tournament. After Haseo's party defeats Cubia, Atoli and Haseo are summoned to Δ Hidden Forbidden Holy Ground by Shino. While there, Haseo is forced to sort out his feelings. Shino helps Haseo realize his feelings, her thoughts still lingering with Ovan, telling him that she had seen everything while within Ovan's arm. With that, Haseo chases after Atoli, who is rather surprised to see Haseo chasing after her.

.hack//G.U. TRILOGY

Atoli first appeared at Mac Anu with Sakaki. Later, she meets Haseo again after the tournament battle, and they travel into a field together. Eventually, Atoli's feelings are hurt after Haseo yelled at her and told her to not bother him anymore. She first met Ovan in a chapel at Hy Brasail and he explains that Haseo's frustration was from her character appearance.

Later, Atoli went outside of the normal game space, trying to be brave on her own. She tries to open the lockers, but Haseo along with Pi and Kuhn arrived at her location. Atoli and Haseo talked in a short conversation until Azure Kite appears during the scene. After Haseo defeated Azure Kite, the lockers suddenly open and multiple AIDA appeared from within and attacked her.

Falling into her dark memories, Atoli was rendered trapped in a sunset classroom, surrounded by tormenting voices. Haseo entered her mind, only to find that Atoli was unable to listen. She assumed a corrupted form similar to Haseo's later B-st Form and attacked Haseo with clawed tentacles. She was soon calmed when Haseo waded through her attacks and apologized, embracing her. At that point, the AIDA was driven out of Atoli's body.

Both were reawakened at Backtop City Megin Fi where Ovan was waiting for them. Atoli was shocked when she saw Pi and Kuhn's bodies in the ground, which instantly disintegrated shortly after. Ovan revealed to them that he is the true Tri-Edge, then attacks Haseo, but Atoli saved him causing her character to disintegrate.

She later reappears within Haseo's consciousness to calm his mind, then fuses with him so Haseo could gain his Xth Form. After Ovan uses the Rebirth ability, she returns to the same spot where she was at Backtop City Megin Fi along with Aina, Pi, and Kuhn. She told Haseo that she could still hear Ovan somewhere, then sent Haseo to find Ovan by lending him her Avatar powers.

A month later, Atoli and Haseo were talking at the Hulle Granz Cathedral. Atoli first met Shino as she enters to thank Haseo then leaves. At that moment, Atoli and Haseo held hands in the end.

.hack//G.U.+

After Haseo saves Atoli from being PKed, she makes it a goal to find out more about the mysterious PKKer known as the "Terror of Death". Despite Sakaki's warnings to stay away from somebody like him, Atoli seeks out Haseo in an attempt to befriend him. Later she is seen in Lumina Cloth passing out pamphlets that seem to be some sort of anti-PK papers. Though Negimaru appears and mocks her work, she remains friendly, even offering him a pamphlet.

At the Lumina Cloth Arena she is approached by Ovan who asks her to deliver a message to Haseo. The message is short: "Become stronger so you can save Shino." When she asks who Shino is, Ovan responds that she was a friend of Haseo's who had a character model similar to hers. She gives the message to Haseo, who is preparing to fight against the current arena champion Endrance and is surprised when he reacts angrily to the message. Fuming he heads off to the Arena, leaving a confused Atoli behind. Watching the fight from the sidelines she is one of the few people present who is able to see Haseo and Endrance activate their Avatars during the fight. Atoli is confused when people start muttering about the fight being boring as she can clearly see Macha and Skeith fighting in the arena below.

Later Atoli approaches Haseo in Mac Anu, she tells him that she got permission from Sakaki to invite him into Moon Tree. To her surprise he refuses her request and accuses her of blindly following Sakaki's orders. Atoli tells him that Moon Tree and Sakaki are the only support that she has, since she's never been able to find acceptance in the real world. She tells Haseo that she learned about Shino, and asks him what Ovan meant by "Save Shino". Haseo grows angry with her; he asks her why she's so interested in a jerk like him. He tells her that he's not a person who could support her and demands that she leave him alone. Atoli tearfully runs away, and soon gets a message from Sakaki telling her to travel to Morrigu Barrow Wall. Traveling there alone, she waits for Sakaki to appear, but is surprised when Tri-Edge suddenly appears in the zone.

Atoli in G.U.+

.hack//4koma

In terms of personality, Atoli's 4koma incarnation is mostly unchanged - sweet and trusting to a fault, she still idolizes Sakaki and tries desperately to make Haseo happy. However, her weakness for seeing The World as an alternate reality is greatly exaggerated - not only does she still maintain her fondness for Lucky Animals and Chim Chims, she becomes quite aggressive when battling monsters, attacking mercilessly.

Since meeting Kite, she has grown to idolize him and sees him only as the selfless hero. Like BlackRose, she is quite distressed by the growing animosity between Kite and Haseo.

Additionally, her darker side is also exaggerated and developed - Atoli confesses her resentment of others more fortunate or rich than herself, and often seems to contemplate suicide, though others view this latter habit with annoyance rather than fear for her well-being. Additionally, during a parody of her memory scene in Reminisce, Atoli is shown to be a "yanki" (slang term for a rude, rowdy delinquent based off the American term Yankee) in real life.

Trivia

* Atoli's starting level is 3.
* Atoli's starter weapon is called the Spell Xialin, a common level 1 weapon.
* Atoli's Japanese voice actress, Ayako Kawasumi, also does the voice of Hotaru.
* Her name comes from her pet bird, which is a brambling ("atori" in Japanese).
* Her character is 5'3" (161 cm) in height.
* A poll on CyberConnect2's website shows Atoli as the third most popular character in .hack//G.U.

Shino

"There is no such thing as a voice that cannot reach someone."
— Shino —

Shino (志乃) is a female Harvest Cleric with the same character model as Atoli. She was the co-leader of the Twilight Brigade guild, which she ran along with Ovan.

Online

Appearance

Shino is a somewhat scantily dressed pink-haired Harvest Cleric. She wears a white corset, white stockings, and a white hat. She also wears a short grey cape on her back. Though usually weaponless, she pulls out a staff when danger approaches. A teardropped shaped tattoo is located below her left eye.

She later changed her appearance to a darker look, with a different wave symbol and mostly black clothes. This was done in order to demostrate her resolve in waiting for Ovan. She continues using this look during the games, though in these she has grey hair. In G.U.+, this outfit has blue hair.

Personality

Though polite and friendly, Shino remains distant to most people. She keeps her feelings inside, only expressing her true emotions to her close friend Ovan, who she constantly worries about, and, eventually, to Haseo. She might seem composed to the casual observer, but inside her mind is a very depressed young woman. Despite the best efforts of the other members of the Twilight Brigade, Shino remains a mystery to everyone but Ovan.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world Shino is a college student in Saitama named Shino Nanao. Although she loves plants, she lives in a small apartment and has nowhere to grow them. She dreams of one day living in a large house and filling it with Corn Dracaena. She lives alone, and has met Ovan in the real world. She also appears to suffer from some sort of health problem.

When she falls into a coma, Ryou (Haseo) visits her everyday. Eventually, Moe (Tabby) does as well, and even meets Ryou, although she doesn't reveal her identity.

A depiction of Shino Nanao from the CC2 website

.hack//Roots

As one of the leaders of the Twilight Brigade Shino was ordered by Ovan to find the newbie Adept Rogue Haseo and encourage him to join the Guild. Though unsuccessful in her efforts, Haseo eventually joined the Brigade after some prodding by Ovan. Haseo proved a great help to the Guild, by locating Virus Cores and finding how to access a secret dungeon inside one of the Lost Grounds. However, when the Brigade explored the dungeon they found themselves attacked by agents from the rival Guild TaN. Ovan entered the dungeon alone during the fight, and mysteriously vanished. In response Shino used some information that Ovan had gathered to expose TaN's illegal activities, and managed to get the Guild disbanded. Ovan however, did not reappear.

With her close friend missing, and the Guild missing one of its key members the Brigade began to slowly fall apart. Soon Haseo and Shino were the only members left. Shino decided to break the Guild, and wait for Ovan to return. Haseo promised that he'd wait along with her. As a sign of her resolve Shino adopted a new look, replacing her white clothing with black.

Eventually Shino received a message, apparently from Ovan. She rushed to meet him at the Hulle Granz Cathedral but found tragedy waiting for her instead. Haseo arrived soon after, right as she was falling to the ground, dying. Despite his efforts to save her, Shino was killed and fell into a coma in the real world, becoming a Lost One. Azure Kite (Who was thought to be Tri-Edge) was at the scene, making him the most likely suspect. Haseo vows to find and kill "Tri-Edge" in revenge.

Episode 25 (Truth) reveals that Ovan was the one who PKed Shino, though it is implied to be accidental. A short flashback shows Ovan appearing in the cathedral as Shino walks in. She runs to him, but somehow the device on his arm opens, and what was inside killed her almost instantly, revealing that Azure Kite was not the one who sent Shino into her coma.

.hack//G.U. Games

Haseo swore vengeance against Tri-Edge after she was killed by him, an event which left her in a coma in the real world. At various points in the game, Shino is featured in flashbacks from the time of Roots.

Following the destruction of AIDA and then Cubia, Shino awoke from her coma and returned to the game. Her return seemed to leave Haseo torn between his feelings for Shino and Atoli, but she encouraged him to follow his heart, allowing him to follow Atoli. She also proposed the idea of reforming the Twilight Brigade to find Ovan, but was never answered. Shortly after, she gave Haseo her member address again and rejoined him. Following the event of the Forest of Pain, Haseo told her about meeting Ovan at the bottom, and his feeling that Ovan will return someday. She simply smiled at him.

Online Jack

In the final episode of Online Jack, Michiru and Salvador reflected on how little they actually knew about AIDA, when Shino passed by them and mysteriously said "Opposing mirrors of hope and despair". When Salvador reacted with surprise, she got in an elevator and simply said "That is what AIDA is" as the doors closed. Down the hall, a nurse removed Shino Nanao's name from a door.

.hack//GU+

Atoli, with her strong resemblance to Shino, often causes Haseo to have flashbacks to his time in the Brigade. Later Yata reveals that he's been keeping her unconscious PC body in The Serpent of Lore, when Haseo confronts him about this Yata tells him that Shino was formerly the Epitaph PC for The Mirage of Deceit, but that her Avatar fled her PC Body when she was PKed.
