http://www.nationstates.net/

I've been on this site managing my own silly nation for over 6 years now and the fun has never ceased. You basically run a country by making decisions on daily issues which, when enacted, will influence the three facets of your nation: civil rights, economy, and political freedoms. Depending on the level of freedoms in each of these facets relative to each other, your nation will be categorized by the World Assembly (similar to the real United Nations) as one of twenty-seven categories depicted in the ideo-cube below.

At NationStates, you can make your own custom flag, state your national moto, name your currency, and recognize a national animal. Depending on your decision on certain issues, you can unlock other features that enable you to name a national leader, name your nation's capital, and recognize a national religion. When your nation's population reaches 500 million, you are eligible to create your own national classification other than one you choose at the start of the game (you can also change this later on but your choices are limited to the preset in game).

You can add nations to your dossier to keep track happenings in those nations. You can telegram other nations. It's the equivalent of the PM system. Sometimes they may be formal invitations from other nations to join their region especially when you just joined since you are first located in one of several gateway regions like the Pacific.

You can also establish your own region, where your nation and other nations can reside in. The founder can also password-protect the region or eject and ban nations so you have control over who can join and remain in the region. Embassies between two regions may be established as well and you can have as many of these as you want. Regions may also be added into your dossier.

Finally you may apply your nation to join the World Assembly. Here you can vote on WA resolutions that either stems from the general assembly or the security council, which will affect all WA member nations and influence your nation's three facets.

There are different kinds of people who play at NationStates. You can go at it for fun and the laughs as in my case. The nation I made, Aqua Regia, was intended to be semi-formal but everything else associated with it is a collection of parodies from Bleach and Lord of the Rings among other things as seen in the nation's factbook and the region where it resides in, Aizengard.

Others take it more formally. There are many regions who have their own community of message boards that carry out joint ventures in the game's international stage within the NationStates forums. Here people can role-play their nations that set up international incidents, global economics and trade, etc. This is the place where nations can carry out their nation's agendas actively. It is also the cause for most measures passed in the WA's security council that either commend or condemn nations based on the nations' reputation from role-play in the forums.

I don't have the time to set my nation up actively on the international stage but the simulation is fun for me nontheless. The major component of the game lies with the decisions you make on the daily issues. NationStates does have humorous bent, but that's just because international politics is so inherently funny. I recommend looking at the site FAQ if anyone is interested in this online simulation game. And one more thing, your nation will cease to exist if you don't log in after 30 days or so unless you set it up for vacation mode. If your nation ceased to exist, you can reactivate your nation again and you don't start from scratch. It will be as it was the last time you logged in. Also if you have created a region and your nation ceased to exist, your region will disappear completely and you'll have to set it up again.

So I'd like to hear people's opinion. How would you "run" your own nation? What kinds of ideology would you like to apply? You can both bring froward what you'd do seriously or what you'd do just for the laughs.

Well i play Civilization 5 a lot and you run your own nation.
Idk about ideology. Part of me wants to say benevolent totalitarian, but those don't exist.

How could anyone NOT choose psychotic dictatorship. It's clearly the best way to get things done.

haha. I play this game but I don't play this much now.

anyhow, I'm a psychotic dictator who does as she sees best. I got tired of trying to be democratic and seeing that everyone got equal things.

I started playing yesterday, and I'm a Left-leaning College state. Superb Civil Rights, Strong economy, and "some" political freedoms. If I get political freedoms up, it'll become anarchy, and I'll be better than all of you.

Psychotic Dicatorship is great:

You can take all the wealth from 99% of the people and give it to 1%, You can lock up and torture anyone who disagrees with you for years, you can place bugs and spy on your people without any petty legal restrictions. You can go to war whenever you want.

(probably misquoted since I did it from memory) -- Sasha Baron Cohen, The Dictator.

There's a category called "benevolent dictatorship" if your civil and economic freedoms are relatively high while the political freedom is relatively low.

so it's a three axis system?

freedom to spend money as one wishes?
Freedom to have a say in government policies?
and freedom to do what one wants with ones personal life?

trouble I have with that is that they are usually interlinked, how much say do you have in your personal life and economic freedom if you have no say in government policy?

Hmmmm, which is better: right-wing utopia or manned B-52 Boeing Stratofortresses loaded with tthe requisite # of H-bombs, classified instructions, codebooks, flying about unfettered and un-noticed from point A to point B? Sure hope those bomb release mechanisms really work on demand and don't require a Slim Pickens sit-in to ride those rascally bombs to the intended destination objectives. Hahaha..lock and load!

Exactly, that's why I put up that diagram as well to help visualize where a particular category stands relative to the 3 facets. Now each of those facets have 15 levels of freedom, from outlawed to corrupted (or imploded to frightening in the case of economy). You don't exactly know for sure at what combination of levels of freedom produces a particular category but at the very least you can simplify the levels of freedom as low, moderate, and high.

So using the above diagram, anarchy results in all 3 freedoms as high. Benevolent dictatorship results in high personal, high economic, and low political. Authoritarian democracy results in low personal, low economic, and moderate political. Capitalist paradise results in moderate personal, high economic, and moderate political. All other categories follow this rule.
