Watch Clannad!! The first season is really light hearted, don't listen to the people who say they thought it was stupid you have to watch it to learn about the characters. I loved it it'll really grow on you. It's the After Story that really throws you for a loop but you won't regret it. I had no idea going into it it was one of the first anime I watched

I agree, watch Clannad and Clannad After Story. You won't be disappointed. Personally, it wasn't the most sad show I've seen - I've seen less melodramatic but certainly more depressing shows than I can count that just have dismal atmospheres about them. Though more people can relate to Clannad than those shows, or appreciate them.

I'll third this (or however many times we're up to now). The thing is, if you don't watch Clannad first you're not emotionally invested in the characters enough for Afterstory to have the proper impact. Clannad starts out as just another haremish story but it quickly turns into a heart warming tale that is a must to see!

I agree that Clannad After Story is probably the saddest but anyone remember Captain Harlock - Arcadia of my Youth?
That was sooooo depressing

Quick list of anime that made me cry.

Saikano. Reason: The series wouldn't let you bond with ANY character without the show deciding to kill them.

Digimon Tamer. Reason: Juri suffered so much!

One Piece. Reason: WHY DID THE BOAT HAVE TO DIE?!

Grave of the Fireflies. Reason: Opening scene...downhill from there.

Magic Knight Rayearth. Reason: ...I'm not spoiling you the ending.

I'm surprised no one chose Aoi Bungaku (or if someone already mentioned it, I'm sorry).

The first 4 episodes called "No Longer Human" (the first story out of 6 shorts taken from classic Japanese literature) tops in terms of straight-on depression.

If anyone needs convincing to watch it, it's directed by Morio Asaka, the director of NANA, Chobits, and Chihayafuru (first one), with designs by Takeshi Obata (illustrator of the Death Note manga) and Masanori Shino (character designer of Black Lagoon and Crest of the Stars).

Definitely Hakouki! So good, but SO sad! I loved all the characters, even Chikage, so hated to see them die; albeit heroically. Also loved Hotarubi No Mori E. Absolutely beautiful story, very much a fairytale, but also bittersweet.

Yeah, it's unfortunate it's not as popular as other Madhouse productions.

I love sad animes the most. If something can make me cry then it has to be good. At a minimum these animes got me misty eyed

Ef a Tale of Melodies - I actually like Memories better but Yuko's story really hurt. I will readily admit that I was hoping for a deus ex machina moment to no avail.
Anohana - its already been said by plenty of people here
Clannad - ditto
H20 - good lord is this a rough anime to watch. The main female protagonist basically gets crapped on for the whole series, particularly in the early episodes. I actually felt myself getting angry watching it
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia - I was crying in the last episode
5 centimeters per second - one of my all time favorite animes

but the show that I found to be the most depressing is:

Air - I was literally stunned with how the show ended. After finishing the series, I immediately did a web search to see if my hypothesis of the ending was similar to how others perceived it and unfortunately it was. I say unfortunately because the ending is truly that depressing. My God I was in a state of shock for like 2 weeks afterwards. It is the only series that I own that I have not viewed more than once. Every time I see the box I have to look away.
