If your friends want to go and label you with a stereotype, then they're not your friends.

Anyway, what Raiderdx said is true. Who cares?

You'll find most people are a bit weird, it's not always a bad thing though.

I feel for ya, bud! All but 1 of my buddies hate the stuff! And almost everyone at my high school who watches anime is a geek/nerd. So I suppose that makes me a geek too! Oh well! Although you really shouldn't care about it! Whenever I tell people I'm an anime/manga freak they either say "really? you don't look like you do!" or they say "I am too!!" But whatever! I'm not really looking for people's approval! And you shouldn't either!

1. If that's the case, you post as if you're drunk all the time, but then again UCSB is a party school so makes sense. Haha jk it's not a big deal.
2. Like everyone else has been saying, it's not something to be super embarrassed about. I mean ofc the people who go around flaunting anime are known as "weird" but then again anyone that's flaunting anything overly is known as "weird" -.- I know a ton of people who watch anime that are normal in college, the only thing is that you would never know because they don't flaunt it around.

Most I've met IRL and are pretty big on it are fucking freaks. I have yet to meet one person that is hardcore and not a complete social retard.

Aw, same with me. No one here likes or even watch Anime. All the Anime they know are Naruto, DBZ, Bleach, and that's mostly it which I don't really count because they're mainstream, but they are good though. Anyway, I'm lucky enough to have two friends who actually watch Anime. It's cool and fun. :3

I think it seems like most fans of anime you meet are weird because most of the 'normal' people who happen to like anime will not reveal that they like anime. I am half Mexican and I pretty much look like I run with a gang (because of my build and facial hair/style...) so most people would probably never guess I like anime. Even then, only a very select few who even know me know that I like anime.

Another reason for the common impression that anime fans are mostly weird is because people remember the most memorable things (sounds obvious I know...). Honestly, who would stick out in your head more, joe schmoe who happens to like anime or raving fanboy hardcore socially awkward nerd bob? Next time you would think of someone who likes anime, you are more likely to use bob as a representation for 'an anime fan' than joe because of memory's natural truncating effect. (sorry for my sucky explanation, my knowledge of psychology and all the official terms fades every year...)

You could take a strictly literal approach however; since 'normalcy' is defined by social majority, liking anime is in fact 'weird' because it does not fall under a category that 'most' (ie normal) people 'like'.

Well, I for one feel that if you are ashamed of your hobby (and one I just so happen to share) you should find a new one. One that you can impress your obviously superficial friends with, like rock-climbing or surfing. Though I have a slight bias since I don't think anyone ashamed of their hobby is worthy of sharing the same one as me. In my opinion you should be ashamed of yourself for letting your friends control your life.

If you wanted to psychoanalyze it -- people who are most often called geeks, weirdos, and loners experience some form of apprehension, nervousness, or anxiety around others. That's the basis of their anti-social behavior.

The link to anime?

Often, in such individuals, seeing a real person's face triggers various types of emotionally painful reactions.

I will let you in on a little phrase I use, there's no such thing as "normal" because everyone's different. I used video games and anime to escape the constant screeming fight between my mom and sister.
