The characters of Holo and Lawrence are two of the finest protagonists in anime, and their relationship is one of the most realistic in terms of its development, pace, and believablity despite the fact that one of them is an ancient harvest goddess with wolf ears and a tail! It moves away from the typical "fantasy sword fighting and magical battles" into a more economical style of adventure between the two travelers. Yup, good times, good times.

It showed a different view of the typical fantasy series - this one focused a lot on economical things, and human relationships; but it was set in this fantasy world and they kept it interesting. I heard the books are really good, so I want to check them out as well. For anyone who likes fantasy but wants something "different" I also recommend 12 Kingdoms. One of the BEST animes of all time, and the books for that show are amazing!

I got stalled (due to time, not interest) part way through the second season. I think the world is fascinating, especially the emphasis on old trade economics. And Holo and Lawrence are two great characters. I had a lot of fun watching their relationship develop. One of the better series to watch, imo.

If we are still talking about Spice and Wolf, Funimation has the rights for both seasons; both streaming and home video. Both their own site and Hulu have both series. Netflix has only the first series, but that isn't that unusual, as a number of anime streaming on Netflix fall into that pattern. Netflix has really added very little new streaming anime over the past 12-18 months.
