Country really. It's really awesome if you listen to the right people, not just Taylor Swift (who isn't really country anymore but is still called it)
Also Pop Punk, but I think that's just people being picky about how they look (MCR for example)

The genre I don't like is Country, Religious, and Spanish. These are my least interest.

I'd say classical music is the most underrated, since almost everyone can think of a handful of songs that they really enjoy from some of their favorite shows, movies, and video games but never mention when discussing music.

Hmm... Here in Denmark it must be hardstyle, hardcore, metal etc. I don't know how many who are listening to it, but no one talks about it, in public what so ever. It's kind of sad, but at the same time it's awesome to do something that not everybody does.

Probably jazz. Regardless from which country it originates it doesn't seem like most folks have a jazz CD at the ready here in the States.

Hardcore music, and Japanese Hardcore.

They're super catchy tunes with fast beats, and not a lot of people seem to know about it.

How is Hardcore underrated?
Every scene-kid on the block listens to Hardcore-music.

No they don't. I don't know a single scene kid who listens to Black Flag, Fugazi, Integrity, From Ashes Rise, etc.

You do realize that Hardcore Punk didn't stop evolving, right? Hardcore Punk and Post-Hardcore Punk is very much alive today.
It's just that it's more in the form of stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W-R17PCK_k
Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqwgM3G96YM
Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_6ItxioUco

Sure, the old school type of Hardcore Punk still exists as well, but they also have modern incarnations and evolved forms. And those forms are what's super popular in the scene-community.

Half of the people commenting don't seem to understand the difference between "underrated" and "unpopular". Underrated implies that the music is much better than the general opinion of it. If a band isn't very popular but has a following mainly consisting of diehard fans (Frontline Assembly, Marillion, Earth, etc.), that's not underrated, that's just unpopular.

That being said, I'd have to go with Black Metal as being underrated. So many people fail to understand that there are many sub-styles within the spectrum of BM. People hear stuff like Enslaved, Immortal, and Mayhem and go "ew". While the same person might hear Drudkh, Wolves in the Throne Room, Burzum, or Caladan Brood and have their opinions changed forever.

Progressive, without a doubt.
Although it is merely a description that can be applied to several different genres, it is universally overlooked. Which is a real shame.

I'm not sure if Steam-punk is a genre but I have to say that.
