I just watched Plastic Memories based on the recommendations here and it definitely hits the feels.

But it might not necessarily of been as sad as you think if you pay close attention. ;)

Also this is a real spoiler, if you read this it will ruin the show for you... So no clicking until you've watched it, ok?

But yeah, very good Anime. Everyone that likes a good romance should watch it in my opinion.

Any of the large Key/KyotoAni shows because of their endings(ignoring Air of course). I personally thought Clannad and Kanon were extremely bitter sweet anime. If we count visual novels in this I would add Little Busters and Rewrite to the list (Neither's anime adaptation came close to the emotional roller coaster of the novel it was based on). Also, I would add stein's;gate to my list, and if we also can count the Visual Novel then it goes further up my list. (In the S;G novel they spent a lot more time on the implications and the agony of having to choose between Kurisu and Mayuri. Also, Moeka's route was fucking intense and sad.)

Anohana is of course another big one. Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso was extremely sad and resonated well with me as a musician. Grave of the Fireflys is yet another one that I would add to my list. Shinsekai Yori would be another one that I would say had a decently emotional ending. Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku was an extremely brutal anime and certainly evoked those kinds of emotions.

Also cant forget both 5 cm per sec and Kimi ga no ne which were both heart rending in their own ways.

I think I answered this already, but the saddest would be 'Your Lie In April', and Angel Beats.

Forest Fairy Five is pretty sad. I've watched three episodes and cried during each one.

Kimi no Na Wa. I mustve cried about 9 times watching it. I loved everything about the movie.
For a series, probably Your lie in April

There was this one slice of life anime I saw in 2006 or so love story I forgot the name. But it was sadder than the one with the girl name tiger or tiga. Anyway, there are many animes with sad episodes and death parade was one of them. That episode where the kid found out it was the officer who could have prevented his sister's rape. Awesome episode and the victim was both of them was made for an exciting plot.

I still need to watch Kimi no Na Wa. I hear only great things about it and it sounds like something that would tear me up inside.

Compared to 5cm per second, Kimi no Na Wa is an upbeat movie. Both movies are created by Shinkai Makoto. And personally I like the former better. It is not only sad, but realistically sad.
