totally agree. I know i am. I have a ton of friends and a two jobs and can be very social, but i will admit that my favorite time of the day is when i get time to myself to watch anime or game and when i dont have to deal with anyone. So I think that the majority are a lil weird and introverted. Most anime and gamers i know are the same way~

i'm pretty kinda weird but not a loner type... sometimes yeah... but it's my "me time" and it's nice to had some time alone every now and then..
but some people thinks that anime fan is loner it's because those watching it are having a hard time to find people with the same level of interest like of theirs appreciating animes.... or talking it personally... so the result is to find people with the same thing in the net that make an anime fan to be loner coz he or she is spending time alone chatting and watching more alone... (but technically not really alone)...

Anime is an artistic medium, just like comics, film, music, poetry, books, painting, sculpture, etc. I wouldn't say anyone is weird for being an anime lover or otaku, just like I wouldn't really hold it against someone for being a movie buff, art connoisseur, music lover, and so on.

Although you can probably find some similarities between a good portion of anime fans, you could say the same about fans of anything really. What is weird for you is normal for someone else.

I meet many different types of social groups; some don't prefer anime, others do.

Honestly, it really depends on who you hang out with. Hang out with the wrong crowd and you suddenly feel ashamed of doing something you normally enjoy. It's not a stupid notion you're bringing up here. It's actually interesting.

I personally enjoy anime but I tend to dislike extremists--as in people who:

-have a 'really' unhealthy appetite for anime (e.g. to the point its hurting relations with significant others)
-who can't differentiate fantasy from reality (e.g. like pretending to be some bad-ass lone-wolf anime character and giving weird-ass glares at random people across the street... I've seen it happen...)
-bite on other people's opinions because they like enforcing their own opinions on others

We can go on naming a lot of peevish things, but really... I believe it's best if you enjoy anime with people you can find who can share the same interests and don't bash at you for who you are.

It all comes down to different social groups. The people you hang out with shape those types of thoughts in your head.

bottom line. people don't know what they are missing :P
i love anime, and i think of it as a hobby but i don't consider myself a loner. I'm married with a kid, i have multiple friend which i party with "i live in miami" and i also have multiple friends that watch anime and are very social.

people that misjudge or thinks about that kind of stereotype are just ignorant.
anime is like any other think, like music for instance; some people like house, some other rock.. and some dont like either/or, etc...

I wouldn't say all anime fans are weird. I am an avid cosplayer and absolutely LOVE anime. I also love the culture and the fact I've met tons of cool anime fans at conventions. However, like with any group of fans there are the people some would perceive as "weird" or awkward. I think some people get along with those unique personalities better than others. Everyone's got quirks and some are just better at hiding it :p I used to cosplay at school on the days of conventions, but since I was in theatre most kids thought I was just "theatrical." They were wrong; I'm an absolute nerd when it comes to good anime/manga ^_^

Meh, i'm proud to be weird. Sure, i fit one or two of those definitions previously listed, but It's not like I used anime as a crutch to get through life with. I have a good group of friends, we go out drinking and we're into some really geeky stuff (RP for example) but it's just a normal part of our lives. I don't think singling out anime fans as weird can really be done though... it's just that anime fandom is sort of inline (and then veers off in many wild directions) with the rest of the general geek cultures you see around (star trek fans, comic book geeks and so on...)

The definition of weird is too vague aswell. I have absolutely no interest in sports whatsoever, so to me the people who are really into football etc... seem a bit weird since I personally can't see anything good in them. Everyone has different tastes and opinions, and everyone is just different in general.

Anime fans can be amazing though, and I love the odd occasion that I get to sit down and have a huge geeky anime chat with likeminded people or friends. It's a hobby i'm passionate about and have learned a lot about over the years. Same goes for my love of Jpop and gaming.

I've got to say... I'm a fan of anime, but I can't say I watch it constantly, like with most of my friends...
but I know people who are totally... crazy. I mean, anyone who lets something rule their lives seem to be shunned by society...
I guess too much passion isbad

I've never spent time around adult otakus but the ones in High School were so emotionally immature and awkward compared to the rest of the school, so I'm just going to assume yes.

This is ridiculous... since when does being a loner or geek makes you weird.

Do you think Einstein was weird?

You're weird if you... go into a cinema and shoot random innocent people or flying a plane into a building.

You're not weird if you're an individual who doesn't follow what the crowds like and don't like.

I'm not a hipster either, I think they're also ridiculous.

It's just a stereotype, I am a highschool senior and on the varsity football team as starting left guard, and I can't go 1 day without my anime(It seems like I go through withdrawl). Just cause you like it doesn't make you the weird loner who sits at home. Be proud of who and what you are there's no need to hide it, especially form your friends. Sorry if I sounded preachy.
