I personally like to think of myself as weird or at best quirky. A lot of the things i'm into are rather obscure or i just don't think many will understand them. My personal believe is that if if someone ask about my hobbies then let them know but otherwise i keep to myself. I seem to function just find as i manage to get myself into multiple groups of friends. I'm not popular by any stretch of the word but if i need a sit at the school cafeteria i can get into a group easily enough. Though i'm nowhere near the league of hardcore fanboyism some of the other anime fans i know of in my high school are. I remember one guy who wrote a Full Metal Alchemist fanfic during senior comp and when the teacher caught him and asked him what it was he went into a full description on what fanfics were and what his story was about. Everyone in class kinda single him out as a freak for a while.

I'm an anime nerd,
Who loves to cosplay.
I dress up to be heard,
Cause it makes my day.

I love anime so bad,
The haters make me sad.

For days I pray,
That cosplay will forever stay.

No they are not. Anime is a form of culture and entertainment. That means its no different from a normal TV show. I have a friend whos brother is a complete jack@$$. All he does is wanna be famous on youtube and game all day long saying anime is for hopeless nerds and geeks. Those are stereo types many people watch anime. Want to watch a VERY good anime: Kids on The slope. 5 star anime nothing less.

Anime fans are responsible for making the rest of the world prejudiced against anime. There are plenty, maybe even the majority, of anime fans who are normal people that just also watch and enjoy some anime, but the vocal, obnoxious, eccentric ones have gone out of their way to ensure that other people think all anime is stupid kids shows or for perverts.

So yes, anime fans are weird. My advice to anime fans is to quietly enjoy what they like and buy the series when they become available. Cosplaying and attending cons doesn't help out the studios, but buying their products will.

Also, stop saying things like "anime is great" or "I love anime." Anime is a medium used to tell a story, and they're all different. Saying those things makes as much sense as saying "movies are great" or "I love live-action." I like some anime but dislike most of them, same with movies and books and everything else out there. That's normal. If we want anime to become accepted by the majority we shouldn't group all anime together like that. Most anime is bad, we need to accept that fact and let other, non-anime fans make their own decisions about what they like and don't like.

YES ...i have been on this site to know. I thought that most were like me...just into anime, but what I've seen here is very very weird people or it maybe that the weird ones go onto forums and comment on vids more often than the normals.
Just look at some of the anime here...lots of loli like stuff here so I can imagine a lot of Pedos frequent this site...oh and masochist..lots and lots of them here.

There is a reason I don't go to conventions. I say anime fandom is split 50/50 with normal people who take anime as a hobby and people who's live revolve around it.

Who decides what's weird & what's normal? I mean, if you're going to conform to the "norm" and deny your true self & what you like, then your're the freak with self-esteem issues. It's same thing if you hide it. Maybe you're confusing weird with a strong sense of self-worth & confidence.

That is the real answer.

I find anime fans/Otakus rather fun, if you find the right ones. They may be weird or crazy, but in a fun way. It goes the same for any fandom really. But people think that the anime fanbase is just a bunch of guys in their basements surrounded by squeeze pillows and figurines. But the anime community is one of the most diverse out there. You got your newbies to anime like the narutard, Sorry that's really the only term i know. There are also the Yaoi fangirls, who in my opinion are the scariest out there. But most of all, the average Otaku, the fellow or gal who just likes anime because of their own specific reasons. Again, the anime fanbase is one of the most entertaining out there.
(plus you get to see hot chicks/dudes in cosplay at cons)
