Gardenia

"I'm the silent type and usually don't have much to say, but it's strange... for some reason, I seem to talk a lot more when you are around."
— Gardenia —

Gardenia (ガルデニア)is a Long Arm of few words in the .hack//Games.

Online

Appearance

Gardenia is a blonde Long Arm that wears white and green armor over a matching battle dress. Her red eyes often gaze coldly and she almost never smiles, although she seems to warm up to Kite after spending a lot of time with him.

Personality

Gardenia is the quiet type; when she speaks she doesn't make sure to get her point clear, often making Kite misunderstand her. Due to her beautiful avatar, personality, and strength, a "Gardenia Fanclub" entirely devoted to her was created. Ever since, Gardenia has had to dodge obsessive fans everywhere she goes, much to her annoyance. Due to her stoic nature, she is primarily a solo player. Kite is one of the few players she can tolerate for long periods of time, and may be her only real friend in the game.

History

.hack//Games

Kite first meets Gardenia after he follows a post on the BBS by the Gardenia fan club. The fan club gives him a letter to deliver to Gardenia and he accepts the job. When he encounters Gardenia in the field's dungeon, it is clear that she wants nothing to do with the letter, but Kite pursues anyway. At the bottom level of the dungeon, Kite aids Gardenia in dispatching a monster. Gardenia, impressed by Kite's skill, agrees to accept the letter on the condition that he joins her party whenever she calls.

Gardenia calls Kite to join her in several fields that have flowers for names. In Outbreak, Gardenia calls Kite to another dungeon and talks about how she feels she is like a flower, and how the life of a flower is short. At the bottom of the dungeon, Gardenia says goodbye; Kite takes this the wrong way, believing her to be referring to her life ending soon. Gardenia laughs and reassures Kite that she meant her time in The World is short since she has obligations in the real world, and that she looks forward to joining Kite whenever she has the chance.

.hack//Another Birth

After hearing about a "beautiful and mysterious player", Chimney, NOVA, and BlackRose travel to Θ Soft Solitary Tri-Pansy. In the field they meet several members of Gardenia's fan club, who ask if they've seen "Gar". NOVA tells them that he hasn't, and the fans go off disappointed. Later they meet with Gardenia in a dungeon and help her get away from several of her fans. After thanking them for their help, Gardenia notices BlackRose. Gardenia recognizes her as Kite's partner, but warps away without telling her that she's also a friend of Kite's. Later, when all of Kite's friends gather together, BlackRose is surprised to see Gardenia among them.

Trivia

* Gardenia joins Kite at level 10 with a level 2 weapon called Amazon Spear.
* Contrary to many rumors, Gardenia was NOT one of the players that controlled Mimika.
* Gardenia is so popular that she has her own fanclub, though it is unknown why she is so popular.
* Gardenia also seems to be very skilled at Grunty Racing, being in third place on certain servers.

Gardenia's Mission Areas

* Infection:
o Θ Soft Solitary Tri Pansy: Area where Gardenia joins Kite.
o Θ Beautiful Someone's Treasure Gem: Gardenia invites Kite to a mission.
* Mutation:
o Λ Quiet Oblivious Cabbage: Gardenia has invited Kite to a dungeon. There was no reason listed or given.
* Outbreak:
o Σ Dolorous Promised Clavicle: Gardenia invites Kite to another area.

Phyllo

"Today is the same as yesterday. Tomorrow is the same as today. Did you think that would last forever?"
— Phyllo —

Phyllo (フィロ) is a mysterious floating sage with a tail. He seems to know a great deal about The World R:2 and all of its mysteries and inhabitants. Though he's one to talk rather than to fight, he can hold his own in a battle.

Online

Appearance

Phyllo appears as a small Tu Tribe character dressed in a dark gray robe. He has the ability to hover when he moves and wields a gnarled wooden staff when forced into combat. Despite his rather cute appearance he nevertheless has a wise aura about him.

Personality

Phyllo has become a sort of landmark in The World R:2. He can almost always be found sitting on the same bridge in the Root Town of Mac Anu. People of all classes, levels, and ideals come to ask him for advice, making him one of the most well known players in the game. His level is quite high, so he is able to wander through the game without having to worry about attacks by PKers.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world Phyllo is a 62 year old man named Kojirou Nakamura. He lives alone with a pet dog and 2 cats for companionship. Terminally ill with cancer he has decided to live the remainder of his life as a sage in The World.

History

.hack//Roots

As one of the first people to encounter Haseo in The World Phyllo took it upon himself to show the young Adept Rogue how to play the game correctly. He advised Haseo throughout his time in the Twilight Brigade and was one of his few remaining friends after the Guild was dissolved. After Shino fell into a coma he became increasingly concerned by Haseo's increasingly erratic behavior and tried helplessly to dissuade Haseo from hunting Tri-Edge. Having encountered Tri-Edge himself he knew that Haseo had no chance of defeating the mysterious PKer in combat. Unfortunately Haseo saw Phyllo as nothing more then a meddling old man, and frequently told him to mind his own business.

Phyllo also provided much needed advice to Tabby. His guidance would help her find the motivation to create the Guild Paw Pad Squadron and also help her find the courage to reconnect with Haseo. However despite the help he gave others his mind was always fixated on Haseo. When Tawaraya reappeared in The World as the character Tohta Phyllo encouraged him to meet with Haseo, hoping that he could give Haseo the help that he had refused from Phyllo. His plan worked, and Phyllo was able to help Haseo using Tohta as a middle-man.

When Ovan returned to The World after his long absence one of the first characters he met with was Phyllo. Meeting at the Arche Koeln Waterfall he told Phyllo the truth about his character, Phyllo promised that he'd take Ovan's secret to the grave. This promise would come true faster then Phyllo had expected when Phyllo's health in the real world suddenly began to worsen. Knowing the end of his life was near he contacted Tohta, who agreed to give Haseo one final message. Phyllo died shortly after, and Tohta delivered the message as promised. "Faith will always win, no matter what".

.hack//G.U. Games

Before he passed away, Phyllo contacted his friend Antares, a former Arena Emperor. Giving Antares access to his character, he asked him to watch over Haseo. Phyllo told Antares about the Lost Ground Caerleon Medb and the Lost Weapons sealed inside of it. He also gave Antares a note to pass onto Haseo when he was ready. Though accepting of his fate, Phyllo seemed to find it auspicious that the Lost Ground "at the end of the world" would be his last contribution to Haseo's quest.

Long after Phyllo's death, Antares would fulfill his wish and bring Haseo to Caerleon Medb. After Haseo completed unlocking his own Lost Weapon, Antares gave Haseo Phyllo's note.

Trivia

* When Haseo obtains his Lost Weapon he senses Phyllo's spirit inside of it. However, this was likely just the Lost Weapon reacting to his Epitaph.
* The Tu Tribe characters used by Medic Union could possibly be an homage to Phyllo, who helped shape their Guild's predecessor the Paw Pad Squadron.

Terajima Ryoko

"Because of you, I no longer get lost."
— Terajima Ryoko —

Terajima Ryoko (寺島良子) is a Heavy Axeman that first appears in .hack//Outbreak. She accidentally put her real name as her username in The World when registering. She joins Kite's party because he saved her from the bottom of a high level dungeon.

Online

Appearance

Terajima Ryoko has a character design that resembles an angel. She has golden brown hair with a halo and a shiny white dress. Her angelic wings gives her the ability to hover above the ground slightly, as shown when commanding her to heal the party.

Personality

Terajima is a rather shy and overly-polite girl, but she can be feisty when something she wants is being taken away from her, as seen in her rivalry with BlackRose for Kite's affections. At one point, she says that Kite is the only male friend she's ever had. This is possibly why she feels territorial about him. She also seems to have a very poor sense of direction.

Offline

Basic Info

Terajima is a Junior in Class 8, at Saiba High School, an expensive, all-female school, which may explain her shyness towards Kite. Her next school field trip may be north to see the Auroras, and then to Hawaii to thaw out. She is very close to her father, though calling him overprotective of her would be an understatement.

Hobbies

Terajima's father is a rice freak and she enjoys cooking it along with him.

History

.hack//Games

Terajima Ryoko is only a minor character in the games. She has little to do with the main plot and joins late in the story. Her first appearance is through a BBS post where she invites people to meet with her on the top floor of a dungeon at Σ Cracked Worst Milestone. Somehow she managed to wander all the way to the dungeons bottom level, where she was eventually found by Kite. Lacking an item to escape, Kite guided her back to the entrance. In exchange he was rewarded with her Member Address.

Shortly afterwards she contacted Kite with the location of a high level dungeon at Σ Generous Bemused Virgin that was supposedly full of rare items. Despite her low level, Kite accompanied her to the dungeon. On the bottom floor they were attacked by a powerful Monster. Eager to prove herself, Terajima Ryoko tried to fight it alone, forcing Kite to leap in and save her. Though Kite was nearly killed during the fight he succeeded in defeating the monster by himself. Upset, Terajima Ryoko apologized to him, saying that she was the type of person who could only cause trouble for others. Kite suggested that she use her experiences in The World as an opportunity to change herself. This event marked the beginning of her infatuation with Kite.

Later she invited Kite to another dungeon at Ω Raging Facing Mirrors Virgin, but was distressed when she realized that BlackRose had invited him too. Not wanting to share Kite with another girl, she became quite moody, and began to argue about unimportant things with BlackRose. She and BlackRose bickered through the entire dungeon. Eventually the two became angry enough that they split ways at the bottom of the dungeon, leaving a confused Kite behind.

Like the rest of Kite's party, Terajima Ryoko was present during the final fight against Corbenik and was a victim of its Drain Heart attack.

.hack//Another Birth

Terajima Ryoko's role in Another Birth is essentially the same, although she talks to and makes up with BlackRose after their dungeon adventure, both expressing annoyance at Kite's indecision.

Trivia

* Terajima is most likely based off of the character Princess Terria from Tail Concerto, another game developed by CyberConnect2, since they are both wealthy girls in fancy dress and have similar names, and fight over the main character with another woman.
* Terajima Ryoko's name is spelled Terashima Ryoko on the official CC2 site.
* Her starting level is 1 with a level 4 weapon called White Axe.
* Terajima's Japanese voice actress, Kaori Nazuka, also voices Subaru and Shino.
* Terajima was able to get to the bottom of a high level dungeon without activating the Magic Portals by sneaking past them, although, this is impossible in the .hack//Games because it isn't exactly like the real The World.
* When going to the BlackRose/Terajima dungeon, it is highly recommended that the player take Terajima's path because the weapon at the end yields a one-of-a-kind Subaru's Axe while BlackRose's path yields a common Sun Fang.
* She only appears in Image 44 in the Games, excluding the group wallpapers
* Her Father once hired some secret service agents to "take care of" a boy that asked her out. Though her comments after the end of the game hint that he may be more accepting of Kite.
* In the US release of the games, Ryoko's name is kept in Japanese order (family name first) for some reason.
* Although Helba is the only character to hover while moving, Terajima can float momentarily while using a recovery spell, revealing that her wings are somewhat functional.

"To flee because of weakness is a sin."
— King Grunty —

King Grunty (キング★ランディ) is a Grunty modeled after Taihaku. It manages the @Home of Icolo in Lumina Cloth. Like Taihaku, King Grunty values personal strength above all else. It insists that almost anything is possible for a man or woman to accomplish if they have enough strength. When Melo Grunty runs away following Sakaki's attempted coup d'etat of Moon Tree; King Grunty volunteers to help look for it, stating that the way Melo Grunty has run away from reality is "disgraceful". It assists Haseo by disguising his human scent with Grunty scent.

Trivia

* King Grunty is the only Grunty in .hack//GU Rebirth that didn't appear in the Grunty Item quest.

Hetero

"Help me, please. Someone help me, please..."
— Hetero —

Hetero (ヘテロ) is a male Flick Reaper and the leader of Hetero Team.

Online

Appearance

Hetero is an imposing red-haired man dressed in a white trenchcoat. His eyes glow green, perhaps a sign of his AIDA infection. He has a rather futuristic look that is very different from most of PCs of the game. This appearance is due to AIDA, and is removed once he is freed from AIDA.

Personality

Little is known about Hetero’s personality. It seems that he had never intentionally tried to use AIDA or be associated with AIDA and was instead forcibly infected by Sakaki and used as his pawn.

Offline

Basic Info

Offline, Hajime Maekawa(前川創) is a high school student in Kouchi Prefecture. His brothers Sei and Osamu also play The World R:2.

History

.hack//G.U. Games

Hetero and his brothers were infected with AIDA by Sakaki, who used his power over AIDA to manipulate and control them. At his orders, Hetero entered the Sage Palace Tournament as Sakaki's "secret weapon". During the first round they fought and defeated Sirius, turning him into a Lost One. Later, during the finals they fought against Team Haseo. Though Hetero and his brothers were difficult opponents, Haseo and his teammates were able to defeat them. Using Skeith, Haseo fought against Grunwald, the AIDA that was infecting them. After the AIDA was Data Drained, Hetero and his brothers' PCs collapsed and returned to normal. Their fate after this is unknown.

Trivia

* Like his teammates, Hetero's name comes from a genetic phenotype.
* Hetero has the same Japanese voiceactor as IYOTEN.
* The scythe Hetero uses is called Scythe Toge. It is a normal scythe that can be purchased from Breg Epona at any time.

"Hey, in this game I'm known as Orca! Regardless of what I am in reality. I'm pretty well known here."
— Orca —

Orca (オルカ) of the Azure Sea, one of the Descendants of Fianna, is a popular Blademaster that was famed for destroying the the One Sin along with Balmung.

Online

Appearance

Orca is a burly and battle-scarred warrior. He wears little armor, with the exception of a harness, boots, and his pants. His wave sign is green, and covers almost all of his upper body, including his face.

Personality

Orca is a very friendly person online, his warmth and approachable personality have won him many friends in The World. He enjoys roleplaying as a true medieval warrior and changes his manner of speaking accordingly. Despite being one of the most famous players in the game, he still takes the time to help show newbies how the game works.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world, Orca is a 14 year old Junior High school student named Yasuhiko. A close friend of Kite in reality, he was the one responsible for convincing him to start playing The World.

History

.hack//AI buster

Orca first appears in AI buster as a participant in the monster invasion of Mac Anu. He helps to rally people to the defense of the town, and later watches as Albireo defeats the invasion's boss monster. Impressed by Albireo's skill, Orca follows the Long Arm to his house with his partner Balmung.

Orca invites Albireo to form a party with Balmung and himself in order to try the supposedly unbeatable event The One Sin. Albireo politely refuses, and Orca and Balmung later go on to clear the event as a duo. For their efforts, Balmung was the MVP of the battle and received the wings as a character modification prize. Also the web poet W.B. Yeats gives them the titles "The Descendants of Fianna". Their individual titles of "Orca of the Azure Sea" and "Balmung of the Azure Sky" may also have come from this event.

.hack//SIGN

During the main events of SIGN, Orca is only referred to in passing. Subaru mentions that he, along with Balmung are busy investigating reports of unkillable monsters, but he never actually appears on-screen.

.hack//Games

As soon as Kite logs into The World, Orca brings him to Δ Bursting Passed Over Aqua Field to teach him the basics of the game. Although Orca is the first character to give Kite his Member Address, Orca gets Data Drained by Skeith soon afterwards and falls into a coma. Because of this, he is unusable until Quarantine, when he is revived by Aura to fight Corbenik, the final Phase. Conversations with some of his associates, such as Bob, Linda, and Balmung and his words upon meeting Aura for the first time suggest that Orca had been investigating the rumors about Morganna prior to his run in with Skeith. Balmung states that his goal had been to prove that the rumors were just that: rumors. Unfortunately for him, the rumors had been true.

A few months after Orca is revived, he and Kite are called to Δ Bursting Passed Over Aqua Field by Aura. As they traverse the dungeon to reach Aura, Orca comments he's getting really bad flashbacks. When they reach her, Aura gives the Book of Twilight ~ Daybreak to Kite.

.hack//Another Birth

Orca appears in a vision Mia shows BlackRose, being defeated by Skeith.

.hack//XXXX

As in the Games, Orca is the first person Kite meets upon entering The World. While adventuring with his newbie friend they are approached by Aura, who tries to give Orca a mysterious bracelet. However before Orca can use it Skeith appears. Orca fights against Skeith to try and buy Kite time to escape. But he gets Data Drained in the process, falling into a coma in the real world.

.hack//Unison

In Unison, Orca, along with Kite and Balmung go on a Data Bug hunt. After finding no traces of them, they travel to Net Slum, where they join a party hosted by Helba.

.hack//GIFT

At the beginning of GIFT, Orca PKs Bear, but since their avatars are so similar everybody believes that he was the one PKed instead. Disguised as Bear, he meets with BT who he has an "adult conversation" with. Eventually Bear catches up to him at Helba's hot springs and the two begin to fight. The fight tires them out so they decide to call a truce and relax in the springs. There, Orca confesses that he took Bear's place because he was jealous of his role as a major character. All he'd done during the series was sleep, and he wanted to actually be a part of the plot for once. After hearing this, Bear decides to forgive him.

"I... I want to help Shino! And Haseo!"
— Tabby —

Tabby (タビー) is a Tribal Grappler, a former member of the Twilight Brigade, and Guildmaster of the Paw Pad Squadron.

Online

Appearance

Tabby's avatar is that of a young catgirl with long red hair. She wears a short skirt, a very skimpy pink top and a green jewel covering her navel. Her character is based around the cat girl archetype and she has cat ears and a tail-like ponytail. During combat, she wields a rare set of cat claws that were given to her by Shino. Her wave tattoos are located on her face.

Personality

Tabby has a fairly hyper personality. She seems to enjoy her catgirl appearance and frequently uses cat noises to express emotion. She spends a lot of her time pestering others until she gets a response; generally Haseo, Nazo Grunty, or her mentor Sakisaka. Despite the sometimes cold reactions she gets, she seems to have an unending supply of optimism, and is almost always in a cheerful mood. Even when she's in a bad mood she tries to disguise it by pretending to be cheerful, an act that Haseo and Sakisaka usually fall for.

Offline

Basic Info

Tabby's is a 16 year old schoolgirl named Moe Kubo. She has a bad relationship with the rest of her family, especially her older sister, who as well as being smarter and better than her in school, she has to compete with for attention. Because of this, she doesn't think that anyone believes in her, but Wool reassures her shortly after meeting Kuhn for the first time.

By the end of Roots, it is revealed that Tabby is probably planning to become a nurse as a way to help Shino in real life.

History

.hack//Roots

Tabby was found by Shino while she was still a newbie. Shino took it upon herself to teach Tabby about the basics of the game, and eventually invited her into the Twilight Brigade, making her the first new member in awhile. There, Tabby was introduced to Sakisaka, who became the member in charge of her well being as well as Haseo, who joined shortly after her. Tabby became interested in both Haseo and Shino, but found it difficult to find out much about either of them. When the Twilight Brigade fought against TaN in one of the Lost Grounds, Tabby was the only one who actually enjoyed the aftermath, basking in the fame and notoriety that her Guild had. Her happiness soon faded when the Twilight Brigade was disbanded, due to the sudden disappearance of its leader Ovan.

Realizing that neither Haseo nor Shino were interested in getting close to her, Tabby latched onto Sakisaka, and together they formed the Paw Pad Squadron. But even this didn't last as he decided to quit the game along with some of his real life friends. Her loneliness only increased after Shino was defeated by Tri-Edge and turned into a Lost One. This event made Haseo even more distant to her. Looking for her place in the game, Tabby was eventually introduced to the player Kuhn whose attitude seems to have rubbed off on Tabby. Through Kuhn she was able to befriend some newbies named Cashmere and Wool, who began looking to her as a sort of big sister.

After some encouraging by Phyllo and a new friend named Seisaku, Tabby decided that her purpose in the game was to help Haseo. However, she had no idea how to help him, and Haseo shrugged off all her attempts to get close to him, making her more depressed then ever. Hideyo eventually drove Seisaku away from Tabby after their guild was killed in an attempt to help Haseo fight off a group of PKers organized by Bordeaux. Tabby wandered in depression, until she met Saburou, who tried to cheer her up. The conversation led to Haseo, and Tabby told Saburou that he was a good person at heart. Saburou refused to believe this, so Tabby told her about Shino. Tabby said that Haseo was only trying to help Shino, but the conversation suddenly turned against her, when Saburou asked what Tabby was doing for Shino herself.

Distressed, Tabby ran off to seek advice from Phyllo, who said that Haseo was no longer willing to listen to him and that she was probably the only one who could bring him back. Taking his advice to heart she decided that it was time she started acting on her own as well. Rejecting Seisaku's offer to start a relationship, she finally met with Haseo who had recently been sent back to level one by Azure Kite's Data Drain.

His ego deflated, he told Tabby about Phyllo's death. She tells him that he really is the only one who can save Shino. Haseo implies that he is not the only one. Realizing that Haseo was trying to fix things inside of the game, Tabby told Haseo that she was going to enroll in nursing school so that she could find a cure for Shino on the outside. Haseo told her that by the time she finished school he'd have already rescued Shino, but that she should do what she wanted. Having gained Haseo's support, Tabby proceeded to quit the game, eager to start proving herself in the real world.

.hack//G.U. Games

During Reminisce, Tabby is mentioned by both Hideyo and Seisaku to Haseo. Tabby returns to R:2 in Redemption and joins Haseo's party upon entering the 50th floor of the Forest of Pain event. She tells Haseo that it's her last day in The World, and will be leaving it. In an email to Haseo after the 50th Floor of the Forest of Pain, she hints that she may not be done playing the game.

Antares

"Do you want to get stronger?"
— Antares —

Antares (大火) is a male Blade Brandier and the founder of Icolo, the arena champions guild. He considers Haseo his "apprentice."

Online

Appearance

Antares is a red-skinned man dressed in loose white clothing. He wears a brown cloak on his back and his outfit is accented with robes wrapped around both of his arms. His most noticeable feature is the odd white bird mask he wears at all times. His mask, as well as his general appearance, is based on the Tengu, mythical Japanese creatures that reside in mountains and are said to possess great knowledge in martial matters. He also has the kanji for Tengu on the back of his robe. When fighting, he wields a red sword decorated with flames.

Personality

Antares is a rather eccentric player who plays the part of a combat guru. A former Arena Emperor, he was the original founder of the Emperor's Guild Icolo. However, he passed the title of Guildmaster over to Taihaku after he became disillusioned with Arena combat. As a long time player, he is familiar with most of the long time players of The World, and was a close friend of Phyllo prior to his death. He considers Haseo to be his disciple, and is devoted to transforming him into a powerful warrior.

Offline

Basic Info

In the real world, Antares's player is a 35-year-old man named Mikihisa Ogata (緒方幹久). In his youth he attended an all boys school, and was a wrestler. He now works as the editor of a professional wrestling magazine, and lives in Tokyo with his wife and two daughters, who are 3 and 5 years old.

History

.hack//G.U. Games

Antares first observed Haseo during his initial fights in the Arena. Impressed with his determination and fighting spirit, Antares decided to help Haseo become an Emperor. Introducing himself to Haseo after one of his fights, Antares began teaching him the finer points of Arena combat. When Haseo questioned him about his motives, Antares took him to Icolo's @Home, a Guild Antares had formed for Arena Emperors. After introducing him to Taihaku, Sirius, and Alkaid, Antares told Haseo that his dream for Icolo had been destroyed, and the Guild was filled with nothing but people trying to increase their own egos. He confessed that he believed Haseo was a person who could restore honor to the Arena and the title of Emperor. Shortly before Haseo entered the Demon Palace Tournament, Antares helped him obtain his second Job Extension by feeding him information about the Quest required to get it.

After Haseo began abusing Skeith's power to win Tournament matches, Antares teamed up with Kuhn and Pi to teach him a lesson. Though Haseo was able to win the match, the fight taught him a valuable lesson about power. Following Haseo's victory over Demon Palace Emperor Endrance, Antares attended his coronation party, celebrating by drinking in the real world.

Later, when Haseo entered the Holy Palace Tournament, Antares continued his coaching, assisting him in getting his third Job Extension in the same way he'd helped him get his second. He also acted as the guest commentator for all of Haseo's tournament matches. Following Haseo's victory over Holy Palace Emperor Sirius, Antares rewarded Haseo by giving him his Member Address.

It was then that Antares revealed his true agenda to Haseo. He had actually been asked to help Haseo out by Phyllo, one of his old friends. Disguising himself as Phyllo he called Haseo to the Great Temple of Caerleon Medb and showed him how to unlock the Lost Weapons. He also delivered a letter from Phyllo, written to Haseo shortly before Phyllo's death.

During Sakaki's PK Tournament, Antares was offered a position in the tournament bracket due to his former role as an Arena Emperor. With his skill and experience Antares easily won his first round, and proceeded to defeat Matsu in the second. However in the tournament semifinals he found himself facing Haseo. Neither side held anything back in the fight, and in the end Haseo proved victorious. However, in an attempt to discredit Haseo, Sakaki began spreading rumors that Antares had thrown the match, damaging both his and Haseo's reputations. However Antares was relatively unfazed by this; soon after the fight he invited Haseo to join him in the Chaotic PK certification event. Taking on the role of PKKs, Haseo and Antares fought their way through some of the fiercest PKs The World R:2 had to offer, including former rivals Negimaru and Grein. After completing the event, Antares told Haseo that despite the way the tournament had ended, their fight had still been fair and he had nothing to be ashamed of.

Antares continued to support Haseo throughout his quest, and returned to help fight off Cubia's Gomoras alongside Piros the 3rd, Silabus, and Gaspard at Briona Gwydion the Dragonbein Range

Emma Wielant

"The hand that spun a legend will also become a legend itself."
— Emma Wielant's gravestone —

Emma Wielant (1972-2004) was the author of the Epitaph of the Twilight and played a pivotal role in the origin of The World.

History

Early Life (1972-1995) - Before the Epitaph of Twilight

Emma was born August 8th, 1972 into a rich West German family that ran an old winery near the Rhine. Emma's mother died while she was still at an early age and her father died when she was 18. By her father's will, Emma's uncle became her new guardian and she was granted an inheritance in the form of a trust that she couldn't access until she turned 20. In an attempt to get her inheritance, Emma's uncle offered to legally adopt her, but she saw through him and refused the offer. Unable to access her inheritance at the time, Emma enrolled in a nursing school so she could support herself in the meantime. However, on the morning of Emma's 20th birthday, stress and overwork from having to support herself caused her to cough up blood from her lungs in a case of hemoptysis. The case was a minor one that Emma was able to control and she returned to better health, but she still checked into a health resort in Southern France in accordance with her physician's advice. While staying there, Emma had some type of supernatural experience which led her to pursue studies in spiritual consciousness and existence (anthroposophy)、and the works of Rudolf Steiner. It was then that she began work on the Epitaph.

Late Life (1996-2004) - The Beginning and The End?

In 1996, Emma met a talented German programmer named Harald Hoerwick. Harald was also interested in anthroposophy and was using it to further uncover and develop a relationship between computers and humans. It was their common interest in this field that gave them a chance to meet and upon doing so, Emma developed an interest in Harald's talents while Harald developed an interest in Emma. However, Emma was already involved with another man over 20 years older than her and any love Harald may have had for her would not be returned. Emma's work, the "Epitaph of Twilight," would soon be publicly posted online for a short time with features that prevented computers from making any direct copies. Before Emma could finish her work however, she died in an auto accident while on her way to a meeting with Harald.

Shortly thereafter, Emma's original work was lost as her site was shutdown and Pluto's Kiss wiped out the Internet. Affected by losing Emma, Harald continued his work on the beta version of The World, Fragment, determined not to let Emma's death truly be the end. After Fragment's testing started, rumors about it being based on the Epitaph of Twilight began circulating and even deeper secrets hidden and locked within the game began making themselves known.

Trivia

* Both the English and the Japanese VA of Emma in the games, also did the voices of Helba (in SIGN too) and Kaoru Asaba ("Office Lady") from Liminality.
* Her gravestone reads in German: "Creator of legends, rest here now, as your own legend."

Crim

"If you desire to know the truth, you must also have the courage to accept it."
— Crim —

Crim (クリム) was one of the founders of the Crimson Knights. He is a Long Arm of tremendous skill and power.

Online

Appearance

Crim is a male Long Arm with spiky blue hair. He wears a red jacket and flared red and yellow pants. He keeps his jacket open, revealing his bare chest which is marked with his wave symbol.

Personality

Crim is a very happy-go-lucky player. He enjoys living on the edge and testing his skills against strong monsters. As a self proclaimed defender of justice, he never turns down a chance to help somebody in need, especially not if that person is a pretty girl. He used to be a member of the Crimson Knights, but left when he felt that it was tying him down. He prefers to keep the real world and the game world seperate, and will take breaks from the game if he feels it's getting to be too bothersome. He is close to Subaru, who he founded the Crimson Knights with, and BT, who is his current partner. He has a bit of a rivalry with Silver Knight, though most if it is on Silver Knight's side, not his.

Offline

Basic Info

Crim's player is a Businessman. He spends long hours at the office, and is frequently sent off on business trips to places all around the world. His age is unknown, but he's likely in his late twenties to early thirties.

Hobbies

Playing The World is Crim's main hobby, though he's also a big fan of books. Interestingly, Ryo Sakuma is one of his favorite authors; he frequently uses quotes from his books in the game.

History

.hack//SIGN

Crim first appeared in .hack//SIGN. In the series, it is revealed that he was a starter of Crimson Knights, which comprises players who want to keep the order of The World. Later, Crim found being a Crimson Knights member did not match his personality, therefore, left the group. Even if he had left the Crimson Knights, he still kept a strong link with Subaru. The emotion of Crim to Subaru is not clear, but it seems to be mixture of brotherhood, love and kindness.

When there were rumors of the legendary item Key of the Twilight on BBS, BT, Sora and others decided to find it. However, Crim showed the least interest in it because he had tried finding it long time ago when the rumour first arose but he failed in discovering it. Because of the existence of Tsukasa's rule-breaking power, which shared the same property as the out-law item the Key of Twilight, also being convinced by BT, Crim joined the search for the Key of Twilight. He teamed up with BT in the beginning and finally with others. He mainly was responsible for searching for information on old BBS logs.

Crim is a high level player and he likes helping low level players. His acts are always driven by justice such that he is always seen as a foe or a rival to Sora, who is a PKer.

.hack//Games

Kite first sees Crim as a memory fragment. Later in .hack//Quarantine Kite runs into Crim after traveling to a location where Subaru was rumored to be. Crim informs Kite that Subaru no longer plays The World, and that he was wasting his time looking for her. He said he'd like to help out, but that he had business in the real world to attend to. Before leaving, he let it slip that Kite had become a celebrity in The World. Crim can later be found wandering about the Root Towns. He has numerous Heavy Axeman weapons available to trade, possibly gifts he'd intended to give to Subaru.

.hack//Unison

Crim meets up with most of the .hack gang at a bar in Carmina Gadelica. He tries to give Tsukasa some advice about manly vigor, but is stopped by Mimiru who reminds him that Tsukasa's player is actually a girl, and has no need for that kind of advice. He later travels to Net Slum where he joins a party hosted by Helba.

.hack//GIFT

In GIFT, Crim teams up with Subaru and Silver Knight to find the location of Helba's Hot Springs. After watching Subaru beat up Silver Knight for making an offcolor comment, he states that she's grown strong. After reaching the Hot Springs he's challenged to a fight by Sora. He accepts the challenge and the two begin fighting each other, suspended by wires above the field. Balmung accidently gets caught up in the fight and gets some of his feathers ripped off by Crim's Spear. This causes Balmung to fly into a berserk rage and attack Crim, allowing Sora to slip away. Later, Crim peeps on Subaru, Mimiru and BT as they bathe in the hot springs.

Crim in .hack//Gift.

Trivia

* Crim's title is "The Red Lightning", a possible reference to his appearance.
* Crim apparently has a Rocker Grunty, he was seen riding one in an episode of SIGN.
