Outrage at “No Japs Allowed” Korean Cafe
Posted 8/23/12 , edited 8/23/12

Korean net cafe signage informing patrons that the establishment enforces a strict “No Japs Allowed” policy – unless the prospective customer shouts “Dokdo is Korean territory!” three times – is currently attracting much attention online.
The sign was introduced by a South Korean net cafe in response to the continued existence of Japan and its nefarious insistence that the sovereignty of the islands in question should be determined by impartial UN adjudicators, and was soon proving popular on major Korean forums (although the absence of Japanese wording did not escape comment).
As with Japan and most of East Asia, Korea has no real laws against racial discrimination, let alone any official willingness to enforce them, and the sort of xenophobia Korea is known for makes even the likes of Japan look like a European-style multi-cultural paradise.
The Japanese Internet is as ever full of kind words for their excitable peninsular brethren and their unique approach to fostering goodwill amongst the Yamato, not least thanks to their mighty president’s recent and highly successful charm offensive:

“These guys are insane…”
“Who would go there anyway?”
“Nobody is going to Korea anyway, so who cares what they get up to.”
“Please do it over here in the pachinko parlours!”
“What a crude people.”
“Nice move – nobody who dislikes Korea would be going there anyway, so the only ones who’ll see this are the ones who didn’t dislike the place, not a state of affairs likely to continue with such a welcome.”
“More anti-Japanese marketing?”
“Could you actually get way with this in Japan?”
“If only they’d put this up at immigration.”
“This sort of crass racism only exposes you to ridicule.”
“Not embarrassed at all by this racist marketing of their cafe?”
“Not the first time they have been putting up ‘no Japanese’ signs…”

What's the point of posting this? It's not going to create any meaningful dialogue particularly on an anime site. There is no way of telling if it's authentic. There's plenty of anti-Korean racist media and public policy in Japan as well. Highlighting some absurd racist sign of questionable authenticity is not productive.

Japan was treating South Korea like shit for decades. If anything, this is relatively harmless.

That's an offensive understatement.

Everyone has been treating everyone else like shit for a few thousand years. Standing on different sides of a border, living on a neighboring island, worshiping another religion, jealous of thy neighbors property it goes on and on. Only a few countries actually try to be nice to everyone, most don't give a shit about you if you're not one of them.

All 3 Japanese people in Korea are crying a river and all 20 [insert race]-Koreans are shamed by the racism. Who cares? Befriend an Asian person long enough and you'll discover that all Asians pretty much hate each other and have established a social hierarchy for themselves.

I'm Korean. Biggest awkward turtle.
Personally I have nothing against Japanese people.
Although in Korea, specifically Seoul. I've heard of clubs where foreigners are rejected entry and/or charged for certain things when Koreans aren't.
I guess that's just how it goes.
Even in Japan there are some bars and places like that with signs that state "No Foreigners" or "Japanese only".
I heard a funny story of someone who had been to Japan, a foreigner who speaks/read Japanese, and she went to a place where the door had a sign on it. In Japanese it read "If you can read Japanese please enter though the yellow door" and then, underneath, in English it read "Yellow door is jammed shut, do not use"
^Okay, that's not exactly funny but you can see how it can be taken humorously.

If the cafe is in Korea, what's the problem? It's their country, if they don't want it to be multi-cultural, that's up to them. The Japanese can't complain, it's not their country. Asians are all the same race anyway.

Chick-fil-a now this stupid shit. Tell me since when are restaurants suitable arenas for political discussion? Furthermore we all know this is stupid so why make a thread? Sigh* we need some sort of section to post useless random shit that no one cares about so we don't have to sort through it all.

lol I have friends from Korea, Japan, and China and they all hate the hell out of each other because of their background. Seeing this is no surprise at all.

The cafe is in Korea. Not Japan. The Japanese people have nothing to complain about. Asians are all of the same race, with only minor physical differences from each country.

Some random internet cafe in some obscure part of Korea puts up a sign not allowing Japanese people. How is this even newsworthy?

This is bad, but I wish Japan would mention all the bad things THEY did/STILL do.

Come on...In Japan there are still places like this with signs and stuff that say "No Foreigners" or "Japanese only". Not to mention the actual sings they hold up telling all foreigners to go home...Or the fact that they still hide their atrocious War Crimes...Or the fact that they still don't show all the stuff they did in their school books but want to mention everyone's elses problems...
