I don't understand why people keep saying Angel Beats! is sad. It's not. It would be sad if none of them overcame their terrible pasts to move on, but they all are able to find peace. That's profoundly and intrinsically happy to me.

Valid point, I think people are equating emotional with sad.

I would say Clannad but it's been said a bunch of times already. I guess you could say that Higurashi/Kai is pretty sad when you actually realize whats going on, and see it through a certain characters perspective. Makes me sad thinking about how that would be.

Yeah, that seems to be exactly it. From what I've heard of Clannad, it's not necessarily sad, either, just emotional. I've never watched it though, so I can't really say.

Barefoot Gen.
It was so emotionally wrenching that ,while I would like to view it again, (it's a movie, not a series) I haven't been able to in years, I just know it was painful.

I, also, will have to say Clannad After Story.

But for another I would have to say Lamune. I really enjoyed Lamune but it was pretty sad.

I cried for like the whole last 3 episodes of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. So much that I was going to puke. I thought that was possible one of the saddest ones I've seen recently.

Eh I think many people consider it bittersweet, as in happiness mixed with sadness. Just because the characters find peace doesn't mean that there also isn't a sadness in it as though they are able to come to terms with their lives and move on, it can at the same time be considered sad that they in effect lose the knowing bonds (as opposed to any metaphorical "soul bonds") they gained on their trip to that point. Is one not allowed to feel both happy and sad if their horribly suffering grandparent died and is no longer in pain, their best friend reconciles with their family at the cost of forever losing contact with them, or the person they've been in love with for years finds another truly good person to make them happy?
