Do you mean Clannad?
If so I agree, but Air is sadder.

Most of the ones already mentioned, plus one I didn't see mentioned: Noein. There were some quality issues with that one so far as the sound and animation that held it back from being as good as it could've been, quite a few "this is cheesy" moments, the main male character was annoying as heck, but it was still a good story, and incredibly sad, I thought.

But the one that depressed me the most: NANA, I think because it was so completely relatable, no supernatural elements/as of yet unproven scientific theories in play, more or less regular people set in modern times rather than a post-apocalyptic future like Now and Then, Here and There or a war-torn past like Grave of the Fireflies. And what really got to me was how such seemingly small decisions on non-rockstar Nana's part could be viewed as leading to everything going to hell, then just circumstances and I guess what you could call pride for rockstar Nana and Ren. There were so many scenes in that one that were just painful, like the one near the end when Nobu and non-rockstar Nana are on opposite sides of the door...eesh.

And to think the manga's even harsher, from what I've heard. Never been able to read it.

Anohana's on my list to watch, but now I'm a little afraid to...

Go grab a guest pass and go watch it now, here on Crunchyroll. I'm serious. You NEED to watch it. It's actually more bittersweet than sad... and that's what makes it so good. Bittersweet is a much more intense emotion.

If you end up liking Anohana, go check out Toradora (made by the same people), whose last half has the same sort of feel, and has a more happy ending.

I don't like watching too many sad anime because my mom has depression and I am trying my best to avoid getting it as I grow older. :/

The saddest I have watched was Full Moon wo Sagashite. I went into a 3 day depression once it was over too.

Don't read that if you plan on watching it yourself.

I totally agree! I'm so glad that someone else mentioned Nana... I thought it was just me.
