Nope, I have quite a few friends at high school who watch Anime, and they aren't geeks with no lives. Heck, even the jock at my school likes Anime. But I do agree that there are some Anime fans that take it obsessively, like the kind of people who would marry their Dakimakura Anime love pillows. (This has actually happened btw. Check out the Korean show Martian Virus for instance) Oh, and watch out for the non Japanese Otakus, the Weaboos. I can see why this type of ghetto would exist, but I don't agree with the notion that every person that enjoys Anime are unwashed creeps. People like me just enjoy it like they would with a live action TV series, or a movie.

As an anti-social loner geek (although my anime obsession has recently been hurting my GPA, it is down to a 3.45, although some still tell me that is pretty good for a CS major) who pours 4-5 hours daily into Anime/VNs/Light novels, I guess I am evidence of how weird anime fans can be. I can tell you, however, that most of the members of the Anime club (http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~anime/) are quite normal. We even have a few of those jock types in there. Anime is great for anyone, but being somewhat intellectual helps you to enjoy it more.

all my friends hate anime because they think only geeks with no lives watch it.whyi seceretly watch it ocassionally because i dont want them to know i like it.though what they say is kinda of true all the people we know who like it are loners or weird people who are in some fantasy world.is this stereotype true because ive seen like 20 people in high school and all in college and there all weird or loners and geeks.sometimes i am sad to like anime iknow all anime watchers are that as the stereotype but most are.i only like anime because when i was young i watched dbz and i really enjoyed and i just stucked with anime.

im not saying anime is weird but some of the people who watch it there antisocial or have a hard time fitting in

how many people did you personally know that watched anime
everyone's weird in their own way man.
I watched cause i watched db, and dbz, and inuyasha when i was younger too, but now i like all kinds of anime.
i'm a bit introvert but otherwise im pretty normal and get along with most people well

This thread makes me so angry. Anime is just a genre. In some countries, it's super normal to watch. Some people get really into it. Some don't. Some of the people that get really into it are introverted; some are extroverted. Basically all of them are nice people worthy of being friends. They don't need your judgment. They like what they like and aren't going to hide it. That's braver than the general public.

Honestly, in my experience, people that are honest about themselves and passionate about what they like make the best friends. I'd much rather have a supposedly weird otaku friend than someone whose goal is to impress. Friends aren't status symbols.

kobebryant123, if you don't think your friends can understand this, they probably aren't your friends anyway. Also, if you can't understand this, you might as well give up on "geeky" hobbies and lift weights or whatever it is that impresses other guys.

Personally, I'm new to anime. I just started watching it this year, but I'm hooked! I'm weird and always have been. But I have a certain pride in that. I'm me, and I don't ever want to change to impress people. What I do want to be, though, is accepting of everyone.

For someone who claims to enjoy anime, you sure spend a lot of time putting down people who watch it. If you find other viewers so unappealing then you should probably stop watching these shows. It pisses me off that you will enjoy these programs while simultaneously insulting every other viewer with a barrage of negative connotations.

I guess I'm kinda a loner. That's only when I want to be though. like in school I know a majority of the people and prefer not to talk to them or they're people i cant easily talk with :\ although when I'm out in public I tend to be more social, especially when i know the person next to me has the same interests. Yeah, I like to go into my own fantasy world a lot especially on long car rides. I'm not fat though and in fact I'm taking Kendo and I'm actually pretty good at it. (yep anime got me into that) I try to maintain a good body weight because, well I'm a cosplayer. (being fat and cosplaying doesn't work -.-) I do love the Japanese culture (like most anime fans) I'm looking into Japans history and hope to take Japanese classes soon! (I find Japans history very interesting and would like to visit it some day) All my friends know I love anime and some even watch it them selves! most of my friends are guys though and it seems like more guys like anime. my school even has a anime club that i attend. sorry, that was kinda long.....

Like anime and it is indeed a favorite hobby of mine. Has a good job with good pay... awesome car, and is looking for an apartment to live in.
Weird... maybe, but have a good life! XD

All fandoms have people who most would qualify as weird.

Just today I saw an article where a person talked about a group of fans of the tv show "Supernatural" that were sending death threats to the actors and their wives, as well as started a petition to have the next season how they wanted it because the writers had "betrayed them"

Most people would consider that behavior as addictive and weird

I'm as weird as can be. I fit the stereotype almost perfectly. Fat, room full of anime merchandise, don't forget the pillows, no friends, and live in my mothers garage. Lmao!
Besides the living off my mother part, there's nothing wrong with me...because I'm happy.
I just wish I knew more people like me near me.

The funny thing is, when I was 14 I remember making fun of people like me today. I used to be such an idiot following other people and pretending to be someone I wasn't. Eventually I noticed how respectful people like that where for sticking to things they truly loved. I slowly started to "not give a fuck" what people though.

What's weird? and what's normal?

...and why do you care so much about what others think of you? unless you're applying for a good job, it does matter what the interviewer thinks about you, you know...it's your future in his/her hands. But regular people? really??

With that out of the way... I don't give a flip if people on the internet/real life don't like anime. Heck, I don't care if my IRL friends don't like it. I have good enough taste in friends that none of mine would be rude to my face about it, and I don't insist that my friends like everything I like, so it's a non-issue. I hang out with people who either like, or at least respect my choices of 'weird' hobbies. It's a waste of my energy to try to make friends with tunnel-vision Muggles who can't wrap their pointy little heads around anything they didn't see on MTV.

:D i started watching anime years ago ... started with speed racer when i was little and a couple of other old school animes ... however, life happened and i got out of the habit ... then my kids got into watching anime and they became super fans ... my boyfriend and i got super hooked on anime about a year ago when we started borrowing movies and seasons of anime from my daughter ... we are all about the anime ... none of us are introverts on a regular basis ... when my daughter was getting her b.a. she wrote a lot of papers on anime ... it was hilarious to see the professors comments ... while in my masters program i watched anime on and off when i had time off from studies ... i just happen to be a cartoon fanatic too ... so watching animes is just part of the process for me
as far as having friends who watch anime ... we have some who do and some who don't ... no one thinks we are weird ... everyone has something they are hooked into viewing ... some watch anime, some watch supernatural(as the above message stated), and some watch housewives or sports ... it is what it is ... no reason to be haters

I know what you mean! What is normal?
Everything is strange and weird but that's good.
