Youth music: out of control?

Something I've noticed to be quite common among the music popular in the books of today's youth is that a song doesn't seem to be popular unless it
A) drops an F-bomb at least once
B)makes a vauge or blunt sexual refference
or
C)flames or bad-mouths some sort of general authority figure such as a police officer, teacher, or parental figure.

Now I personally don't like this one little itty bit. I blame it on rap music getting to popular. Today's media is mainly dominated by corporations who would do anything, no matter who it hurts or how many children it influences. Those corporations most likely noticed how popular rap music is among children, who are impressionable enough to buy whatever shit gets waved in front of their nose in an ad. They assumed it was the vulgarities, and encouraged their artists to use stronger material in their music, and thus all youth music has been soiled. That's why I hate rap music so much. But that's just my personal opinion, what's yours?

I agree to an extent. Most rap lyrics are just horrible and promote impressionable people to act inappropriately. You have these songs about 'being a pimp' and mistreating others; you might say it's harmless but it really isn't. Many kids gain some of their morals and outlooks on life through these lyrics. That would be great if the lyrics had a good message but most of the music you hear (in any genre) simply have uninspiring lyrics. I myself don't care much for lyrics as much as I care for the tune/melody, since I find most lyrics to be either shallow or just pointless. To be fair, I'm the furthest thing from a music expert but I think most rap songs have a detrimental effect on our youth.

I put a lot of stock in lyrics. To me that's one of the main points of music, to convey a message or emotion. That's the #1 reason I can't stand rap. It's either complaining (as Jay said) or encouraging people towards bad behavior (as BK said). The #2 reason I don't like rap is just that I really don't like the beat and such.

I can understand singing about hardships or bad times, and that's why I have slightly more respect for rappers who talk about things like that, but you never see any positive messages in the music. Glorifying "pimping", drugs, and violence isn't exactly positive.

For me, not only do rap lyrics give a bad message, it also just furthens the racial issue already in existence (especially in America. I don't know about any racial situations in other countries). I mean, the other day I heard a song that had used a racial slur several times, and I was told that's the clean version (I don't know, or care to know the title)! But, I think there are some modern songs that are okay. I personally, am not too much into modern music (but due to interacting with others, it doesn't annoy me as much as it used to).

Truly I think 99% of rap is dreadful, not for the music (which i think has a lot of potential), but the worthless lyrics.

It's a part of the self destruction of black culture. Ignorance and violence are exemplified. Crime is romanticized. Women are objectified. Virtually every component of it is destructive. With shock rock music, it's understood it's all just for the hell of it, very few people ever take it seriously. Rap isn't that way, it's a lifestyle that artists and fans do their best to live up to. Take a look at all the problems in the black community - the role models of their youth are all violent criminals.

It's also a destructive force to the english language, but that's more a pet peeve of mine.

Fortunately, rap sales are going down. But I doubt it's going to leave anytime soon. I think it's really a sign of where we are as culture as much as it is anything else. I really believe the US is Rome in it's final days unless we start aggressively attacking our problems. Oh well, I'll probably bail out and move to europe when I graduate, like a rat of a sinking ship.

I hate today's music. I'm a christian, so you'd think my friends that are christian would atleast try to listen to music that isn't too trashy, but it's very opposite. They listen to the most sluttiest, vulgar music and don't even realize it. It annoys me whenever I'm in a friend's car. I guess people never really pay attention to lyrics.

I totally agree with y'all. Sure I'll admit that I like some rap, though I hate most today's music. Kids in my school always listen to crap like "50 Cent" & "Paris Hilton" & whatever..seriously..but whatever, they choose to listen to whatever I guess.

I don't really care what's in the music or shit like that, example is music about peace, I really can give two shits less if it was about peace or killing your neighbor, so long as it sounds good I'll listen to it.

Rap, however.. Sounds awful. To those whom say they like "old school" rap or some gay shit like that, seriously you are retarded, they are the exact same as now.

However, instead of having one song devoted to saying how there is racism, they say how hard it was growing up in the ghetto.

Which it wasn't hard. They wouldn't know either.

Bottom line is, no matter whatever a song is about, if it sucks, it sucks.

Rap, sucks.

Srry man but rap is awesome. And ur trying to say all rap is like that? So not true.

Hmm...I don't know what song this is but I've heard it somewhere..

"I'm hot cuz you're not...I'm hot cuz you're not...this is why I'm hot...this is why I'm hot....I'm hot cuz you're not.."

Greaaatt lyrics. They pretty much repeat that the whole song.

As a fellow christian, I put up with the same crap every day. A lot of my black friends and even my brother listen to all the stupid hip hop sludge that's pumped out into the cesspool of secular entertainment. That's why I don't listen to popular music. Even rock is starting to follow this ridiculous trend. If you don't believe me, buy a Fall Out Boy album. The whole thing really disgusts me.

MIMS - This Why I'm Hot

Anyways, that's the hook. Of course it's repetitive. While I agree with some posts, I disagree with others. Most lyrics are complaints, and such, I like rap. Mainstream, commercial, franchise rap is very much garbage. But their are diamonds in the pile of coals.

Rap sux its not singing how is it a form of music???

You know all rap is, is the "Rappers" life story with a beat.
I know more then I want to know about rap and some of the songs get stuck in my head its usually the ones I don't like that I remember. I listen to it all the time and not cause I want to my sis and brother-in-law and others I know like It and its funny cause I hear this alot "I don't like the song I just like the beat" Then cut the lyrics out these fools get rich cause you buy their CD to listen to just the beat.

I'll stick to what I listen too which is everything cept rap
