I know a decent number of people who watch anime. There is anything from people living with their parents still, to military serviceman with families to grandparents. I suppose it has a certain stigma to it because people see it as "kiddy cartoons". These people don't take the time to enjoy a great story simply because it is animated. Whether animated or not, I appreciate a great story brought to life that gets you interested in the characters and their plights as well as the complications of the world they live in.

As a character mentioned by paddlefish in the series Code Geass, I've seen people get into anime because they enjoyed the story and how it made them think. The different Gundam series also does the same. Making people think about the future and also about political intrigue and other things such as discrimination, war, and hate.

I do note that some people are just withdrawn from being social altogether. If it wasn't anime, it could just as easily be something else. But it also is seen as an opportunity to be used to make friends as you have a common bond to share.

While I agree entirely with the responses I've read above, about how weird is relative, who cares what people categorize you as, and that there are many many "normal" anime watchers, I'd like to give my two cents on this topic.

In my experience anime tends to be more sensational than western entertainment. Perhaps all of Japanese culture is a bit as well. But while characters in western shows tend to be smart, witty, sarcastic etc. anime characters are often loud, kinda stupid (... naruto :P), and fanatics to their ideals. When was the last time you saw a character like Lelouch or Light Yagami in western shows? I feel like because in the west we often focus more on pragmatism, getting things done makes you cool, while in anime there is more of a trend to focus on ideals, dying for your beliefs for instance is seen in a more positive light. So weird people in the west are often people who are more focused on ideals than on pragmatism, and I feel like that's part of what makes anime attractive to them. So while I'm not speaking for everyone here, I do see this as part of why anime and it's fans come across as weird sometimes

Yes, explained exactly what I wanted say with me have to say it.

From personal experience, I still say anime fans are weird, in general.

Well, I'm weird, but I can't speak for the entire anime watching community. Then again my concept of weird is probably different than yours. I haven't really met any other otaku, or what ever you'd like to call us, who I would classify as weird, however. I have met some D&D players that I would consider odd, however.

A weaboo is that person who tries to act Japanese, when they are clearly not. They use Japanese phrases, with out a clear knowledge or understanding of what it means, and typically will make an ass out of themselves. here's a good example; http://www.hulu.com/watch/289406

after watching that, you should have a basic understanding of what a weaboo is.

I scored "Otaku" on the "What anime stereotype are you" quiz.

I answered completely honestly, so in one word "yes" they are weird - and I'm one of them.
