I guess that makes me wierd then.

But in my opinion, i think that the people who think that I think i am not wierd are the ones who are wierd.

Anime has nothing to do with if you are weird or not.
You are the one in control, so you choose to be weird or not.

Not most, but there are a few super weird ones who give anime fans a bad rep. When I was in highschool there was a girl who would say things like "That Imoto was so ayo. What an inuyasha baka. I koied her kawaiiness though!". (Exact quote from something she one time said) No one would ever have any idea what she was talking about because she would always mix japanese words in with english words in everyday conversation.

people are people right? some people will always be socially inept and obsessive. Its just the way of things.
I personally think that the fact that anime is seen as "for kids" by so many people is what makes the community look so extreme.
Somehow people watch movies and tv shows like smallville or iron man and think "thats totally adult oriented and masterful storytelling" but call any seemingly normal person out as weird for enjoying anime. so we tend not to advertise that we watch anime .

the problem is, why hide something that you enjoy.

If people want to be like everyone else then let them, if people want to be different then let them.

Life Lesson - People's opinion's do not matter and it shouldn't dictate what you can and cannot do (apart from if your at work, then your bosses opinion matters)

I believe it's a matter of how you handle yourself when surrounded by others.
You could be considered "weird" if you don't talk as much as others and you could be considered "weird" if you talk too much.

You just have to know how to interact with those around you, I suppose.
Finding people with similar interests is pretty much the best solution, haha.

I think it depends on just the kind of person you are. I categorize myself as different, but in no means weird. I'm social and get along with pretty much everyone. I think that's just because I don't judge others. Although, I have to admit I am a "nerd". I have extremely good grades but hate to show off. People don't "brand me the title", they just say "you're lucky to be intelligent." I brush it off, then everything's good.

I have to say, many of the people I do know are completely the utmost weird you can get. Some don't come out of their room, others are just perverts. I think it's a matter of balancing your interests, honestly. Sort of like I do; I have lots of different hobbies. Everyone around me knows I love animes/mangas and know I'm utterly obsessed with them. I walk around school with many accessories such as t-shirts, bags, jewelry, etc.. I think it's just that I don't talk about it to those who aren't interested. Then people don't consider me "one of those losers who can't socialize and are desperate."

It's sad to say, I believe a large majority of those who seem to like manga have nothing going for them. There are some exceptions, like my best friend, who I've managed to make her into a social butterfly now. I guess it's just how some people are. I think people should be who they are, and no one should judge them. The decisions they make and if they purposely make themselves weird is their problem, not ours.

Precisely!

Plus, nobody ever told that being "weird" is a bad thing. Everything depends on your actions, that's all. I mean, most of successful people are weird. But we never consider even for a second to critisize them, because what they do is awesome.

People who enjoy anime are generally those who posess a strong imagination. And this is a great potential to achieve things that "normal" guys/girls will never even think about.

I, myself, was constantly laughed at because I enjoy anime - which is not a popular thing to do while you are in the army. Who cares? My achievements are no less important. And I do not feel "less" a soldier than anybody of my friends out there.

I think the majority of anime fans aren't necessarily weird, its just that the weird ones garner the most attention is all. . .

first off, who said that being antisocial automatically makes you weird? what.
also, who said that preferring fantasy over reality is weird? what.

you cant generalize an entire group of people.

just because you watch anime doesnt mean you are antisocial/a loner.
just because you watch anime doesnt mean you run around screaming about how sexy that one character is in your latest favorite anime.
just because you watch anime doesnt mean you a certain person.

you can be antisocial, very social, kinda social--you can be ANYONE EVER, with whatever combination of personality traits you have--and still like anime. i dont see why watching anime makes you "weird" or a "loner."

dont generalize all anime watchers/otakus just because the otakus you know are *insert adjectives here.* you havent met every otaku ever, have you? so dont generalize them.

While I agree entirely with the responses I've read above, about how weird is relative, who cares what people categorize you as, and that there are many many "normal" anime watchers, I'd like to give my two cents on this topic.

In my experience anime tends to be more sensational than western entertainment. Perhaps all of Japanese culture is a bit as well. But while characters in western shows tend to be smart, witty, sarcastic etc. anime characters are often loud, kinda stupid (... naruto :P), and fanatics to their ideals. When was the last time you saw a character like Lelouch or Light Yagami in western shows? I feel like because in the west we often focus more on pragmatism, getting things done makes you cool, while in anime there is more of a trend to focus on ideals, dying for your beliefs for instance is seen in a more positive light. So weird people in the west are often people who are more focused on ideals than on pragmatism, and I feel like that's part of what makes anime attractive to them. So while I'm not speaking for everyone here, I do see this as part of why anime and it's fans come across as weird sometimes
