I don't understand why people keep saying Angel Beats! is sad. It's not. It would be sad if none of them overcame their terrible pasts to move on, but they all are able to find peace. That's profoundly and intrinsically happy to me.

Valid point, I think people are equating emotional with sad.
Eh I think many people consider it bittersweet, as in happiness mixed with sadness. Just because the characters find peace doesn't mean that there also isn't a sadness in it as though they are able to come to terms with their lives and move on, it can at the same time be considered sad that they in effect lose the knowing bonds (as opposed to any metaphorical "soul bonds") they gained on their trip to that point. Is one not allowed to feel both happy and sad if their horribly suffering grandparent died and is no longer in pain, their best friend reconciles with their family at the cost of forever losing contact with them, or the person they've been in love with for years finds another truly good person to make them happy?

You make a good point, however I think that up until the end the characters have been living the "bitter" part of the bittersweet narrative. We are allowed to experience that, and seeing them all able to overcome it brings the "sweet" part to both the characters and us, the viewers. And because the show ends on the sweet part, that is why I argue that it is intrinsically a joyful show, not a sad one.

Again, I do think you made a good point, I just can't really call Angel Beats! sad, in light of the way I just described I view it. I'm not crying sad tears at the end, I'm crying happy tears.

Mine would have to be Angel Beats, and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. The ending of Angel Beats was so sad and the last couple of episodes of The Pet Girl of Sakurasou had me tearing up.

I would have to say eflen lied. Sure, there were some funny parts to lighten the mood, but the story overall was very sad.

Grave of the Fireflies. For me, I just kinda watched it and without feeling too much at all... then the ending happened.

Even worse, an anime club decided to have a marathon anime showing and this was stuck in the middle of it. After seeing the ending, not one of the fans gathered had the will to keep watching anything else that night.

I'd have to say Grave of the Fireflies as well - utterly heartwrenching, and not just the ending, but all through it. Very well done, grabs and twists your heart.

One I would also put down, not quite on the same level, but haven't seen it mentioned, is Blue Drop, for the ending.

I see way too many Angel Beats in here, honestly Chrno Crusade has got to be the single most soul destroying anime out there. Seriously, watch it and tell me you didn't lose a part of your soul. Most terribly sad ending ever....

Oh man...can't believe they'd do something like that. Pub/group showing is rough... almost always needs to be the last show.
(along with it should go warnings of its emotional side so that people can leave ahead of time if they want).

While I've not seen the Clannad/Angel Beats story...(yet...kinda scared to with all that's been talked up).
GotF is my biggest tearjerker. So much is packed into the movie..

I would say both Anohana and Clannad After Story are the saddest anime that i have seen. Anohana had me teary eyed throughout the whole last episode. I cried around three times throughout Clannad After Story, its just so emotional and i was so attached to the characters.
