This is going to sound weird, but, Gungrave. The way the story played out related closely to sad events that took place in my life. Haha.

Just watched this in my Japanese history class for the first time and it didn't really get to me.

As for me it will always be End of Evangelion.

1. well Clannad+AfterStory made me nuts for weeks, specially when tomoya cried over his daughter when he tried to tell her about Nagisa
2. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is one good one, yuki dying despite their efforts to go home, the thought of a mass calamity, and many people dying is quite heavy.
3. The grave of the fireflies is sad period. its a classic, i love the story line very much, although...

4. I'm' yet to finish watching Angel Beats

Kite (Not Kite Liberator thats on CR)
Ai no Kusabi (the original)

Both had the saddest ending of any anime I have ever seen. Peacemaker made me a little sad too.

Up til' now, for me is Clannad After Story of course, followed by Angel Beats!, but I think LB Refrain will become the saddest anime.
Just you wait...

To this day, Clannad: After Story. No other show, movie, book or game has ever made me cry like that show did.

Well many People blamed It to the aunt, but watching the 2005 live action version of it, it's quite understandable why she did it (viewing from the viewpoint of the their cousin of course).

I forgot to add Nabari no Ou that also was a sad anime.
