I've just finished clannad It is quite sad but I'd recommend it to anyone as one of the best anime I've ever seen. And it does have a happy ending :-)

No anime has ever made me cry more than Grave of the Fireflies, but Gunslinger Girl always gets me a little depressed. Clannad of course is up there with them.

there have been plenty of anime that made me cry, but Clannad was the only one that ever actually made me depressed. not just once, but TWICE.
Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide it was actually worse when Ushio started coming down with the same symptoms as Nagisa and eventually died, because up until then, there was no indication that anything like that would happen. I thought maybe he would be able to settle down and start living his life again with Ushio, but then she starts to get sick. |

The most depressing: Grave of the Fireflies or Aoi Bungaku.

Wolfs Rain - my friend and I literally sat there crying for 2 hours after it was finished.
Clannad - THE TEARS. OH GOD.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - By the end of it, I had run out of tears because I cried too much.

Episode 12 (Or maybe it's 11, I cant remember now), of Saikano. Had me crying hard... and I hated the guy who sprung it on me without warning. lol

Maybe this is because I just finished rewatching it again, but Puella Magi Madoka Magica Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide Sayaka's tragic love story of trading her soul to the Devil for an unrequited love. Kyouko shattering her own soul to end her friends suffering. Homura's loyalty and reliving the same month over and over again, and watching her closest friend(s) die over again because she couldn't change their fate. Madoka's great sacrifice to save all magical girls from their twisted fate, but having her physical existence erased in the process. Nobody remembers her. I just about lost it the first time I saw her brother draw her picture in the sand, but her mom thought she was an imaginary friend. Oh. My. Gosh.
Angel Beats- It mad me cry for being happy and being sad. Fantastic show. The ending gets me every time.
AnoHana- Spoiler Alert! Click to show or hide I kept myself from crying the ENTIRE series until the very end where she is disappearing and says that she is playing hide and seek. When she says "You found me," I started bawling. And when Jintan is reading her goodbye letter and she says "I love you, the kind where I want to be your wife." |

#1 Clannad After Story - during THAT scene (and we all know the one I'm talking about) I was balling my eyes out, just repeating the words 'no no no no' over and over. If the opening credits song comes up on my random playlist I get choked up.
#2 Angel Beats - for an anime that moves so quickly I was suprised how endearing the side characters stories were. And when you find out why the series is called 'Angel Beats', it tears your heart out.
#3 Kanon - each of the stories just got sadder and sadder.
#4 Elfen Lied - this was one of the few anime where every other episode I was saying "OH MY GOD, I can't believe they went there."
I'm sure theres more I'm missing and some of the ones from this thread are now on my 'must watch' list.
P.S. Now that I'm all depressed I'm gonna watch some Nanaka 6/17 to make myself feel better.
