really this anime is doing well? i thought it was just a .hack/tower of druaga rip off

I don't see how Sword Art Online is a rip-off, considering the original web novel came out around 2001, while .hack came out around the same time and Tower of Druga's anime came out in 2008.

The Tower of Druaga (ドルアーガの塔 Doruāga no Tō?) is a maze-based action role-playing arcade game released by Namco in 1984, in Japan and the United States. It was one of the first action role-playing games, along with Dragon Slayer. It is the first game in the Babylonian Castle Saga series, based on Babylonian mythology.

The Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk (ドルアーガの塔 〜the Aegis of URUK〜 Doruāga no Tō ~ji Ījisu obu Uruku~?) and its sequel, The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk (ドルアーガの塔 ~the Sword of URUK~ Doruāga no Tō ~za Sōdo obu Uruku~?), is an anime TV series, created by Gonzo, and is an animated continuation of Namco's Babylonian Castle Saga video game franchise which began as an arcade game, The Tower of Druaga, originally released in 1984.

Gwerl please.
The Tower of Druaga came out before you were even born.

And in what world did SAO come out in 2001?
Reki Kawahara wrote the first volume in 2002 as contribution for the
ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Game Novel Prize,
but refrained from sending it in due to exceeding the page limit.
Thus he published it as a web novel using the pseudonym Fumio Kunori.

Though I also don't agree with people saying SOA ripped off anything from those two.
SAO and .Hack came out around the same time so I don't think there was enough time
for any "ripping off" to take place. And even if there was,
it would've caused a controversy considering they are two anime with the similar theme.
If it wasn't a big deal back then, why make it one now?

Some people will just find reasons to hate, I guess.

Yes, "a maze-based action role-playing arcade game released by Namco in 1984", it was a action game, that was why I stated the "anime" that was based off the game. If we're talking about the game by your statement, we might as well include every action game that came out before SAO. I named the "anime" of Tower of Druga because I don't see how tower of druga, the "game" relates to SAO and .hack, considering it's a "real" game but the other two being an "light novel or anime" with the concept of a game.
And sorry if I got the year SAO was released off by 1 single year, at least I still got the part where I said .hack coming out around the same time right which was my point, being no one ripped off anyone else.

Trapped in a game? Tron. 1982.

And that's just a variation of being trapped in a TV, book, another world, all of which came before it. It's not a rippoff. It's called being influenced by what came before.

Getting back to the topic, I hope the series covers most if not all of what's in the books.

Agreed. I'm hoping they finish vol. 1 in its first season and start vol. 3 in the next one.

Considering Accel World has gone thru almost 3 novels in 17 eps. I'd suspect 25 eps will cover thru volume 5 of SAO. I hope they continue both animes for a while as they tie in directly with each other.

Someone being sent to a feudalistic kingdom outside of their own world? Clearly a rip-off of Mark Twain's 1889 novel "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".

Yeah, yeah, I know. That's one hell of a stretch

It's difficult to come up with an original idea, and even if an idea had been done before it doesn't mean a writer can't come with an original slant on it. Japanese anime would be pretty screwed if the first anime to do the "Boy meets Shinigami" storyline had copyrighted it.

I'm enjoying SAO. It's definitely kicked up a gear in episodes 4&5 and I'm looking forward to episode 6 (whenever it turns up)

I like .hack, but SOA is way better in my opinion. Not an easy thing for me to say. But, it's true. I don't really care about ToD, I thought it was boring personally. Nine episodes in, did little to convince me otherwise.

SOA has kept my interest since the first episode. Even if the odd episode feels rushed. It doesn't really surprise me it's doing well. The show had a strong start. And the light novels look to be popular.

.hack is also really aged though well if your talking about sign atleast.
